Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
So you have to ask, why did CAF supply trams that they would have known did not meet those parameters?

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
Yes there's certainly an inconsistency between the widely accepted minimum curve radius for a fixed bogie tram being 25 metres in regular service and the minimum curve radius on IWLR being 20 metres (at Hay St). It seems that both TfNSW and CAF have simply accepted the risk and the gamble ultimately didn't pay off. Skimp upfront, pay later.

We pay later, not the agency.

BUSES ON LRT TRACKS....
I note "route" buses using the Anzac Parade LRT tracks. Can private buses also do so, without penalty?

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
There is no signage restricting use to TJH buses, but there are limited points for safe access or egress from the tracks.
But there is little advantage for a bus to use it, other than the inbound sections between Todman Ave and Dacey Ave.

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
The question being asked is private as in privately operated, rather than TfNSW contracted, services.

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
All the signage along that section reads "trams only", so technically it seems the X buses shouldn't even be using it.
The Allison Rd shared section refers to "STA approved vehicles only".

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
I expect the limit on access means bus operators are supposed to be inducted on safely operating alongside the trams.
Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
The Australian Road Rules (and standard in every state in this case) state that tram lanes can be used by public route buses and service vehicles.
All the professional bus drivers on this forum should know that surely!

Don't most buses have a raising feature?

The old are they trams of light rail vehicles discussion.
Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
For the purposes of the law, an "LRV" is a tram and it runs on a tramway or tram lane.

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
The signage in Kingsford is a bit confusing. There are numerous black-n-white signs with the tram symbol over the word "ONLY", while all the traffic lights for trams also contain the "B" light!

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
That must be one of those newfangled trackless trams I've heard about. I didn't realise those also ran in coupled units. Good thing it's not a bus with a trailer attached. Is that actually legal on the other side of the Nullarbor?

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
I did notice today that there are BUS - TRAM - LANE signs painted over the tracks at intersection entry points.

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
Why can't bus replacements run down george st from circular quay when the light rail is under maintenance?
Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
Whole purpose of a closure is to give maintenance crews access to the right of way. A bit hard to do if buses are running on it.

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail
They could run them down Elizabeth St.
But the 343 covers this section, the 320 part of it. Both stop close to Chalmers St LR. I don't know why these are not offered as alternatives.
Most L3 passengers can catch the 396 to/from CQ without the need to change. Most L2 passengers could use the 373 to/from Oxford St connecting with the 333 to /from CQ.
