[D] The different Bus types of Berlin (10 pics)

Hello everyone!

As I promiesd … here a thread with photos of our many different Bus types we have got in Berlin.
I tried to upload as much different types as I could, but there are missing the 15m Bus MAN NL 313 and MAN NG 313. Maybe later.

First let me explain …
• in Berlin the BVG is responsible for the Bus, Tram and Underground transport. The S-Bahn (urban rail) and the local/regional trains belong to the DB (Deutsche Bahn, German Railway).
• Berlin has got almost 150 Bus routes, 22 Tram routes and 10 Underground lines (at day).
• Some Bus routes are served by sub companies.

Let's start with the old one.

This (type of) Bus doesn't drive anymore. The Mercedes Benz O 405N 1 was built from 1992 to 1993, at least the ones which drove in our town.
The 1071 now is part of the Club for historic Buses. On this photo you see it at the open day in August 2011.



The O 405N 2 was built 1995~. It was token out of service in 2010.



The MAN NL 263 is the oldest Bus type we've still left. It was built in 2000.
The front of the BVG Buses earlier showed a picture of the Brandenburg Gate. But since 2009 all the Buses show "Be Berlin". A campaign of Berlin Senate to which the BVG does belong. (Btw., I hate this campaign xP)



Mostly you'll see these Buses. The Citaro family (here a Citaro I). We have got Citaro I, II, LE (all 12m), L (15m) and G (18m).
The one you see on the photo, 1306, sadly burned in August 2010. More than 5 Buses in Berlin burned out. It was the engine to blame but now the Citaro I got a thermometer and an automatic extinguisher in the engine bay.



Our only Volvo, the Volvo 7000. Drivers and Bus fans don't like this type. It's because of the undependable technology.



A Citaro I and a MAN hybrid Bus. The hybrid Buses only are driving on one route. This test for an innovated technology doesn't work that good …



The 15m long Citaro L (L for long).


Berlin is famous for its double decker Buses. Since in Berlin are driving Buses (since the 19th century) we have got double deckers. I like them very much!
It's the ND 202 on the photo, build in 1995, token out of service in 2009.

And here comes our beloved MAN SD202!
On the left hand side you can see it, it was built from 1988 to 1992, token out of service 2009 but it was needed once again in 2011 because the BVG had not enough new Buses!
The sound is great, the feeling is great … every fan like the SD 202. On the right hand side you can see the only double decker type left, the DL, built from 2005 to 2010. We've got lot of them.

The release of OMSI Bus Simulator inspired me to research Berlin's public transport and it's peculiarities.

To this day, Berlin remains one of the only cities in Germany that operates and continues to buy double-decker buses, and what's more, these buses look to be specially designed for Berlin operation. The double-staircase layout that originated in the 1980s continues today and from what I have seen works very efficiently, particularly during the busy peak periods.

Berlin is a city that depends highly on MAN vehicles. It seems that cities close to Stuttgart or Ulm tend to rely more on EvoBus products whereas cities close to Augsburg tend to rely more on MAN products. Clearly there's political motive in those decisions!

Very interesting post there 3575. As PBCNG said, Since the release of the OMSI Bus Simulator, I also have been rather interested in the BVG Fleet. Some very interesting and unique buses!

Mr. OCB, you should post a screenshot of 3942 set up as an M37 to compare with the real 3942 in the last shot

You should be lucky you can travel by your Buses for longer time! It's sad every time an old vehicle like the O 405N Buses or the SD 202 is going to be token out of service.
And by the way, the Historic Clubs have not so much space to park the oldtimers.


@PoweredByCNG: Maybe your idea from MAN and EVOBus Buses is right, I don't know. I haven't seen so many towns in Germany by now. But as far as I know, you can find the Citaro Buses in almost every German town/village … Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt (Main), Potsdam …

It's an amazing program. But you shouldn't forget it only shows you West Berlin (district Spandau) in the 80s.
And this was 3954 in rl.

Nice, shall be making my 1st visit to Germany when I visit Stuttgart over the New Years week. Berlin will be on a subsequent visit.

I hope I don't misunderstand you because of my bad English, but the Wikipedia photo is a modern DL-Bus from 2005.
It's normally the only Bus type you can travell by on the Bus service 100 nowadays.
