L1 Dulwich Hill Line full and partial closures
Tuesday 21 March 2023
From Saturday 1 to Wednesday 12 April, L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services will not run at times due to major trackwork and maintenance works, including for Eddy Avenue underbridge major refurbishment and the Harbourside Shopping Centre redevelopment in Darling Harbour.
From 6am Saturday 1 to 11pm Sunday 2 April:
Buses will replace all L1 light rail services between Central Grand Concourse and Dulwich Hill.
No L1 light rail services will run.
Important: due to unavoidable road closures for the Harbourside Shopping Centre demolition work, replacement buses will be travelling via a detoured route in the Pyrmont area, extending your replacement bus journey considerably.
From 6am Monday 3 to 11pm Wednesday 12 April:
L1 light rail replacement bus services will run partially between Central Grand Concourse and The Star via Convention.
L1 light rail services will resume running between Convention and Dulwich Hill as per normal frequency.
Allow plenty of extra travel time and follow the yellow directional signs to the nearby replacement bus stop locations.
L1 light rail replacement bus services will run from 6am to 11pm daily (midnight on Friday) at the following frequency, subject to road traffic:
From 6am to 8am: every 15 to 20 min,
From 8am to 7pm: every 10 to 15 min,
From 7pm to 11pm: every 15 to 20 min.
Please note:
Replacement buses will not stop at the following locations:
Capitol Square (towards Central and Dulwich Hill or Convention/The Star) – Walk from Central Station to Capitol Square (approx. 5 minute walk), or use the alternative stop for Central Grand Concourse (Central Station, Coach Terminal Western Forecourt Bus Bay 4) (approx. 7 minute walk),
Exhibition Centre (towards Dulwich Hill or Convention/The Star) – Use the alternative stop at Convention (approx. 7 minute walk),
Pyrmont Bay (towards Central and Dulwich Hill or Convention/The Star) – Use the alternative stop at The Star (approx. 5 minute walk).
When travelling between Central Station, Darling Harbour and Pyrmont, walking if able to will be an alternative transport option, due to increased road traffic.
Due to bus drivers shortages that may impact light rail replacement bus services, some local regular bus and train services might also be an alternative transport option between major stops.
Most replacement buses will be accessible. If a replacement bus is not accessible, please wait for the next replacement bus service.
A standard light rail fare applies on-board light rail replacement buses. Replacement bus services are Opal or contactless payment enabled. You must tap on when boarding a replacement bus and tap off before alighting. Opal readers are located onboard all replacement buses.
L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford lines light rail services will continue to run as per normal schedule.
Full L1 light rail services between Central Grand Concourse and Dulwich Hill will resume from 6am Thursday 13 April.
Allow extra travel time and use the Trip Planner or check travel alerts to see if your travel is affected.

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
Travelled on L1 just now about halfway across the line, on a Citadis, and saw three other Citadis’ going the opposite direction on board; seems like a lot. I guess Transdev must have gotten comfortable with the peace of mind the additional trams have given them

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
That's a well designed replacement bus timetable... same running time at 6am and midday. OTR obviously isn't a priority, nor is providing customers with realistic journey times, so they can make informed decisions.
Good riddens to Westbus...
Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
It seems like the closure of Darling Drive to remove the pedestrian walkway was not in effect today. However the real pig in the replacement bus timetable is the route to Darling Drive. We went: Central western concourse - down the colonnade, right Hay St, left Elizabeth St, left Goulburn St, continue Pier St, left Harris St, left Ultimo Rd, left Darling Dr. I know the closure of George St to most traffic has limited options but surely there's a better way than this - thoughts ?
Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
There are a couple of other alternatives, but they too go around the houses. That route is probably the most direct, the recent change of the turn off from the colonnade into Hay Street to right turn only has added a couple of more sets of lights.
Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
Power outage on the L1 with dead trams stabled across the line.

A few years ago, the buses followed the tram line, starting at the Colonnade, down the ramp and along Hay St to Darling Drive.jpp42 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 4:35 pm It seems like the closure of Darling Drive to remove the pedestrian walkway was not in effect today. I believe there’s significant work being done to the colonnade anpproaches itself. I’ve recently seen the bridge over Eddy Ave completely covered in hoardings for maintenance.

This was in November last year, more work was done a couple of weeks ago. Looks like maintenance of the sandstone pillars.

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
That was one of the thrills of the light rail opening there was reinstatement of tram tracks over that bridge and into the colonnade where the original system went. Unfortunately that was the extent of it.

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
Really, it's just 2min extra wait outside peak times. It's been years since I used the Central to the Star service during the morning peak- do these services still squish people in?

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
It's probably more about the extra capacity than waiting times.

Oh yeah, the L1 is packed. The extra 4 trams the Govt bought won't be enough. They'll need moreboxythingy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 12:16 am Really, it's just 2min extra wait outside peak times. Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
The next step before that can happen is to upgrade the capacity of the line and rectify the silly mistakes they made when they built it - notably the fact that Central has the capacity to turn a tram around every 30 seconds, while Dulwich Hill can only turn one around every 4-5 minutes. In theory, some could reverse at Lilyfield, but I'm not sure that they have the capability to do that like clockwork.

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations
It's like they want car dependence to remain for the oil companies and toll road barons. A fine balance between making it work adequately enough for political points but not too attractive that it makes too many leave the car at home or even do away with it.
It's been operating that way since our magnificent tram system was abolished by criminals in the 40s.
The massive cost blow out of L2/3 is a wonderful device to prevent more lines being built, while being able to say we have trams again, all's well. The NSW sausage machine continues as planned.
