Full-time decker routes?

Post by lunchbox »

If there exists a list of Sydney weekday routes which ALWAYS use a decker, I'd much appreciate a link to it.

All double decker buses have to be no more than 4.3 m high so they can go on any street that has no low branches, low bridges or weight restriction signs.

I think Parramatta road would be ideal as well as the northern beaches route if bus stops are involved but if interststate it would depend on transfer points.

To my knowledge it's just the B1 (and by extension, BN1).

I know the T80, the m9_, 611 and some of the 6__X routes tend to use a lot of deckers during the week, but for all of them it certainly isn't always, or even a majority of services. Sydney just doesn't have that many deckers.

Do overhead structures in Sydney have minimum 4.5 m clearance? I know they do in Singapore. Deckers have been part of our landscape over there since time immemorial.

As far as I am aware, the only full-time decker route in Sydney is B1 & corresponding BN1.

Other routes that commonly use deckers, but not always...are:
611
607X
610X
M92
T80

On occasion deckers can be seen on:
141
270
271

Please note the above is from in person observations or from apps.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong or if other routes feature deckers.

Buses were allowed 4.4 height, trucks are 4.3
There are a few railway bridges around Sydney that have less than 4.4 metre clearance. Burwood was a well known "trap" on a bus route; some routes needed "lowbridge" deckers in days past.

Yes mate I was only referring to general access routes.

Route 750 from what I can remember used to be serviced by Busways' single CDi decker when it was first brought into service - but other than that I am not sure whether it was used on any of the T-way runs in region 1... definitely not full-time decker routes in that regard!

It's not entirely deckers though, I frequently see 14.5m buses on it

Sometime last year, I saw one of Forest's MAN-Gemilang deckers on the 197. I've also seen Bustech CDi vehicles on the 810X before. Bustech CDi run quite often on the 665 on weekdays.

Re the B1 - it is quite rare but I've seen a couple of occasions (most recently last week, AM peak) where an articulated bus (was one of the B12BLEA CB60 buses) operated an inbound B1 route instead of the double decker bus.
Though that's definitely more exception than rule I would say given how infrequently that happens.

^ that destination originated from the time that Pittwater Rd at Brookvale was closed for the pedestrian bridge to be installed, B1 services were replaced by artic buses and diverted through Warringah Mall.

I've seen the artics display "B1 Replacement Bus"
So an outbound B1 I saw this evening leaving Wynyard was operated by one of the B12BLEA Volgren articulated buses (the ones North Sydney have), and in this case it showed the route B1 with the wording as

DEE WHY
B-LINE REPLACEMENT

It would only be as a standby situation.

Given the Saturday I spotted that bus was the last night of Vivid Sydney, probably would be safe to assume it was on standby, and moreso since it was only running to Dee Why.

On that I only recalled it now but do recall seeing a then-relatively-new yellow double decker bus on New Year's Day (as in early morning, just past midnight) showing route 151 heading onto Military Road outbound (the first year the B1 was introduced).
Odd at the time as I couldn't picture a decker on 151, but given it was New Year's anything would be possible (and probably needed too).
