State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
Hi guys, I am wondering when the State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Oranas are going to be retired as i have noticed that most are close to 25 years. Also I would like to know what will be replacing the 14.5M Scania's as i think that there will be capacity issues if the 12.5M buses replace the 14.5M buses.

While a few 14.5's have been withdrawn they aren't really planning to phase them out just yet. They need at least 50 new high capacity buses to properly replace them whenever if its a Bendy or Double Decker or at least a new set of 14.5 vehicles.

Thanks guys, I doubt double deckers will be able to replace them as I don't think they will be able to fit under bridges such as the railway bridge on Burwood road.
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
The Orana-bodied Scanias are the oldest three models in the both the STA and TSW (TS R6) fleets, but STA has been pretty keen to also get rid of the O405NH (the oldest gas-powered Merc). At the end of June, immediately before R6 was transferred, the approximate percentages of these four models withdrawn from service were 24% for the CRBs (gas-powered Scanias) and half that for each of the others. It'll be interesting to see whether this concurrent withdrawal continues, in just STA or in both fleets.
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
I believe the issues with the gas O405NHs is that the gas tanks have to be replaced after a certain number of years and this is quite an expensive exercise for an aging bus. On the flip side, the average age needs to be kept below 12 years so withdrawing 18 year old buses instead of one that are over 25 will cause a different problem.
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
There will be quite a number of new Scania buses joining the fleet in the near future around the time when many timetabled services will be overhauled, many of the O405 NH gas Mercs are tipped to be replaced before the Scania gas units.

I don't know if you guys have read a PDF document called Information about the age and maintenance of Sydney buses, but it mentions that the last ones are due to be replaced in 2022 so not too soon.
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
I wonder whether the LR delay has caused planning problems with STA, as I assume that would enable some reductions.
Presumably also the buses bought for the Chatswood-Epping rail replacement will also cascade to other services come Mar/April 2019.

Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
I guess the LR delay is less than ideal since it would have definitely allowed the oldest Scania 14.5m buses to be retired from P without affecting capacity. The new Volgren B8 Optimus buses look like the natural replacement to those units at P.
Stu made the point O405NH gas Mercs being replaced before Scania gas units isn't there the issue of the gas tanks at depots as well with P's the next to go.

There are some points to that document such as Mark 5 O405 Mercs they've been replaced already with Scania VSTMs.

But not STA or TSA as they are Hillsbus and Transdev.moa999 wrote:I wonder whether the LR delay has caused planning problems with STA, as I assume that would enable some reductions.

Will there be a farewell tour for these 0405NH's?

Has anyone noticed that there is rust forming on the outside of some of the Scania L113TRBs and Mercedes 0405NHs?
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
I can not see the replacement buses for Epping-Chatswood go to STA.moa999 wrote:I wonder whether the LR delay has caused planning problems with STA, as I assume that would enable some reductions.

That is a joint venture between CDC and Transdev-who will end up with those buses at the conclusion of the contract.
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
CDC & Transdev do have quite a few non air-conditioned buses and/or non wheelchair accessible buses to replace. Anyways ECRL buses are owned by the government so can't TfNSW move these buses around.

Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
TfNSW would own them, but if they aren't to current STA spec (single leaf rear door, etc) doubtful they would go there.
It's a shame that TfNSW doesn't make standard specs for issues like this across the whole fleet.

3414 has been withdrawn today
Re: State Transit / Transit Systems Ansair Orana Retirement
I noticed a little giveaway in Scania L113TRBs at P being retired fairly soon none of them I've observed are carrying any sort of advertising and also the Volvo B8RLEs in daily service.

I don't think there would be much aftermarket for old 14.5s, mainly due to limitations on where they can be used.

The withdrawn ones so far have been used for parts. Mostly junk status with rust/structural issues.Swift wrote:What about the 12.5m low entry diesels?
