I was referring to the girls on video who said they were not sure whether to go immersed tunnel or drive below the harbour.

As I am a tunnel freak I wanted to know which direction they would drive the slurry TBM and I received this nice email back from Steph.

The Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be assembled in an underground launch cavern that will be excavated underground in Birchgrove. No additional dive or launch sites are required for the TBMs. Each piece of the machine will be transported on a truck to the Western Harbour Tunnel entry, which is already excavated as part of the Rozelle Interchange, and driven to the underground launch cavern.

TBM machines can only move in one direction. Our specialised TBM machines will tunnel for about 1.5km under from Birchgrove to Waverton including under the Sydney Harbour seabed, connecting the northern and southern ends of the project. Once we have completed tunnelling the TBM section of the project, the TBMs will be driven into a ‘receiving chamber’. We will salvage as much of the machine as possible, removing it in pieces back through the entrance to the tunnel at Rozelle.

Any excavated material from the tunnel is mixed with slurry and transported to a Slurry Treatment Plant where it is then prepared for recycling or disposal. It is currently proposed that the Slurry Treatment Plant will be located in the underground ventilation cavern.

After re reading what Steph wrote I realised she meant two TBM not the one used twice.
A lesson to me to read things properly.

The new NSW government says it will not do the western harbour tunnel but that was what they said after the change to Nick Greiner about the original tunnel who said he would stop it but then claimed it was too expensive not to do it so as it is half way there I think it will be done.

The new Minns' Labor government has not said it will cancel the Western Harbour Tunnel, as work is already underway. What they did say is that they won't proceed with the Northern Beaches Tunnel. The former LNP government had also deferred the construction of the Northern Beaches Tunnel.

Hopefully he'll slow down the destruction of Sydney although his federal counterpart will ruin that with his plan to turn back on the immigration tap. Adios Australian way of life.

Watch last night’s virtual information session – consultation closing soon on the Western Harbour Tunnel Modification Report

The Western Harbour Tunnel Modification Report is on public exhibition until 11.59pm on Tuesday 15 August 2023.

I laughed when he said Asia @ 29 minutes when it probably is China.
