NSW Railway Observations 2021
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Must be absolutely galling to a bunch of people just struggling through the pandemic on partial wages and just starting to return to full time work.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Tangara bites the dirt at Kembla Grange - hit an unoccupied vehicle left on the track. (Photos from Illawarra mercury)
Accident occurred about 0400. Driver and 11 passengers rescued. Driver and two passengers taken to hospital.

I assume the Tangara might have been a G set? I thought Tangaras don't operate on intercity network anymore.

No it isn’t a former G Set.

Some T Sets/ex G Sets still run on the South Coast Line, between Waterfall and Port Kembla, afaik.marcnut1996 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 9:07 am I assume the Tangara might have been a G set? I thought Tangaras don't operate on intercity network anymore.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
T sets (both original and converted Gs) operate a few inbound morning and outbound afternoon peak services from Bondi Junction as well as Waterfall - Port Kembla all stops services. Didn't think they went any further south, but evidently they do. Could have been a one-off as part of a stock reshuffle to do with today's strike.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Since T, K and V Sets are the only electric trains running today, that would be a yes.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Just Tangaras on the South Coast today (with one trapped south of the accident). Is that because they're not among the banned trains? The three daily Manildra trains have a big issue until they clear the line.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Correct, the union is only allowing trains to run today that are maintained at government depots, that includes T,V, and K sets but not anything newer. Newer trains (M,H,A,B) are maintained by outsourced private companies, which is the point of contention here.

Manildra? I thought that was out west near Orange.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Manildra is the company that operates the starch plant at Bomaderry, probably the only reason the line south of Kiama wasn’t closed in the 90s.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
That and Bomaderry are where the trains go between. There's an extraordinary similarity of appearance of the two town centres and adjacent industrial area too. It must be the company's DNA stamped on them.

A harder worked individual should absolutely get more than someone who does less. The problem is, say with buses, some duties are inherently busier and more stressful, but of course nobody wants a patronage-based penalty. So there's a need to balance things.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
In respect to the accident at Kembla Grange, Wednesday, October 20, from the Midday ABC News Bulletin, the 2nd Car in the consist is Car 5212.
Car 5212 was in set T42.
Travelling north the Consist for set T42 should be: 6212 (on its side), 5212, 5211, 6211.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
The trains may be out for days between Wollongong and Albion Park Rail.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Given that the location is easily accessible, the site will probably be cleared by tomorrow. Aside from a couple of stanchions and associated wiring, appears to be little other infrastructure damage. So could probably be opened for low speed diesel haulage by Saturday and for all trains by Monday.

More taxpayer-funded smoke and mirrors. Trains will still be powered by predominantly coal and gas, supported to a smaller and variable extent by hydro, solar and wind.boronia wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 6:52 am Sydney rail network goes green with renewable energy deal

It's a rather confusing news item. Is the Federal Government funding 12 buses and power supply upgrades for Leichhardt depot?
The racket of funding purchases of electric cars by the rich from taxes paid by everybody, including the poorer who can't afford them, continues I see. Nobody seems to have followed up on the issue that car manufacturers raise prices in line with these incentives, so the money effectively goes to the profits of an overseas manufacturer, not the consumer buying the car.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Oscars are back on the south coast, but no trains at all south of Wollongong, except that trip planner suggests an Endeavour trapped south of Kiama is running, but it doesn't show in Anytrip. Buses north of Kiama seem to be normal route buses via Shellharbour Square.

NSW Police Force (FB page)
A man will appear in court tomorrow, charged following investigations into the circumstances of a train crash in the Illawarra, which left four people injured last week.
About 4.05am Wednesday 20 October 2021, emergency services attended the train line on West Dapto Road at Kembla Grange, after reports of a train and vehicle crash.
Police were told the four-carriage train struck an unoccupied van, which had been abandoned on the track, before the front carriage of the train rolled onto its side.
The 13 occupants of the train were extracted, with four people taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
During the examination of the scene, police located a go kart on a trolley in the rail corridor and a large hole in the security fence between the rail corridor and the raceway.
Inquiries revealed that the van had been stolen earlier that morning from a home at Flinders.
Following extensive inquiries, Lake Illawarra detectives arrested a 47-year-old man at Duley Street, Dapto, about 1.30pm today (Wednesday 27 October 2021).
He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, two counts of destroy or damage property, larceny, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, endanger safety of person on railway, cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock, enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse, and breach bail.
The Berkeley man has been refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 28 October 2021).

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
As of today, rail replacement buses can now be real time tracked on the Hunter Line while it doesn't seem to show up on Anytrip as of yet, I have had some success with real time replacement bus tracking using Tripview on IOS. Also you now have to tap on and off on rail replacement buses on the Hunter Line, this morning I rode both a Hunter Valley Bus and a Port Stephens Coaches bus operating on the Hunter Line, The Hunter Valley bus had it's opal machine on while the Port Stephens Coaches machine was off and the driver wasn't interested in collecting fares.
At this stage, given various charter & hire only operators operate CCN rail replacements, there is no requirement to tap on / off due to the lack of Opal equipment on those buses.
Hunter Valley Buses seems to now also be showing the Rail Replacement route on their Electronic Destination Displays, this mornings example was an Optimus showing both "Train Replacement and 1HU Telarah for example".

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Sydney Trains contracted STA train replacement buses have had Opal enabled and been trackable for the last 2 years or so. The Hunter Line is the first trial of it for a private operator. Very limited subcontracting is needed by HVB, so I believe it makes for a good test case.ScaniaGrenda wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 4:41 pm As of today, rail replacement buses can now be real time tracked on the Hunter Line while it doesn't seem to show up on Anytrip as of yet, I have had some success with real time replacement bus tracking using Tripview on IOS. Does/will that also apply to the operators taking over from the STA?Gusbus wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 7:38 pm
