My (initial) thoughts on the new changes:

1. Route 975 = high frequency service, which is good, but is there anything to gain from removing the Muswell & Treen streets section?
2. Route 950 (& stuff the 'X'): I know I'm rather obsessive over this one, given I lived in Inglewood for 11 years, and I'm pleased for the uptake in frequency, but come on! Every 7-8 mins in either direction on both weekend days, for most of the day: seriously? Is there really that much demand for such timings on the Sunday timetable... beyond the standard peak heading-home-from-shopping 4-6pm period, that is? Is it *really* that necessary to have that frequency on Christmas Day?? I'm somewhat surprised there hasn't been a first weekday service prior to 4am - yet - and surely it can't be that much longer before it's the first 24hr service in Perth.

On the topic of the 950 - even in the middle of 2020, when patronage was quite depressed, I caught Sunday 950s around lunchtime that were carrying fully seated loads (rigid bus). Patronage rebounds in many cities since COVID have been particularly strong (and often surpassing records) on weekends.

I don't see increasing the frequency as a wrong-move - although if there are capacity issues on the present timetable, it would be a hell of a lot more intelligent to be throwing articulated buses on the weekend 950s (which as I understand fall somewhere within the realm of "verboten" - apparently Transperth are still afraid of using their most valuable asset to their greatest extent) before increasing services when weekend penalty rates are in effect! However, let's not forget there's an election looming - boosting the 950 is undoubtedly part of the huge flood in service kilometres that have come with the Ellenbrook line (and is somewhat-necessary given Morley Station is not really within cooee of the Morley "CBD").

I'd also note that the 7.5 minute frequency upgrade ties in more consistently with trains every 15 minutes than a 10-minute frequency would. In fact the weekend daytime timetable allows a typical 4 minute connection window when travelling from Ellenbrook to central Morley via the new station. I have no idea whether that's actually a designated connection (since those usually apply to trains from Perth), but at such a high frequency I don't think it really matters.

As promised, here's the first part of my review of the Ellenbrook Line service changes. This really is going to be a monster series of posts :|

Morley and Noranda

Summary
  • The new network in this area is largely based on current routes, but with a number of changes including stronger terminii and a new cross-suburban route east of Mirrabooka
  • Notably, almost all services retain a direct link to central Morley and the Galleria Bus Station
  • Frequencies have improved in most cases, with two routes (353 and 975) upgraded to a bus every 15 minutes, 7 days per week
  • All other new routes to central Morley run at least every half hour on weekdays (i.e. no more hourly services), and this extends to the weekends on some routes
  • Route 354 (replacing current route 343) now has Monday-Saturday evening and Sunday daytime services for the first time
  • Routes 351, 353, 355, 356 and 975 all extend Sunday evening services to 11pm or beyond, joining the existing route 950.

Route 46
Despite only being introduced earlier this year, this route will see a substantial rethink serve the industrial area west of Tonkin Highway on its way to the new terminus at Morley Station. The number of trips is unchanged but the timetable has been made more peak-focused (at a clunky 36-minute frequency), while a reduced interpeak frequency of every 2 hours compares to the old timetable's hourly service at almost all times of day. Mertome Village, which only saw a twice-a-day deviation of the old route, is now served by every trip - although the direct link to Morley Galleria has been abandoned. Notably, this is one of only two routes (the other being the similar industrial-area route 47) to force a transfer to reach central Morley - unlike the approach taken elsewhere (e.g. Aubin Grove), every major route to the new Morley Station also serves the now-renamed Galleria Bus Station.

Route 350
As the only bus route to Noranda Station, this one unfortunately appears to be something of an afterthought. It only runs hourly outside of peak times (compared to the 15 and 30 minute weekday headways seen on almost all the Ellenbrook Line feeder routes), evening services are non-existent, and the eastern terminus is rather weak. Peak services are also mediocre at every 24 minutes, although this is shared with some other lesser feeders. It does improve coverage of northern Dianella, and the direct connection to Mirrabooka is many times faster than having to change buses in Morley - it's just a shame the frequency couldn't be any better.

Route 351
This route is a straightforward replacement of the north-south section of current route 344, offering a connection to the new Ballajura Station (while the new route 361 maintains a link between Alexander Heights and Morley). Peak services are now more consistent at a 12-minute frequency in both directions, compared to the 344 mostly running at 15-minute intervals. The Saturday 30-minute frequency will run for more of the day, and the gap of over 2 hours on Saturday nights will be plugged. Sundays meanwhile will see the largest improvement, with services doubling to every half hour. The span of operating hours will also improve throughout the week, running until midnight on weekdays and 11pm on Sundays while morning services will start earlier.

Routes 352 and 361
Noranda's two short feeder bus routes (346 and 347) have long been some of the weakest links in the Transperth network, running only from central Morley to nondescript suburban terminii with seemingly no thought given to making them useful for any other journey. This was reflected in the timetables, which saw a steady erosion in the number of services over the years. But no more - the two routes will be combined to create a new route 352, which will also connect to the new Morley Station for faster journeys to Perth. The stronger terminus means that the timetable is now more symmetrical in both directions, while weekday off-peak services will double to every 30 minutes and a later trip will leave Morley Station just before 9pm. Even the 24-minute peak service is actually slightly more frequent than the current half-hourly afternoon timetable. Unfortunately the rather convoluted route approaching Morley Galleria remains (inherited from route 347), and it takes a bit longer to travel to Morley from parts of the old route 346. However, the new route actually serves Noranda's shopping centre, which the old routes almost seemed desperate to avoid.

The western section of route 347 meanwhile has been replaced by the new route 361, which bypasses the convoluted McGilvray Avenue route in favour of a direct trip down Wellington Road. This offers similar frequency improvements to the 352, with half-hourly weekday services and a 20-minute peak frequency. The timetable is less symmetrical than the 352, with early morning trips only running towards Morley and evening trips only travelling to Alexander Heights - but this is still an improvement over the similarly-asymmetric route 347 in almost all cases. The 361 also extends to Alexander Heights shopping centre via Ballajura, maintaining a direct connection to Morley after the 344 is split into two separate routes. This however comes at the cost of a lesser (hourly) frequency on Saturdays, as well as a reduced span of hours throughout the week compared to the existing 344.

Route 353
A complete contrast to the Noranda feeders, route 345 along Beechboro Road North has seen many upgrades over the years to run as frequently as every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday. Its replacement, route 353, builds upon this success to be just a few trips short of the 7-days High Frequency standard, while also running until after 11pm on Sunday nights. As with route 352 this service will run at near-identical frequencies and operating hours in both directions - a marked improvement from the old route which suffered from poor contra-peak services and a ridiculously early (at 4pm) reduction to an hourly inbound frequency on Saturdays.

However, the new route will be shortened to terminate at Ballajura Station, leaving Bennett Springs to route 356. This route provides a similar overall number of trips to the current 345, but with a bi-directional 12-minute weekday peak frequency and improved Sunday operating hours coming at the cost of a reduction to a half-hourly service outside of peak times. Those seeking a single-seat trip to Morley also will now have to go the long way round, via the back streets of Lockridge. That said, most of Bennett Springs will still be within an 800 metre walk of the more frequent and direct routes 353 and 355, so this reduction is not without justification.

Route 354
For over 20 years, services along Bottlebrush Drive have seen almost no change other than a move from Broun Avenue to Morley Drive - despite having a worse service than even the Noranda feeders. In fact, the new route 354 reverts that route change in order to serve Morley Station, leaving a section of Morley Drive with no bus service at all. Like with many other routes it also extends to Ballajura Station, although in this case the timetable remains asymmetrical. It is, however, substantially improved at last, with new early morning, evening (until 10pm Monday to Saturday) and Sunday daytime services accompanying the obligatory increase to a half-hourly weekday frequency. The 24-minute peak frequency is still awkward however - and although the number of peak trips hasn't actually changed from the existing 343, this might be one of the worst routes to suffer from it.

Routes 355 and 47
Route 355 is mostly a direct replacement of the route 955 section between Morley and Whiteman Park, albeit with a minor alteration to replace the withdrawn route 342 along Broadway (bringing an improved service closer to residents as a result). Compared to the old route, the most significant improvement is a doubling the weekday interpeak frequency between Morley and Bassendean to every 15 minutes, achieved by running most trips as full-legnth. There are also more consistent contra-peak services with current 24-minute gaps all but eliminated, earlier Saturday morning trips towards Morley, and a much improved evening service that runs until after midnight Monday to Saturday and just before midnight on Sundays. Weekend services remain at every half hour, but they're now well co-ordinated with nearby route 356 so that there's effectively a bus every 15 minutes for those within walking distance of both routes.

The aforementioned route change left no service along eastern Collier Road however, so a new route 47 will be introduced to link it to Morley and Bassendean Stations. Perhaps reflecting the low-density industrial area it operates through, this route is a minimal and quite awkward affair (similar to the revised route 46), with a bus every 36 minutes at peak times and every 2 hours interpeak on weekdays only. Considering the nearby route 355 and Ashfield Station both offer services every 12 to 15 minutes all day, it will be interesting to see how this route performs in the longer term - particularly given the poor 36-minute frequency.

Route 356
This is largely a replacement to the current route 341, although it also covers part of route 342 along Broun Avenue. The route has been straightened somewhat in Eden Hill, running via Ivanhoe Street while leaving Lord Street exclusively to the 357 (previously 353), and it will also extend to Ballajura Station via Bennett Springs to replace part of route 345 (more on that under Route 353 above). The timetable builds upon the existing combined frequency of routes 341 and 342, with a more consistent 12-minute peak frequency, a 24-minute contra-peak frequency (which despite the non-clockface clunkiness is an improvement over gaps of an hour or more), and a Sunday timetable that's doubled to half hourly during the day while also running later into the night. Of particular note, there are a number of peak-period shortworkings between Ballajura and Beechboro, taking advantage of the new station to provide a 12-minute frequency in both directions.

Routes 950 and 950X
Since it was introduced as Perth's most frequent suburban bus route back in 2014, route 950 has been a runaway success with continuous incremental improvements made to the timetable. With the Ellenbrook Line it will be strengthened even further, with weekend services upgraded to every 7.5 minutes to match the interpeak weekday timetable. There will also be several small improvements throughout the week, including better early morning services, improved peak shoulder and contra-peak frequencies, and a new after-midnight trip on Friday and Saturday nights. Furthermore, the existing Limited Stops route 66 will be incorporated into the 950 timetable as route 950X, with a small number of additional trips in each direction and an extension to QEII Medical Centre replacing some UWA shortworkings.

Additionally, both routes are extended to the new Morley Station to compensate for its remote location in the centre of the Tonkin Highway. Interestingly, a large number of peak-direction trips won't actually serve the extension, although all trips on the 950X will run the full route. This link should do a reasonable (if imperfect) job of connecting passengers from Ellenbrook and surrounds to central Morley and Beaufort Street, but coming from elsewhere it'll generally be quicker to transfer at Bayswater to the CircleRoute or route 975. Speaking of which...

Route 975
One of Perth's earliest cross-suburban bus services (it was even part of the laughable late-80s Beeline network), the current route 371 has seen numerous upgrades from its humble beginnings as route 64. The Ellenbrook Line changes will now take the final steps to make it part of the growing High Frequency network, extending the 15-minute frequency to Sundays (which is a huge improvement from the five buses a day it ran 20 years ago). It will also run the 10-minute peak frequency for longer on weekdays, while the 15-minute daytime frequency will be extended somewhat on Saturdays. Operating hours are also improved throughout the week, in the early morning but particularly at night with services running until midnight Monday to Saturday and only slightly earlier on Sundays (I wonder how popular those late runs will be with bus drivers? ) The route will also extend through to Bayswater, justifying the reduction to route 40 (formerly 48) in this area earlier this year and providing a high frequency link from Bayswater to Morley on Sundays. There's a minor route change in Balga, bypassing Treen Street in favour of turning from Wanneroo Road straight onto Culloton Crescent - though I'm not sure what the thinking behind this change was.

To be continued......

I daresay 353 is the northern suburbs version of 507. Both a few weekend trips short of 900 series standards.

Also, if we were in Singapore, a route like 950 (and the old 501) would've been allocated a majority double decker fleet.

With opening of the new Ellenbrook Line, the existing Morley Bus Station will be renaming to Galleria Bus Station to avoid confusing, the timetables for respective bus routes are available from the earlier post. By end of service of route 955, Swan will no longer serves the Morley Galleria Bus Station as the new route 355 will be operated by Path except the CircleRoute bus services.

Ballajura and Alexander Heights

Summary
  • The new network upgrades two east-west routes (449 and 451) and one north-south route (the 970 extension to Landsdale) to run every 15 minutes throughout the day on weekdays, and a further route (450) is just a few trips away from meeting the same standard.
  • Weekend services are less impressive, but many routes are doubled to a half-hourly service.
  • The former Alexander Drive CityLinks (routes 360, 361 and 362) have been consolidated into a single north-south route 360 and an east-west route 362. Frequencies in Alexander Heights and Ballajura are improved, although peak services along Alexander Drive have been reduced.
  • New route 363 offers better coverage of the Malaga industrial area, albeit with a very limited service.
  • New route 452 covers many segments that have been withdrawn from other routes, mostly (but not always) at improved frequencies.
  • Once again there has been a focus on Sunday evenings, with services running until around 11pm on routes 360, 362, 450, 451 and the 970 extension (previously route 376).

Route 360
First up, we have a consolidation of the three Limited Stops services along Alexander Drive into a single route 360, following the same alignment as former route 361 and (mostly) extending the existing Alexander Drive frequencies to the entire route. Due to the Ellenbrook Line opening there has been a slight reduction in peak frequency, from every 4-5 minutes to every 6 minutes, while the 30-minute night frequency from Perth will start an hour earlier just before 8pm. There are also some improvements however, with additional morning contra-peak trips to Alexander Heights and an improved span of hours on weekends - most notably the final Sunday departure from Perth is over 90 minutes later at 10:35pm. One other detail - the stopping pattern has been altered to only run Limited Stops through the inner section that overlaps with route 960 (as far as Dianella Plaza). Beyond there, buses will now run all stops - although in practice, this only adds four stops each direction over a distance of 5km.

Route 362
With the new Ellenbrook Line just a stone's throw away from the Guadalupe Drive terminus, route 362 will logically be extended to the new Ballajura Station, and it will also be converted to a cross-suburban feeder service that partially replaces the withdrawn (and terribly infrequent) route 378 to Mirrabooka. Within Ballajura, peak services are more consistent providing a link to the train every 12 minutes, although only every second bus extends to Mirrabooka. The big improvement is seen throughout the rest of the day however, with services doubling to every 24 minutes in the contra-peak direction and every 30 minutes interpeak. Weekend services remain hourly, however as with so many other routes the span of hours has improved with Sunday trips extending past 11pm. For those further away from the railway the new route to Perth via the Ellenbrook Line is slightly slower than the old Limited Stops bus (and of course it forces a transfer penalty), but at least the weekday frequency improvements will help to mitigate against this.

Route 363
There isn't much to say here - this is a peak-only route, with an approximately half hourly service, that covers more of the Malaga industrial area. It also offers a direct connection to Mirrabooka Bus Station (and from there to surrounding suburbs), replacing some pretty convoluted journeys that are required today. The route is consistent with other recent efforts to improve services to industrial estates, and while it's very much on the infrequent side there is also a much-improved service on the nearby route 449. On that note...

Route 449
I think this one gets the "Most Improved" award :D Route 449 was introduced back in 2020 as a basic weekdays-only service along Beach Road between Warwick and Malaga, running every 20 to 30 minutes at peak times and hourly during the day. The eastern terminus naturally sparked speculation that it would one day serve the planned Malaga (now Ballajura) Station, and that is indeed what's happened. Far more significant, however, is the massive upgrade in services to every 10 to 12 minutes at peak times and every 15 minutes off peak, alongside the introduction of new weekend services (every half hour) and evening services throughout the week. This means that residents in the low socio-economic areas of Girrawheen, Koondoola and northern Mirrabooka will at last have a reasonable level of public transport service - not just towards Perth (via a choice of two train lines) but for a much wider range of trips than when many routes led only to central Mirrabooka.

By the way, an observation on how peak services are timed on these cross-suburban links: in short, they travel to both the Yanchep and Ellenbrook lines in the morning, and from both lines in the afternoon.

More specifically, in the morning there's a 10 minute frequency westbound to Warwick, and a 12 minute frequency eastbound to Ballajura. The reverse applies in the afternoon - every 10 minutes eastbound from Warwick, and 12 minutes westbound from Ballajura. Route 452 follows a similar pattern, but at half the frequency and serving Whitfords instead of Warwick.

Route 450
This route will see a lengthy extension to the new Ballajura Station, losing its northernmost Landsdale section to the new route 452 but forming another solid cross-suburban link between the Yanchep and Ellenbrook lines. It will also see a substantial improvement in service, running to the same 10-12 minute peak and 30 minute weekend frequencies as route 449, while evening trips will extend even later to midnight Monday-Saturday and 11pm on Sunday. However, unlike nearby routes 449 and 451 there remains a short weekday interpeak period when the frequency reduces to half hourly. I can only hope this route receives, as a relatively high priority, the extra 7 to 8 trips in each direction needed to bring it to a 15-minute weekday frequency.

Route 451
The replacement of the east-west section of route 344, this service offers an obligatory connection to Ballajura Station along with another set of worthy upgrades. The weekday off-peak frequency will double to every 15 minutes, providing another frequent cross-suburban connection between the Ellenbrook and Yanchep lines, while Sunday services will also double to every half hour and peak services will be more consistent and run for longer hours. Additionally, the span of hours will once again improve throughout the week, both in the early morning and more notably at night (to the same midnight and 11pm standards as route 450). This compares very favourably to the current 6:39pm last Sunday 344 trip from Warwick!

Side note: I find it interesting how the new post-344 routes are really an enhanced version of what we had 25 years ago. By which I mean that the 351 extends the old route 57, 361 replaces the former 51 and this 451 replaces the old 368 - but all the new routes run with stronger terminii and hugely improved services.

Routes 452
The least frequent of the new cross-suburban routes to Ballajura, this one links together withdrawn segments of other routes - grabbing the Whitfords to Alexander Heights section from route 376, the northern Landsdale part of current route 450 and the Marangaroo Drive segment of route 360 - before continuing on to Ballajura Station. It will only run at half the frequency of the 449 and 451, at 20-24 minute frequencies at peak times, every 30 minutes interpeak, and hourly at night (until 10pm) and on weekends, but this is still much better than the hourly weekday service and complete lack of weekend trips currently seen along Gnangara Road and Marangaroo Drive. It is however a downgrade from the 15 minute peak frequency and half hourly Saturday service currently seen on route 450, and it also breaks existing links from north-eastern Landsdale to Warwick and Kingsway shopping centres - although it does improve the operating hours somewhat and establish new connections to Ballajura.

Routes 970 and 970X
Last on this list, we have the long-delayed introduction of a System 21 route :P with the extension of route 970 to Landsdale, replacing the core section of route 376. Sadly, like with the Mount Lawley to Mirrabooka section of route 960, this new extension doesn't qualify for High Frequency status in and of itself (although it does meet the former System 21 standards). However, the 15-minute weekday frequency and half-hourly evening and Sunday services all represent a doubling of today's frequencies, and they're accompanied by the usual improvements to operating hours (both morning and evening) throughout the week and especially on Sundays. Furthermore, the previous through-routed combination of routes 370 and 376 has become a single route 970X - although there's no change here to the number of services. One downgrade though, and it's an unusual one given trends elsewhere on the network, is the loss of a direct connection from western Landsdale to the Yanchep Line. It's arguably of relatively little consequence, given that routes 450 and 452 will cover much of the same catchment area at better frequencies than the current limited service, but it's worth noting nonetheless.

There are also further improvements to the existing Mirrabooka to Perth section of route 970, building on its success over the past few years. On weekdays, the interpeak frequency will be upgraded from 10 to every 7-8 minutes, while there are smaller improvements during the peak-shoulder, contra-peak, and early morning periods. Meanwhile the 15-minute frequency will run later into the evening throughout the week, and weekend trips will also finish later - including a new 12:50am Friday and Saturday late night service.

To be continued......

The big focus one night time services (including on Sundays) certainly has my curiosity piqued; it will be interesting to see how well patronage responds, and how quickly service reductions come about, if at all. Certainly hoping the massive boost in services works out, as it will only serve to encourage greater provision of service elsewhere on the network.

I say again, 452 might be more useful if it starts from Duncraig and runs down Hepburn Avenue between Mitchell Freeway and Wanneroo Road. Also, 449 getting weekend trips is like 280 replacing 294 in Wattle Grove.

Why would the 452 be more useful going from Duncraig? Is it so you can get over the fetish you have for Greenwood to have a bus service, when it's one of the more anti-bus stations we have on the network?

The 443/444 serve Duncraig very well, and thus offers a good connection to the 449-452 routes at either end.
Officially the last person to tag off the 381 - 20/5/16.
Second last person to tag off the last timetabled 16 - 23/08/19.
Last person to tag off a Transdev Joondalup service - 19/1/20.

Because Noranda has 350 passing close by despite not having a bus interchange on site. Also, i have looked at Google maps and it appears to me that St Stephen's School in Duncraig could be a suitable bus terminus.

In my birthplace, every subway station is served by bus stops within walking distance.

It's been a long time since I stopped by Greenwood Station (nine years, in fact), but I think the excuse that it's "bus unfriendly" is a cop-out.

Let's be honest, not one of those bus interchanges plonked on top of a train station, in the median of a freeway, anywhere on the Transperth network, come even remotely close to "bus friendly". Access to and from stations is poor, lacking any sort of meaningful bus priority. Pedestrian movements frequently grind entire interchanges full of buses to a halt, particularly when several school buses arrive concurrently (Murdoch or Bull Creek at about 1520hrs...). Stand space, and layover space is incredibly constrained. Driver amenities, located in a space approximately the size of a broom closet, are piss poor. For over 30yrs, it was accepted that buses at Stirling have had to go back onto Cedric St, and fight traffic, if they need to loop around the station - I'm sure more than a few drivers have lost layover time from that problem over the years. Yet running a bus into Greenwood is somehow too hard? Sorry, I don't buy it.

The "Greenwood issue" could be fixed, quite easily, given the available land particularly east of the freeway (both on the north and south sides of Hepburn Ave), nor should we forget Warnbro started life as a bus stop plonked in the middle of a kiss'n'ride too:

Now whether a bus route down a high-speed road Hepburn Ave is really going to be attractive, is another matter entirely. Anything servicing this segment of road would really need to be coming in from further afield, and benefitting from that direct route, rather than running a local point to point service (like the failed direct service to the Hillary's Boat Harbour).

By end of service of route 955, Swan will no longer serves the Morley Galleria Bus Station as the new route 355 will be operated by Path except the CircleRoute bus services.

Not 100% correct as the 950/950X will still go via Galleria Bus Station which is still operated by Swan in partnership with Path.

With the TransPerth website being upgraded to include the Ellenbrook line, the Armadale & Thornlie lines have been seperated into their own independent lines which makes sense and with that Thornlie line services may skip Beckenham when services resume. Welshpool has been deleted from the system with this update, the rolling stock calculator is also being updated but is currently unavailable. Armadale services will also most likely stop at all stations to Byford
