[July-Sep 2022] SA transport observations

Post by The Phonj »

Half of the year has gone past; and the new financial year is upon us... July is here! Don't forget to do your tax return; hope you get a nice refund!

In a break to many years of tradition, fares increased on Friday 1 July. Previously they generally rose on the first Sunday in the financial year. Another quirk of this increase is that some singletrip prices now have 5c pricing - eg the interpeak concession singletrip ticket is now $1.45 (was $1.40). I guess no longer selling onboard buses has allowed them to make these changes. For details visit the Adelaide Metro website.

Train substitute services have finally been completed on the Gawler Central line, with trains resuming on Sunday 12 June 2022. A mix of 3000 and 4000 class trains are running on the line to Gawler Central. Ovingham station remains closed, a shuttle bus from Ovingham to Dudley Park is being operated by Torrens Transit, utilising a Sealink Toyota Coaster. Signage at Ovingham Stations expects the station to be opened from "late 2022"

In conjunction with the conclusion of rail subs, all the remaining 'R' series NL202 buses have been retired, leaving only about a dozen in service, and the low floor buses that were running for Kanga/K-Rail have been moved on to new operators - largely interstate.

The (normally) annual Royal Adelaide Show is to be held from September 3 to September 11. It had been cancelled the last couple of years due to COVID. I would expect that the typical additional services (21W, etc) will run. Visit the Adelaide Metro website for timetable information closer to the event.

Please post your South Australian transport observations that wouldn't seem to warrant their own thread here.

Poor decision to divert the Kensington Road services via Botanic Road Especiallu in peak hour. They get stuck in traffic. They should of diverted via East Terrace and Bartels Road or be allowed to do hook turn at Botanic/Dequetteville intersection.
Next station is Victoria Square. Change here for all trains.

Old news I know but the circular bus stop request bells are very dodgy. On an artic route 864f outbound on Friday I gave two hard presses after pulling away from stop 13. I got my day pack on and unable to see anything on the little screen, pressed another button just to confirm as we approached the Tollgate stop 14. Sadly, the driver had to brake with a little force to pull up at the stop. Next stop after that one is a fair way away and quite a walk back.
That's the way the whole thing started, silly but it's true ...

viewtopic.php?t=92454 this thread further down talks about how those old CB80 buttons work. I usually push in and then push in again harder to get them to work.

Pretty much everyone has a smartphone nowadays, just an idea but maybe there should be an option in an Adelaide Metro App whereby you could request your bus stop.

And another could be at a bus stop whereby multiple routes stop at , there could be button on the touch screen bus stops where you could request what bus route you want to catch, then driver gets alerted.

… or, people could just hail the bus and press the next stop request button. Why over complicate things?

Seeing as buses are already full of over-engineered "improvements" nobody asked for, what's just one more addition going to do?

Have an app so you can just show the driver your excuse for metroCARD non-validation with ease.

...or the contractors could train their Bus Operators what Compulsory Stop actually means.

In my experience (albeit not Adelaide) it is made abundantly clear to operators what compulsory stops are. Whether drivers observe them or not is another matter.

Yes, primarily stops in the CBD that are Compulsory Stops that are ignored by Bus Operators unless hailed or the bell rung. Stop W1 in Currie Street used to be one of the worst for it.

Seeing the footage on the Channel 7 news site, hopefully it wasn't too badly damaged.

Doesn't look pretty, curb side damage. Nor Southlink or State Government will be impressed

Latest electric train set 4026 is now in service. Recently sighted on the Gawler Central line. Don’t know if they have started to retire any of the 3000 Diesels yet

Seem to recall hearing that the most-recently electrified line did not get a new timetable upon opening. Is there a chance additional rolling stock is required to facilitate a future improvement?

That’s correct from I have heard that the Gawler Central timetable won’t be changed/updated until we receive the rest of the electric trains. I can’t recall how many sets we are due to get sorry - someone on here will probably know.

Yeah, new timetable will wait on the rest of the Alstom class 4000s and Ovingham station being complete I believe.

Considering they were all re-engined in 2018, I'd hope SAPTA will introduce a better timetable for Outer Harbour and maybe Belair trains instead of just retire the spares.
