Last diesel rigid bus delivered

Post by Lt. Commander Data »

Scania says it and the South Australian government’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport are playing a leading role in transitioning to cleaner and greener public buses.

In September, DIT took delivery of its final diesel-powered rigid bus from Scania. From now on, all deliveries by Scania to DIT for rigid route bus application will be electric-hybrid or full electric powertrains.

"By mid-October this year we will have 24 (Generation One) electric-hybrid buses in service with the DIT public transport system, the first of which has been in service for close to two years," says government bus contracts manager for Scania in SA Steven Godbold.

"Now we are preparing for the introduction of our New Bus Generation electric-hybrid, which has almost double the zero emissions range on electric power over the first generation.

"The first of these new buses should join the fleet in November 2022. We are looking forward to ramping up electric-hybrid deliveries into 2023 and onwards. We aim to deliver 51 electric-hybrid buses to DIT during 2023 and around 45 in 2024."

Godbold says Scania is also inbuild with its first full battery electric bus for DIT which is slated to enter an evaluation programme before the end of 2022.

"Introducing the BEV bus to real-world route work in the height of summer will show how easily these vehicles can handle the local climate and working environment," Godbold says.

"DIT and Scania have long been committed to driving the shift towards a sustainable transport solution for route buses in South Australia. Even though diesel-powered buses supplied by Scania since 2015 have been compliant with Euro 6 emissions standards – a level far above any mandated in Australia – all future deliveries will be far cleaner at the tailpipe, if they even have a tailpipe at all."

Scania says its electric-hybrid bus powertrain reduces fuel burn and tailpipe emissions by around 15 percent and allows silent mode running on approach to and departure from bus stops, providing benefits to pedestrians and patrons by reducing noise and exhaust output at the kerbside.

"When the fully electric buses enter service, they will be almost silent in operation 100 per cent of the time and there will be no tailpipe emissions at all," Godbold says.

"And with SA forging ahead with electricity produced from renewables, recharging the buses will also be green and free from carbon emissions."

SA minister for infrastructure and transport Tom Koutsantonis says: "We are proud to be moving to a cleaner, greener public transport fleet, culminating in the scheduled delivery of our first full battery, zero-emission electric bus in December."

"The state government received the final diesel, rigid bus delivery from Scania in September, and the upcoming delivery of our first fully electric bus is another exciting step in zero-emissions public transport.

"We are already operating hybrid electric buses on the Adelaide Metro public transport network. From November 2022, we will add new generation hybrid-electric buses with a significantly increased zero emissions range. This technology is a win for commuters and the environment."

Going by this, I believe Scania Bustech #5025 will be the last diesel rigid ever for Adelaide, with 5006 being the only diesel NGB diesel Scania.

Notably the word “rigid” is included very purposefully, allowing the Bustech artics not to break this little media attention grab. Hopefully the NGB hybrids will be more fit-for-purpose than the first gen ones.

I wonder what sort of media firestorm awaits any expansion to that order?

Elsewhere, fuel cell buses are going through trials, even bio-ethanol (supposedly Scanias in QLD - despite the conjecture of only zero-emissions vehicles post-2025...). I wonder if Adelaide will jump on either bandwagon?

The Bustech artics have gone missing...their body is dated to last year and Bustech said they would deliver the artics in mid-2022 if I'm not mistaken.

There was one parked at Scania last week maybe about to get tested on the track again after some modifications

If these artics still cant do the O-Bahn then surely they could go into usual service and perhaps a couple of the 117x/118x artics could do it instead?

That's exactly what I was thinking Mile End have 1184 to 1189 which can be used as track buses then the BCI artics could do silver work out of Mile End until problems resolved

1184-1186 were delivered with beacon lights and possibly Codha systems for the O-Bahn tunnel (certainly they have the appropriate cutouts in the dash for these) but were exchanged for 806-808, there may be some reason that 1184-1186 weren't used on the O-Bahn.

1183 was the last Scania delivered to Adelaide with the older style Scania front axle. At the time, there was no guide arm that fit the new axle on 1184 onwards. However now 5701 and the first two Bustech artics have guidewheels and the new front axle, so there theoretically should be no reason 1184-6 can't be guideway equipped.
Regards,
Mr Nicoster.

Let's go back further and not run risks and run Leylands and AEC's!
