No need for more indulgent light rail serving rich people.

The West Metro at Olympic Park is what makes this light rail line necessary, especially with the service gap between SOP and Parramatta.

Wentworth Point will be the densest suburb in the country, and it needs more than buses and a slow ferry to serve it and transport people to the metro. Melrose Park and the western Victoria Rd corridor will all benefit from a quick trip to the metro that can get them to the city in less than 20.

Just put on more buses. They have an exclusive bridge with access to Rhodes railway station, so they are serving as feeders which buses do best.

That said due to the Strathfield-Lidcombe shutdown on the W/end I caught the ferry to Olympic Park ferry stop to get the bus to the stadium to watch the AFL... And man has Wentworth Point been developed.

The 526 which kind of connects to the ferry goes on this ridiculous route through the backstreets of Newington and around the stadium.

When the 525 is running at such a rubbish frequency at this moment, don't expect a bus from Rhodes to Wentworth Point and on to Parramatta.

As I said, feeders, serving Wentworth Point and Newington to Rhodes and Olympic park station and the future metro. Do it as one high frequency route. Use deckers or bendies. Light rail has proven too costly where buses as feeders will suffice to serve the two stations.
Are we going to have light rail in the second densest area in Australia too, and the third?

Melrose Park can easily be serviced by a Victoria Rd Rapid Transit bus route to both Parramatta and West Ryde and even Rhodes if the bridge across the Parramatta River eventuates. As mentioned above, it's only a short bus ride, or you can even walk from Wentworth Point to Rhodes. With Metro West confirmed, I've never seen the justification for the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2. This is more developer driven than any objective transport analysis.

Death to your feeble plan!

Have less routes but with more frequency. More people understanding the system and less confusion.

Regarding the Wentworth Point bridge, the 526 covers that. Why not increase that?

Also, why chop off Burwood-Strathfield from the 525 and keep it on the 526? The Northern Line provides the Rhodes<->Burwood connection.

The second stage of the Parramatta light rail has been revived after months of speculation over its future, with the NSW government set to allocate $50 million to the project in next week’s state budget.

Agree. It's a waste of money, when Wentworth Point can be adequately serviced by an enhanced feeder bus service to Rhodes and Sydney Olympic Park, including the future Metro West station.

It should be remembered that the original intention was to provide a light rail link between Parramatta and Macquarie Park and so far that has not been realised. It's most unlikely that it will ever be extended from Carlingford to Epping. As I keep reiterating, the only way to achieve that original proposal is to branch the line, which could still be done, from Dundas along Kissing Point Rd and the reserved Eastwood County Rd corridor to Macquarie Park. It would run in its own ROW for most of the route with only minimal property resumptions required. This would be far more beneficial for the transport network as a whole in connecting Sydney's major strategic employment centres.

That idea was dead the moment the state government and TfNSW took the proposal off Paramatta council. It switched from providing a transit corridor between the centres of Paramtta to Macquarie park to being an enabler for high-density development along the chosen routes.

Stage 2 has to happen to 'fix' the traffic swamp they created by allowing all that development at Wentworth point without thinking about how all those residents are to get in and out of their high rise enclave.

At least the high-rise horror that is Wolli Creek near me has a heavy rail station with 2 routes, although that hasn't stopped road traffic in the area being a bit of a disaster area.

You're probably right, but one can only live in hope. Stage 2 doesn't have to be light rail, or trackless trams. All it needs is a beefed up rapid transit bus service using artics connecting Victoria Rd from Parramatta with Wentworth Point, Rhodes and Sydney Olympic Park via the new bridge across the Parramatta River. It's only going to be a feeder service to the rail stations anyway, regardless of whether it's light rail or bus.

I'm still sceptical of whether Stage 2 as light rail will happen as it is still to be demonstrated by a business case that it's viable. IMO, throwing $50m at it for further investigation is just a delaying tactic until it is inevitably canned after the next election, if they get in.

From memory, there is a major development scenario along the north side of the river which would bring a major increase in population, so, combined with Wentworth Point, the capacity of tram would be needed. It's that old issue in Sydney - buses simply can't provide the capacity but the planning scenario may not justify rail. The long term rail plan does include a line (presumably metro) between Parramatta-Carlingford-North Ryde.

What's the difference between "trackless trams" and "a beefed up rapid bus service using artics." Isn't trackless tram just a fancy name for artics?

They're guided buses, so they are different from a normal bus. Never proved successful yet, particularly financially.

The "trackless trams" appear to be double-ended rubber-tyred multi-articulated units. You only have to look at that promotional picture of the trial unit in China and see the trailing unit wandering around in the adjacent traffic lane to wonder how serious development is.

What would you call those trams in Europe that have overhead power, rubber tyres and a single, central, guide rail?
