Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Fours today are so good that the V6 is redundant unless your putting it in a performance car. For a family sedan who's purpose is transport, today's technology makes the four a satisfying drive for most buyers.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
I happen to own a Camry in the current shape, with the non hybrid four cylinder. A decent enough car, but I do miss the V6 power that the Magnas I owned before it had to offer.

You have to ask was out worth the extra fuel? For me the sound and smoothness makes it worth it.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
The Magna that I had before the Camry was the Sports version, with extra power over the standard Magna and a five speed auto in place of the four speed most Magna variants had. The Camry is certainly more fuel efficient than that, however it isn't significantly better on fuel than the TH Magna wagon I had previously, still with a 3.5L engine, but just the four speed box. The Camry and TH Magna both got around 10-11L/100km of mostly urban running, the Magna Sports was always around 12-13L/100km. I feel I've said Magna too many times in this post. Magna.
Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
To compensate for the loss of the V6, they are beefing up the non hybrid 4 cylinder engine with more power and an 8 speed automatic.
I remember they dumped the 4 cylinder Magna for the TH model and offered solely the V6 engine in both 3.0l and 3.5l capacities, then the 3.0 litre was dumped during the TJ model(around 2001-2002 I think).

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
I'm not sure if it's compensating for the loss of V6, or just bringing it in line with the American version which already had the new four cylinder engine and eight speed auto.

Speaking of Toyota Camrys, here's a Holden Apollo I came across the other day and it's in beautiful faultless condition. I was astounded. It's a credit to the owner or former owner. This is a classic example of a first to see will buy car.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
In the McDonald's drive thru getting lunch, the car behind me today was a 1990s Honda NSX. These are rarer than a Lamborghini or Ferrari. These Hondas go for 6 figures now. Very nice car.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
I still see a lot of Apollo's around in Melbourne, usually used as the second car. Usually the wide bodied variety as Swift posted above. They are usually in very good nick and still look good today without all the electronic trickery found in new cars. The Apollos are more likely to have had good lives with private owners, rather than an equivalent Camry that may of started life with a big fleet and may of been worked very hard.

I also saw a previous body shape Apollo the other day as I was driving and it appeared very straight as well.

Saw an orange HQ 4-door Monaro spotted in Seymour St behind Costco in Ringwood but no idea if it was a genuine Monaro or just a modified Kingswood. The car was surprisingly very quiet, unlike the usual burble of a 253/308 I was expecting (unless of course it was a crummy old red six).

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
^I bet they want $1 million dollars for it just " because it's old and rare". They were a seriously mediocre offering in 1971 but get treated like a Maybach simply because most have gone to the rubbish bin by now.
PS: why am I practically the only one putting up pics of late? Everyone has a camera in their pocket, yet it's like the 1990s around here.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Was doing a random Grays Online search and found this 1982 Toyota Corona.

My neighbour had one of these, an ex govt manual station wagon.
Hint: to find some automotive treasure, type in a Google search, name of car+graysonline, ie Toyota Corona+graysonline and see what comes up.

Here's a Holden ad from the golden early 80s, the best period in the history of the world.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Saw a light brown Daimler MK2 (aka Jaguar) outside Bunnings in Ringwood yesterday. Looked to be unrestored but in good condition (paint was a fairly scratched/cracked though), and had a towbar fitted.
As for a weird sighting, a 90s Holden Rodeo 1 tonner on club plates, didn't think they were that collectible!
A few days ago I saw a red early 80s Toyota Cressida in the Ringwood Square underground carpark.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Was it in immaculate condition? It's probably a rort taking advantage of it's technical eligibility.Heihachi_73 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 1:21 pm

I loved early 80s Cressidas when they were fairly new. They seemed so luxurious in the days when power windows were the preserve of high trim models only.

Nope, the Rodeo was in the condition you'd expect an old work ute to be.
Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Red or maroon? The early 80's one had that crushed velour interior and matching plastics.Heihachi_73 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 1:21 pm A few days ago I saw a red early 80s Toyota Cressida in the Ringwood Square underground carpark.

Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Definitely red and not maroon, it also had a custom black and white number plate which was older than the car (it had the 2 letter, 3 number format).
Re: Rare and interesting car sightings
Speaking of V6 powered Camry's, a retro review from Motorweek in the US.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj3r-o-VLZ4
We had a more luxurious version imported alongside the locally built 4 cylinder in that generation Camry.

Here's an in depth tour including a drive!

I briefly corresponded with the host of Motorweek John Davis via YT live chat a few times last year during lockdown. Always happy to answer questions car related and sometimes non car related too.
