New Country Trains
Re: New Country Trains
DIdn't they have equipment on the platforms for doing that on the V sets years ago?
Re: New Country Trains
Hopefully the seats will be bolted to face direction of travel on every trip.

Re: New Country Trains
In the images seen so far, there appears to be a pedal/peg on the base to lock the seat in position, so it might be possible to get a facing pair if 3 or 4 people are travelling together.lunchbox wrote: ↑Mon Aug 15, 2022 4:57 pm REVERSIBLE SEATING
Transport for NSW has advised TransitAdvocates on 15.8.22 as follows -
"The new Regional Rail fleet will have directional seating so that most passengers can face the direction of travel. Directional seating will be rotated by staff to face the direction of travel."

Unlikely, airline configuration is far more efficient.boronia wrote: ↑In the images seen so far, there appears to be a pedal/peg on the base to lock the seat in position, so it might be possible to get a facing pair if 3 or 4 people are travelling together.

Re: New Country Trains
The only (obvious) facility at Central is hoses to top up the water tanks?

Re: New Country Trains
From the brochure on bi-mode operation, "Trains arriving and departing Brisbane and Melbourne will use their own diesel power supply." Brisbane is understandable since it's 25 kV AC and would require extra equipment which wouldn't really be justified given the short section it would be useable on. But why couldn't the pantographs be used in Melbourne, doesn't it have a similar 1500 V DC system as Sydney? Does anyone know what the roadblocks are?

Re: New Country Trains
I don't think that any of the dedicated SG tracks around Melbourne are electrified, only some of the dual gauge lines?
Even the regional section of Southern Cross station seems devoid of wires.

Re: New Country Trains
There are hoses between most platforms, used for filling fresh water tanks on the V sets and DMUs

Re: New Country Trains
The bi modal trains are only a thing because of the ARTC issue and the lack of federal parliamentary discussion on the electrocution of the ARTC side of the national rail network that I've already mentioned in the railway observation thread
Re: New Country Trains
I once travelled in an XPT to Melbourne, it has a separate unelectrifed line throughout the Northern suburbs of Melbourne to Southern Cross. The electric northern suburban lines are away nearby from the unelectrifed line.

Re: New Country Trains
I can't see why it would be an issue for ARTC, as they are only leaseholders of most of the regional track they control in NSW. The track is still owned by the NSW government, now through the TAHE, and continues to operate regional passenger services. If any extension of electrification were to be carried out, ARTC wouldn't have to pay for it.Campbelltown busboy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 6:15 am The bi modal trains are only a thing because of the ARTC issue and the lack of federal parliamentary discussion on the electrocution of the ARTC side of the national rail network that I've already mentioned in the railway observation thread

Re: New Country Trains
The feds want 43% carbon reduction by 2030 so thr federal infrastructure minister and the pm would have negotiate with the states for a joint national rail electrification plan that's where the ARTC would have to work with state transport agencies to get things doneTranstopic wrote: ↑Fri Aug 26, 2022 11:27 pmI can't see why it would be an issue for ARTC, as they are only leaseholders of most of the regional track they control in NSW. Re: New Country Trains
ARTC have carried out significant capital work to the lines it leases. It still has over 40 years to go on its lease, so will be responsible for delivering any electrification in the next few decades. A significant portion of the funding would likely come from the federal government.Transtopic wrote: ↑I can't see why it would be an issue for ARTC, as they are only leaseholders of most of the regional track they control in NSW. Re: New Country Trains
Given the mess ARTC made of rebuilding the Albury line in Victoria, they would probably electrify the network with 12v DC model railway equipment. Also there is predicted to be a world wide shortage of Lithium by 2025-6 so where are all the batteries for new trains and the already promised buses around the country going to come from?

That lithium demand would include back up supply batteries for the electricity grid and batteries for electric cars1whoknows wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 7:46 am Given the mess ARTC made of rebuilding the Albury line in Victoria, they would probably electrify the network with 12v DC model railway equipment. Re: New Country Trains
Has anyone put a thought into what will happen to the XPT Sets once they become surplus to operations?……Any ideas as to which preservation groups may be in the running for being allocated one?……im thinking the National Rail Museum will be in the running but other than that?
Also, just putting this out there, how many groups might get a XPT Locomotive (power car) and get it repainted into any of the liveries that where used over the years, put it on a slab of concrete a couple of km’s out of town and it might say something like welcome to Dubbo .

Maybe one set for Thirlmere? And of course Dorrigo would want one.
