Snowy 2
Snowy 2
Went down the snowy hydro immersive theatre at Cooma and was very impressed especially with the cost of power every 5 minutes also the specially designed triple trucks for the 9 segments. https://www.snowyhydro.com.au/wp-conten ... t-2020.pdf
PS
With all the rain we have had recently and with the batteries flat the Snowy would still be giving free energy for years after the initial expenditure.

Re: Snowy 2
The snow fields are a treasure chest for NSW. I noticed when studying an atlas that the state line bends sharply down! Slightly suspicious. Parts of Victoria are a further north latitude!
NSW, the state that embraces mediocrity.
Re: Snowy 2
Went down and had another look at the Hydro centre and learnt more this time.
South Australia sells power a lot cheaper than NSW to them and that is because the guy said they have a contract to buy all their surplus to encourage investment in green energy and I also think it is due to the wind there.
The multi model TBM 3 is fantastic with all the bells and whistles and can drive up to 10 kilometres in one year https://www.snowyhydro.com.au/wp-conten ... MAY-21.pdf

While there are are critics when I visited, they were only paying from SA $12 per mw while NSW was $240 per mw so it has to be a goer and the first snowy guys were sleeping in the snow in tents on straw with many killed but things are different now.
Perhaps the power can be transmitted with high voltage DC in the tunnel which will connect Sydney to Melbourne while driving a DC motor which can provide variable frequency to the maglev train.

Watching the power prices on TV and thinking how good in 2026 when Snowy 2 can provide power at a fraction of the cost.

This is an interesting page on demand V generation but I cannot understand Tasmania https://aemo.com.au/en/energy-systems/e ... hboard-nem
The existing Bass link (DC 15 CM) can only take 500 MW but the new one will take an extra 1,500 MW

As the power goes from $300 MW to $20 MW would it be worth putting smaller elements in our hot water tanks to eliminate the expensive peak times.

Many times I have looked at the dispatch overview https://aemo.com.au/en/energy-systems/e ... hboard-nem and it generally is below $100 per MW so I do not see much increase in future power bills particularly when Putin and the comedian stop fighting.
Just looked at Tasmania and it was $8,800 per MW ??? 14/11/22

Today the sun did not shine and the wind did not blow hence the tripling per MW from the generators. https://aemo.com.au/en/energy-systems/e ... hboard-nem

Re: Snowy 2
On Friday I checked out the Snowy 2 display at Cooma and was very interested in the model of TBM Florence and noticed it had provision for predrive grouting which is 90% more effective than post drive but as it has been stuck until recently maybe there was too much pressure to advance or maybe they are just learning.

Re: Snowy 2
I am quite impressed with Snowy 2 even though people want to bag it and most of the hold up is due to greenies in my opinion and as I have seen a model of the TBM it has provision for predrive grouting and I think they were in too much of a hurry to use it.
The latest video I could find was December 2022 but I am sure they will get up to speed once they get the hang.

Re: Snowy 2
According to this https://www.newcivilengineer.com/latest ... 4-02-2023/ they are just predrive grouting so Florence does not get stuck so better to be sure than sorry.
Generally they start off slow till the operator gets the hang but I think they felt pressure because they were so far behind with all the green opposition to everything.

Despite the fact that some people want to trash Snowy 2, I find it to be rather impressive. In my opinion, greenies are the main cause of the delays, and I have seen a model of the TBM that has a predrive grouting option, but I believe they were in a rush to utilise it.
Re: Snowy 2
Exactly, sometimes people do not understand it was the people objecting to everything that made it so late with the operators trying to get distance when it was obvious they should have secured the ground before rushing in.Robinh12 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 1:21 am Despite the fact that some people want to trash Snowy 2, I find it to be rather impressive. Latest Snowy 2 update https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXovDgyULQg&t=2s and I saw 12 empty segment trucks heading east.

Re: Snowy 2
Swift,
Sorry, running late!
The border between New South Wales and Victoria was greatly discussed in the 1840s and 1850s.
It was eventually decided to use the Murray River as the dividing line up to the point in the Mountains where the Murray starts and then use a straight line to the coast. They settled on Cape Howe.
This is of course not a horizontal line but roughly 45 deg when viewed on a map.
If a straight line had been drawn east to the coastline then the border would be somewhere around Merimbula (I think that fishing may have had some influence in the decision).
Interestingly there was discussion about having the state border by using the Murrumbidgee River as the border (imagine all the broad gauge!).
Using rivers as borders is also why part of the New South Wales - Queensland border has it shape. The border follows the Dumaresq River for part of its length.
Re: Snowy 2
If the border had been drawn in a straight line from the most northerly point near Mildura, the NSW/ Vic border would reach the coast in the vicinity of Wolloongong.

Re: Snowy 2
Although the ground is soft at Snowy 2 as a layman with a great interest in TBM I cannot understand why they went like a bull at a gate rather than probing ahead and stabilizing it before they tried driving it.
Was the TBM pilot inexperienced because from what I have seen and read it was capable of probing ahead and grouting where needed and they generally start slow anyway until they get the hang.
It makes Parrahub to Melbourne via Canberra and Albury look impossible to drive in two years even though it is easy hard rock.

Re: Snowy 2
Surface drilling in hardrock to know what sort of TBM to build is the old way but new TBM like they have at Snowy 2 have the ability to probe ahead and predrive grout where needed but you just have to know what you are doing.
I remember they drilled from the surface to build Tower colliery and missed the big fault that stopped development to half the mine for ten years.
Even if it costs 6 times the estimate it still is better than the Sydney Opera house that cost 14 times the estimate.
Regarding the opposition to power poles I am sure it can provide power to the Sydney/Melbourne Japanese SC maglev.

On the construction of the Sydney Opera House I've heard building materials would arrive at the job site and be taken away again (stolen).
Sydney has always been filled with crooks.

Maybe not, but it certainly had it's share. It's not exempt by a long shot.
