Hon Eric E Reece, Premier of Tasmania, opened the then new depot on 26th November 1973. Due to a major Bass Highway reconstruction through Burnie it was necessary to obtain a new site for the MTT's operation as the Mount Street depot, occupied since 1959, was to be 'swallowed up' in the project. My photos from 1973 show the depot in 'as new' condition with Bedford vehicles still operating Burnie's services. As can be seen the fleet mainly departed the depot via the rear entrance after refuelling. The final photographs were from the look-out above Menai Hotel.

It is only ONE-WAY in the depot Bedford-29. Access from the front, and exit via the bowsers @ the rear. COOL "aerial" shot

Should do a shot of the depot next time I'm up on the hill.
Neil, often I've seen buses arrive at Wellington St and exit Strahan St, whoops!

Re: MTT's Strahan Street depot, South Burnie
I have just realised METRO's South Burnie depot will be 50 years old on November 26th, 2023. It was opened on 26th November 1973 by the Premier of Tasmania, Hon. Eric E Reece, after moving from the original Norton's Motors Mount Street site due to major roadworks about to commence requiring the depot site. The former Mount Street MTT [Metropolitan Transport Trust] site is now part of the Bass Highway which split the town [now city]. South Burnie depot once housed a fleet of 22 Bedford petrol buses but has since downsized to the current 13 units. Interested forum viewers could revisit this post to note changes to the fleet fleet over the 50 year period.
