Driver inserted priority
Driver inserted priority
Are there any examples in Australia or New Zealand of priority phases, be it for buses or trams, being triggered by closing of doors by drivers?
Re: Driver inserted priority
Can you explain further by what you mean "priority phases" as I and assume others don't.Myrtone wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 2:17 am Are there any examples in Australia or New Zealand of priority phases, be it for buses or trams, being triggered by closing of doors by drivers?

Presumably at traffic lights.
Watching how a tram in Canberra makes its way about, I suspected they have the ability to "call" the traffic lights when they are ready, as the tram's phase seems to coincide with just after the doors close.

Re: Driver inserted priority
It happens at some stops on the Sydney L2/3 lines.

Ok cool, thanks.
On high capacity tram routes it makes sense.
I believe its also used in Dubai as the trams never seem to wait long.

Re: Driver inserted priority
If I remember correctly, in cities like Melbourne, trams can trigger traffic signals to ensure smoother traffic flow when closed.google baseball wrote: ↑

Re: Driver inserted priority
But the closure of doors by drivers does not, however, trigger priority phases. I was referring to that.

Re: Driver inserted priority
In Sydney on L2/L3 traffic signal priority at some stops can be instigated by a button on the dash, but not by doors closing. At other intersections it sometimes triggered by in-track detectors. It seems a very haphazard system, sometimes there are long delays at intersections where there is no conflicting traffic.

Re: Driver inserted priority
Not an issue isolated to trams, it seems. Some intersections seem to function on a "one at a time, wait for your turn, dammit" basis.boronia wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 1:11 pmIt seems a very haphazard system, sometimes there are long delays at intersections where there is no conflicting traffic.

Well, this is driver inserted, but not by doors closing.boronia wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 1:11 pm In Sydney on L2/L3 traffic signal priority at some stops can be instigated by a button on the dash, but not by doors closing.
Re: Driver inserted priority
Usually for merging traffic to a major road to prevent the main flow slowing and risk of rear end collisions as people are more focused on whats behind and beside than infront. I think its a great idea.Merc1107 wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 7:01 pmNot an issue isolated to trams, it seems.boronia wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 1:11 pmIt seems a very haphazard system, sometimes there are long delays at intersections where there is no conflicting traffic.

Re: Driver inserted priority
Yes, if wait on doors closing you just added another delay. So driver requests the light sequence change process prior to being ready to depart. Probably saves 5 to 15 sec per intersection, adds up over a long route.
Re: Driver inserted priority
I fail to see that.
Re: Driver inserted priority
So no one has explained how the using closure of doors to insert priority would add another delay. By the way, it turns out the Paramatta light rail has places where signal priority is inserted by a ready-to-start (RTS) button. Might it be time we get this in Melbourne with the introduction of the G class.
Re: Driver inserted priority
If we are talking the same language then its a case of driver calling for light change then closing the doors just prior to the light sequence changing their way.
Re: Driver inserted priority
Won't happen, because apparently according to many "experts" Melbourne tram networks can learn nothing from Sydney tram design / operations.it turns out the Paramatta light rail has places where signal priority is inserted by a ready-to-start (RTS) button.
