Cross River Rail Link

Post by 1of55 »

The Cross River Rail Tunnel ,which started out as a proposed rail only tunnel but morphed into a larger diameter tunnel with a rail tunnel and a bus tunnel of limited head room over the top, under the previous Queensland government, is now to be a rail only tunnel again. The planned bus tunnel clearance was to be not much above 3.3 metres in height, much like the ‘snake’ in the Queen Street bus station and the buses would have traveled in groups to enable orderly passenger loading at the underground stations. All is now in the past. But the bottle neck at the Cultural Centre interchange and Melbourne Street portal Bus way tunnel remains.

It is within the BCC's power to fix the bottleneck. Just put the West End bound buses in the general traffic lane then you don't need the combined West End and South Bank bound phase in the traffic light cycle.

They just choose not to.

Good thing that the BaT is dead. It was pretty rabid.

August 24 2017 Cross River Rail business case released for scrutiny.
The business case for Brisbane's Cross River Rail has finally been released for public scrutiny.
Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the document presented a "compelling case for action".
More videos Cross River Rail: flyover.
The new Cross River Rail proposal features a 10 kilometre rail link including almost six kilometres under the Brisbane river and CBD.
"It says population and employment growth in the south-east will be very strong over the next 20 years," she said.
Ms Trad said the business case included the latest information on the impact of policy and demographic changes over the past 12 months.

The cost-benefit ratio for the project is now 1.41, up from 1.21 in the 2016 business case.
"This means that for every $1 invested in the Cross River Rail project, $1.41 is returned to the people of Queensland," Ms Trad said.
The increase was due to the inclusion of the European Train Control System, the introduction of "fairer fares" and updated demographics, Ms Trad said.
Total daily bus and rail trips are predicted to climb from 510,000 to more than 880,000 in 2026 and to more than 1.1 million by 2036, according to the document.

Ms Trad said the south-east Queensland rail network had a choke point preventing extra train services being brought into regions like the Gold Coast, Logan, Caboolture and the Redlands.
"Nearly 2 million people will move into south-east Queensland over the next two decades and with some lines, like the Gold Coast, already operating at 100 per cent capacity during peak periods, we need to build Cross River Rail before we reach a crisis point," she said.
Ms Trad said the majority of employment opportunities would still be in the Brisbane local government area, which would put increasing pressure on transport.
"Bus passenger numbers will almost double from 77,800 to 149,700," she said.
"Train passenger numbers will more than triple from 51,700 to 160,300.
"So we must act now before we reach a crisis."
The business case release came after Infrastructure Australia claimed the benefits of the $5.4 billion, 10.2-kilometre link were "significantly overstated".
That assessment prompted Ms Trad to slam IA's analysis as based on mistakes and assumptions.
The LNP has repeatedly criticised the government for not releasing the business case, with Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls stating previously: "If the project stacks up they should release the business case".
In the 2017-18 Queensland budget, Labor committed to fund the $5.4 billion project alone, after the federal government failed to allocate any money in its budget.
The document, prepared by Building Queensland, is more than 240 pages long, with commercially-sensitive information removed.
Property Council of Australia Queensland executive director Chris Mountford said the release of the business case provided transparency around the state's justification for the project.
"A publicly available business case will enable industry, and the wider community, to have the opportunity to fully engage in a discussion about the merits of the project," Mr Mountford said.
Mr Mountford also welcomed the government's decision to fully fund the project rather than resorting to "value capture" models he said would ensure the full uplift potential of the project was not compromised.
"It is important to remember that property owners already directly pay infrastructure charges, GST, stamp duty, land tax, local government rates, capital gains tax and a raft of state and local government fees when developing and owning property. Most of these taxes already increase when the value of a property increases," he said.

Now that BCC have decided to sink Cultural Centre Station there is no need for any kind of road/bus component to Cross River Rail.
I just wish all the politicians (federal LNP, state LNP, One Nation etc) would stop using this project for political gain and just get behind it so this vital project can finally be built.

As part of the Brisbane Metro project a new underground bus station will be built that connects to the busway at one end and the Victoria Bridge at the other end, taking all the services using the Busway/Metro away from the surface of Melbourne Street and the Melbourne Street/Grey Street Interchange. The Victoria Bridge will also become a bus only bridge and have cars removed from it.

With it looking like Labor will win government in their own right, it looks like this project will be going ahead in full.

How confident are you of that? What will happen about the remaining at grade intersections at William St and RCH Herston? Will they run driverless vehicles through those places or does the metro have drivers?

Rail Express --> Compliance strengthened in Cross River Rail project
A new governance structure for the Cross River Rail project will ensure that contractors deliver on time and to budget, announced Minister for Cross River Rail, Kate Jones.

Lead contractor, CPB Group, has been caught up in controversy in delivering the West Gate Tunnel in Victoria, and the Queensland government is attempting to avoid similar contractual disputes.

“It is clear to me and to Cabinet that now we have moved from the procurement phase to the construction phase of the project we need to beef up compliance,” said Jones.

In a statement, Jones and the Queensland government outlined that the Delivery Authority will report to the Minister directly, a compliance unit will oversee contractor commitments, and the board will be restructured in April, when their current term expires.

“While the construction project is currently on track and on budget, it is early days,” said Jones.

“I want to ensure I have the right people with the right skills to deliver this project and hold CPB and Pulse Consortium to account.”

Jones also announced that local businesses will be able to get involved in the Cross River Rail project, with the Queensland government announcing a new website will go live today, February 27.

200 local companies are already providing goods and services to the rail project, however the new website hopes to provide further opportunities at various stages across the project.

The next wave of subcontractor opportunities will be in tunnelling and station works, said Cross River Rail minister, Kate Jones.

“This will be the one stop shop for anyone who wants to work on Cross River Rail,” she said.

“If you’re a local subby with the right expertise, we want you to apply to work on the biggest project in Queensland’s history.”

Jones visited the worksite at Woolloongabba to inspect progress on the rail project. Already, 140 piles have been sunk to stabilise the station box, 5m out of a total 32m have been excavated, and 8 of 132 piles have been sunk to build the ramp for the tunnel boring machines to access the site.

“Construction will ramp up in 2020 and locals will see more workers on Cross River Rail sites throughout the city,” said Jones.

Contractors already involved in the project include local construction company Wagners, which won a $40 million contract to supply precast concrete segments.

Another company, Multhana Property Services, will provide cleaning and maintenance services at project worksites.

“Multhana is a great example of a proud Queensland company benefiting from Cross River Rail,” said Jones.

“They’re doing a great job and already have eight staff working on the project, with that number set to grow as more worksites are established.”

Work on the Cross River Rail project is expected to be completed in 2024.

The Queensland Cabinet and Ministerial Directory---> Cross River Rail breaks through at Roma Street
Meanwhile, Mr Bailey also announced further upgrades were slated at Roma Street station following a decision to keep the Inner Northern Busway (INB) at Roma Street on its current alignment.

“We’d initially proposed putting the busway underground, but further assessment and consultation with the property sector showed commuters were more likely to change between above ground bus and rail services rather than the rail services arriving underground, and that leaving the INB at grade would not compromise future development in the precinct,” he said.

“As part of the Roma Street Station rebuild, we’ll therefore upgrade the busway, including extending the length of bus Platform 1, and refurbish the existing subway that connects all 10 of Roma Street’s above ground platforms,

“Those refurbishments will bring it in line with the look and feel of the new underground station and the main station plaza, which will be a win for commuters and a better value for money outcome.”

Mr Bailey said TBM Merle was also expected to breakthrough at Roma Street in the coming weeks, with both continuing through to the project’s northern portal at Normanby and emerging by the end of the year.
