PTA / Transperth Service Changes 2024

Term 2 service changes: even more additional trips due to increasing patronage, some are due to the Armadale Line closure but others clearly are not. Will be particularly interesting to see the full extent of improvements to route 353.

Also, the Yanchep extension is presumably still a few months away.

April Bus Service Changes
Sun 14 Apr

From Sunday 14 April, routes 83, 337, 338, 353, 447, 467, 482, 483, 484 will undergo time changes.

The following additional changes will occur:

Route 83

The 8.20am trip to Chipping Rd/Catesby St via Floreat Forum and Churchlands Senior Highschool will now depart Perth Busport at 8.15am.

Route 100

An additional weekday trip will depart Canning Bridge Station (Stand 3) at 6.21am. This service will operate normal route to Cannington Station arriving at 6.50am.

Route 206

The following additional weekday trips will operate in response to increasing patronage:

Departing Thornlie Station (Stand 3) at 6.58am, terminating at Murdoch Station at 7.38am
Departing Thornlie Station (Stand 3) at 7.20am, terminating at Murdoch Station at 8.00am
Departing Murdoch University at 3.24pm, Murdoch Station (Stand 9) at 3.33pm, terminating at Thornlie Station at 4.11pm
Departing Murdoch Station (Stand 9) at 4.08pm, terminating at Thornlie Station at 4.42pm.

Route 229

An additional weekday trip will depart Westfield Carousel at 4.20pm. This service will operate normal route to Maddington Central arriving at 5.03pm.

Route 251

Will operate an additional short trip in the afternoon on school days only.

The trip will operate as follows:

Departing Stop 28266 (Mead St adjacent to Salvado Catholic College) at 3.21pm
Via Byford Secondary College, departing Stop 26772 on Gordin Wy at 3.23pm
Via Abernethy Rd to resume normal route, arriving at Armadale Station at 3.43pm.

Route 353

Will operate additional morning, afternoon and off-peak trips on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays, including:
An additional weekday trip will depart Partridge St/Park St at 6.29am, terminating at Bassendean Station at 6.59am
An additional school day trip will depart Bassendean Station at 7.07am via Henley Brook Bus Station at 7.42am, extending to Ellenbrook Secondary College at 7.46am
An additional school day trip to Bassendean Station will depart Henley Brook Bus Station at 8.01am. Passengers who wish to deviate via Kiara college will need to board the trip departing at 8.03am.
Will undergo a minor route change following Drumpellier Dr and Youle-Dean Rd changes.
Will serve new bus stops 29001 and 29002, on Youle-Dean Rd between Mayfield Dr and Marvel Ent.

Some trips will not appear in timetables until a later date. They will be available in Journey Planner and the Transperth App. Passengers are advised to subscribe to My Alerts to stay up to date with further roadworks and disruptions planned in this area.

Route 447

The 2.53pm trip to Warwick Station will now depart Whitfords Station at 3.03pm.

Route 467

The 2.17pm trip to Whitfords Station will now depart Joondalup Station at 2.27pm
The 2.56pm trip to Joondalup Station will now depart Whitfords Station at 3.06pm.

Route 482

The afternoon trip to Butler Station will now depart Butler College at 2.53pm.

Route 483

The afternoon trip to Benenden Av/Villena Pde will now depart Butler College at 2.50pm
The afternoon trip to Butler Station will now depart Butler College at 2.53pm.

Route 484

The afternoon trip to Benenden Av/Villena Pde will now depart Butler College at 2.53pm

Route 515

An additional short weekday trip will depart Jandakot Airport at 3.01pm. This service will operate normal route to Murdoch Station arriving at 3.18pm.

Route 955

Will undergo a minor route change to operate along the new Drumpellier Dr north of Youle-Dean Rd.

The following bus stops will no longer be serviced:

Northbound towards Ellenbrook:
15529 (Drumpellier Dr after Youle-Dean Rd)
28106 (Drumpellier Dr after Woollcott Av)
26668 (Drumpellier Dr before Charlton Wy).

Passengers can travel via Route 353 to alight on Partridge St and Everglades Av or new Stop 29001 (Youle-Dean Rd after Mayfield Ent).

Southbound towards Bassendean
15526 Drumpellier Dr before Youle-Dean Rd.

Passengers can travel via Route 353 to alight on Partridge St and Everglades Av or new Stop 29002 (Youle-Dean Rd after Marvel Ent).

Route 955 will continue to service 26667 (Drumpellier Dr after Charlton Wy) and 28107 (Drumpellier Dr before Woollcott Av). Passengers travelling to Ellenbrook will need to transfer to Route 353 to alight between Youle-Dean Rd and Park St.

Route 998

The following additional weekday trips will operate in response to increasing patronage:

It's not up on the TransRegional updates page yet, but there is a change for the last afternoon buses from Esperance to the suburbs, effective April 2:
All 3 services will be departing 10 mins earlier, so 2.10, 2.18 & 2.20pm
- one assumes this is so the 3 buses can get on to their respective school pickups sooner... in the new school term

I've been on 51 and it seems poorly utilised. Surprised it's getting possible improvements.

From what I've seen it gets good usage during peak periods.

No, Saturdays and school-holiday weekdays have been every 15 minutes for well over a decade at this point, and evenings throughout the week have been 30 minutes until 10 or 11pm for about as long.

Really it's just Sunday daytime services that need to be doubled for the 507 to reach the 900-series standard.

So it turns out that the 353 will double its off-peak and weekend frequency to every 30 minutes. and will run about an hour later into the evening every day of the week. Presumably this is to partially compensate for the northbound 955 running express past most of Brabham due to Metronet works, but it also vindicates the merging of 340 and 353 a while back.

If you zoom in on the map, it clearly shows the 208 going via Liege Street, with the 206 going via Cecil Ave.

It seems there are a lot of changes lately that "will be incorporated into the timetable at a later date". I guess it's reasonable not to be reprinting timetables endlessly for minor changes - but that shouldn't affect the PDF copy online being updated, surely?

It appears that the upgrades to the Guildford Rd services have been brought forward, to operate from the completion of the bus link road at Bayswater as opposed to waiting for the Ellenbrok Line to open - however, they still seem set to open the Ellenbrook line "later this year."

To be fair I don't imagine the routes those buses go down are that well traveled. The Maylands part is two an hour by the look of it (42 and 43), so the furthest you can really get away from the nearest train station without at least hourly bus service is a 30 minute walk on Google Maps around Ashfield/Basso area. And Google Maps is notoriously slow with their walking speed.

Not sure... The few 42s I've been on outside of peak hour or leading into it have been exceptionally busy, carrying seated loads out of the city, and the bulk of passengers hopping off once the bus left Guildford Road. While having the 43 added into the mix doesn't exactly simplify matters, it will at least double the daytime service to the Peninsula. A good start.

I was hoping that perhaps a bit more effort might've been put into late-night services on the 40 and 42 to and from the City, given there are so many other feeders in the low-density, sprawling suburbs, that are both substantially longer (in terms of time, and distance travelled) with superior late night service; that is, last buses, in both directions around 10-11pm.

Admittedly, the train service is now substantially more frequent, with service to improve again within the next year or so with the Ellenbrook line opening; knowing a train will never run less than every 10mins (unless something drastic is done to the timetable) will certainly make a lengthy walk more tolerable. Then again, perhaps the bus plugs enough gaps in coverage (particularly South and East of Maylands) better service could be justified outside of peak?

Are the loadings on the four Guildford Rd services so heavy that it is necessary to run a combined frequency of five minutes from the City, when this has evidently been to the detriment of late night, and weekend service levels, or is this service level designed to satisfy some compulsion, even obsession, towards a "neat" timetable or minimum service KPI?

A few scattered thoughts and observations on all this:

The split between 42 and 43 reminds me (and not in a good way) of what we had in the 80s and 90s with routes like the 67/69, 208/209, 261/267 etc. where different numbers were used to indicate common variations. In this case I believe it's because residents of Central Av/East St were quite vocal about losing their direct bus route (never mind that the alternatives are just a short walk away.) Hopefully over time one of the two routes will be consistently busier than the other and the timetable can be adjusted to match.

I'm pleasantly surprised they didn't split the 40 in two at Bayswater, like the Aubin Grove feeders for example. It does lose the short-workings between Bayswater and Morley (that were originally planned to increase), but gains some inbound short-workings between Bayswater and Perth.

Route 41 has increased to a half-hourly contra-peak service, to capitalise on the Bayswater interchange and (at least somewhat) help with non-CBD-bound journeys. This is a particular improvement over the single outbound trip that currently runs earlier than 8:30am. It also increases the Guildford Road frequency to 10 minutes inbound during the afternoon peak.

Sunday evening trips run slightly later on route 40, and significantly later on the 41, 42 and 45, while early morning trips are similarly boosted. This follows trends in recent years elsewhere on the network, and is particularly notable since this corridor was one of the last to use the old core times where nothing ran before 10am or after 7:30pm. It's strange though that the last Sunday trip along Guildford Road east of Maylands is an inbound one (a short-working 40).

The new 46 does a good job of co-ordinating with the 40 in the middle of the day, but is a bit of a mess at peak times and is also really infrequent. It's also reminiscent of a section of the old route 343 (and 345 before it) that was lost when that route was shortened nearly 20 years ago. Also of note, I think this is the first time I've officially seen the Ellenbrook railway referred to simply as "Ellenbrook Line" (rather than Morley-Ellenbrook).

Apart from a expected handful of extra peak-direction trips, mostly in the shoulders, route 980 will now operate every 12 minutes towards Perth in the afternoon peak (improved from 15). It will also run an additional morning trip to Morley at 8:05am to plug a 20-minute gap, and the 6:05am early morning trip towards Morley will be replaced by two trips at 5:50 and 6:20am.

Also note that the Morley-Bayswater section of the 48 saw a half-hourly service Monday to Saturday when it was shadowed by the short-lived route 348 (in 2014-15). I reckon it being cut back at a time when service expansion funding was still available speaks volumes. Being a bit of a milk-run route through a relatively small catchment area that's also served by better routes like the 345, 950, CircleRoute and even 955 certainly wouldn't help.

Term 3 service changes: an extended railway line

Introducing your new Yanchep Line!

From Monday 15 July, the Joondalup Line is being renamed the Yanchep Line.

With new stations at Yanchep, Eglinton and Alkimos, the Yanchep Line not only connects the northern suburbs with the CBD but will connect the coastline with the wider Transperth network.

In addition to the launch of the new stations, we'll also be introducing a number of new bus services and making changes to existing services.
