Sydney Metro West announced
Re: Sydney Metro West announced
$1.96bn Sydney Metro West tunnelling contract awarded to a Acciona (of CBD and South East Light Rail fame) Ferrovial joint venture.

Too bad they couldn't figure out how to put the precast factory in the The Bays area, previously there would have been plenty of spare land in the Rozelle good yards, but it's all taken up with Rozelle Interchange construction I suppose? Looks like the precast segments will have to be trucked all the way from Eastern Creek.

Isn’t there an existing facility at Eastern Creek?jpp42 wrote:Too bad they couldn't figure out how to put the precast factory in the The Bays area, previously there would have been plenty of spare land in the Rozelle good yards, but it's all taken up with Rozelle Interchange construction I suppose? It's noted that there is a X-over proposed east of The Bays, but no X-over immediately west of Hunter Street terminus. An interesting omission, given the expensive retro-fit of the scissors X-ing west of Bondi Junction station.

I wonder what was unsuitable about the Bankstown Airport location. That's much closer to Parramatta than Penrith, and aviation businesses generally benefit from being near each other, so being located at Bankstown should actually be an advantage compared to an off-airport location.

Not sure if discussed earlier, but is there a reason they chose to not have a station at Rosehill Racecourse, Silverwater or Newington?

Re: Sydney Metro West announced
Two obvious reasons - the capital cost, and the penalty in travel times between major stations.

Ok, but honestly neither of those make any sense when considering they get to choose the budget, and the times are what they are. It’s missing out on major housing and industrial areas, plus the Rosehill station could be an event day station they could convince the racecourse to pay for

BAYSWEST PLANNING.....
The Stage 1 masterplan for "Bayswest" - the White Bay power station precinct - is on display for comment UNTIL 31 MAY - NEXT TUESDAY!!
The arrangements for passenger interchange between Victoria Road buses and MetroWest are appalling! - ie - there isn't any!

How much need would there be for interchanging?

Re: Sydney Metro West announced
Same logic applies. why would you take a metro from the CBD to White Bay to catch buses that start from the CBD?

What about people coming from Victoria Road (Drummoyne, Gladesville, etc.) and then heading west? An interchange would let the avoid going to the CBD for trains - very handy as the bus to Parramatta takes ages!

Has there been any discussion or announcements in regards to beyond the CBD? As in where the line will continue to in stage 2?

That’s a little… indirect isn’t it? Wouldn’t Eastlakes, Maroobra or Coogee make more sense than Green Square?
Re: Sydney Metro West announced
No reason a line needs to be direct if it hits the important patronage generators - people underground won’t k ow the difference and it’s not like travel time would be much more than 15-20 minutes to the end of the line if it is similar speed to the current metro.

Re - WHITE BAY BUS-METRO TRANSFERS.
Department of Planning has sought public comment on its "Bays West Stage 1 draft Master Plan" dated August 2022 (11 pages). The Department claims the new document reflects consideration of previous comments (on their May 2022 (?) document).
BUT - on page 6, the new document (again) refers to transfers between Metro and LOCAL buses, That seems to be exactly what the previous document said - ie - "LOCAL" buses, which weren't defined, but had a stop shown right ouside the "Bays" station. There is no commitment to easy transfer between Metro and REGIONAL buses - ie - Victoria Road services to north west suburbs like Chiswick, East Ryde......
There was a Letter to the Editor on this subject in the Sydney Morning Herald of 6 September 2022, under "Tortuous transport".
Public comment on this latest document closes on 8.9.22.

They aren't going to do anything to compromise the one-seat ride that Sydney commuters so desire. There is no commitment to easy transfer between Metro and REGIONAL buses - ie - Victoria Road services to north west suburbs like Chiswick, East Ryde......
Diverting via White Bay will drive up travel times to the city, and I suppose they aren't interested in making people transfer to Metro. Look how hard Sydney has fought back on introducing transfers along the light rail, for example.

Re: Sydney Metro West announced
^^^^^^We've been thru this exercise already on this thread. Nobody is suggesting trunk buses should be "diverted" anywhere. The design of the $16 BILLION road interchange ramps should accommodate bus stops offering quick walks to the Metro. That's what was suggested in previous submissions and is the very thing which seems to have been ignored this time around.

Re: Sydney Metro West announced
Can I just add, that the only advantage with providing a more seamless interchange to the metro would be for those who wish to travel from the Balmain peninsular to the west. There are other options for those on the north side of the harbour on the Victoria Rd corridor, or even Drummoyne, which would be more direct. It would be foolhardy to force Victoria Rd bus commuters to interchange to the metro at White Bay to complete the last few kms of their journey to the CBD, in spite of what the metro purists might think. There are also other options to interchange in the CBD itself, depending on their destination. A bit of realism is needed here.
