The Seddon Bus in Victoria 1948-1974

Post by system improver »

Here are some photographs of Seddon buses in Victoria. They come from the John Masterton Collection, with photographers, JM (1,3,6,8,9) Geoff Mann (2), and Bruce Tilley (4,5,7,10,11,12).

First, one of the four Grummet bodied Mark 4s that went to the Spencer companies (Spencer Bus Lines, Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Services) from 1948 to 1950 and one of six produced to this design. The other two went to W Sinclair & Sons as their first new bus and the second to Launceston MTT in 1952 from stock. This picture is the second Seddon acquired by Spencer and was registered in early 1949 as MV 161 and was a 29 seat (perimeter) vehicle. It was registered HPU 543 (as pictured) in 1963 when it was sold to Royena Motors.

Second, Motor Body Assemblers (MBA) of Camperdown NSW, bodied nine Mark 4s to this design. Seven were sold to Victorian operators, Progress Bus Lines (2), Jenkins, Trotter, Northcote Garage and Bus Service (2) and Mylon's. The other two went to Launceston MTT in 1952 as stock. This picture is one of the Progress Bus Lines vehicles which was sold early in life to Deveson's. It was registered PW 135 (31P) in April 1950 and was the last of this design to operate in Victoria.
Image

Symons & Fowler bodied a Mark 4 for T Bell, one of the multiple operators of the Melbourne to Mid Brighton route 2 before the formation of MBBL in 1954. It too was new in April 1950 and was registered PT 772 (29P). After service with MBBL after amalgamation, it was sold to Hampton Green and it is pictured in its days with Bell. Symons & Fowler chose not to expose top of the aluminium radiator in their body design.
Image

Another former MBBL operator was G Cianciarulo who bought this 2 door Symons & Fowler Mark 4 (29P) new in December 1951 for his Melbourne to Gardenvale route 1. It too went to Hampton Green as pictured after a brief period with MBBL.Image

In December 1954, this Symons & Fowler Mark 4 (or maybe Mark 6) was new to McMillan Motors of Ararat reg GFJ 785, but it soon found its way in 1956 to, you guessed it, Hampton Green. It was a 31 seater.
Image

Roy Weber bodied a number of vehicles for Portsea Passenger Service including this 45 seat Mk 11R with an underfloor Perkins R6 engine. It was registered as GLD 974 in May 1956.
Image

Just one month later in June 1956, Mylon's acquired a similar vehicle, 41 seats, and it was sold to Langdon of Mytleford. It was registered as GNT 472.
Image

Parlorcars, a Withers Company, purchased a Mark 11 with Symons & Fowler bodywork for 41 passengers in coach style seating and was registered GRC 358 in April 1957. During its life with Parlorcars, it acquired an AEC engine and badge! It was sold to Shave in 1967 where it is pictured.
Image

Freighter (Victoria) bodied a 2 door Mark 11 for the Royal Children's Hospital in December 1957 with a body style similar to the Monobuses which were also coming from Freighter (Victoria). It was sold to Nuline Bus Lines in 1963 and was a 35 seater. Low floor buses were still a while off!
Image

Another Symons & Fowler body on a Mark 6 with Perkins P6 engine was new to Bennett of Charlton in February 1959, a 33 seater registered GXM 368. It was the last Seddon bus to operate in Victoria, remaining in service until 1974.
Image

And probably the last new Seddon in Victoria, HEX 226 was new to Bridges of Cheltenham in July 1960 with a 30 seat Cheetham & Borwick body. It briefly went to Grenda with Bridges routes and was then sold to Elston in 1964 and subsequently to Southland Bus Services in June 1965.
Image

And finally, a fully imported 1949 Seddon Mark 4 which was first purchased by the SA Electricity Trust after being new to BEA in Britain. It then came to Peninsula Bus Lines in Feb 1956 and then was acquired by Allen of Crib Point in 1962, where it is pictured.

Fascinating pix, especially the exposed radiator buses. The UK built body design appears to have influenced the Aussie body builders to a degree, and hundreds of similar bodies were carried on Seddon chassis in Singapore and Malaysia too at the time

The only other Seddon buses that I'm aware of, not referred to above, that operated in Victoria were a C&B bodied Mark 4 of 2/53 for Waddell on route 10A, another C&B bodied Mark 4 (Mark 6?)for I J Cook & Son of Geelong in 4/56 and two vehicles with CCMC bodies and UF Perkins 6/354 engines for Barnes, one a rebodied C&B bus that was new to Progress BL in 11/54 and the other constructed on a 'spare' chassis found at Queens Bridge Motors. Both went into service in early 1963 and both went to Love's of Dubbo. Perhaps someone has some pics of them at Love's.

Brilliant set of photos System Improver. Many thanks for posting. Brings back a few memories of similar buses/coaches here in the UK.

I photographed one of the CCMC bodied UF Seddons in Narranderra in the mid 60's before it went to Love of Dubbo and was owned by Russell of Narrandera at the time as MO 3328. On the same trip i came a MBA bodied Seddon MO 4036 operated by Findlay of Barrellan but unfortunately the film it was on has been lost somewhere along the way which is a pity really as it also contained some other very interesting old vehicles which were still around at that time.

Yes, this was one of the Ex Barnes vehicles, HTG 622, constructed on the QBM 'spare' chassis. Originally number 37 for Barnes, it passed to Granger's Bus Service (23/10/63) as their 13 with the sale of route 74A, Moonee Ponds-Williamstown (route 472 today) and went to Russell in December 1964. It subsequently went to Love at a date unknown to me.

Pity about your MBA pic. Can you remember what sort of windows it had - drop or slide?

Sorry system improver, 40 years ago is just to long to recall the windows on the MBA Seddon. :)

@system improver, do you have any details of the ex BEA UK rego number of the Seddon bodied Seddon MkIV and possibly the chassis number?

Alas, no - only that it was a 1949 build.
