Re: 2023 NSW Election
I notice that public transport advocate and former City Council councillor, Julie Walton, is listed on the ticket of "Elizabeth Farrelly Independents" on the voting paper for the Upper House.

From SMH:

Maybe someone can identify it:Dominic Perrottet took a leaf out of the Malcolm Turnbull election campaign book on Thursday, wrapping up at lunchtime and letting everyone go home early.
The Premier undertook a brief street walk in Eastwood at midday, speaking to a few shopkeepers in the seat of Ryde, where the incumbent Liberal MP Victor Dominello is retiring, before calling it a day.

Unfortunately for the travelling press pack, the campaign bus that was supposed to take them back to Parliament House broke down, and they were left waiting nearly two hours on the side of the road in Eastwood for a replacement vehicle to arrive.

I guess the general messaging out of this is that buses of all types are unreliable.

Guess that makes the score one all? Moral of the story is don't laugh too much at your opposition's misfortune less you suffer the same fate.

We had a guy who was banned from our buses so he used to put a stick in the fan belt when a bus would stop.

The LNP driver was interviewed on Ch 9, this bus had a "flat battery" too.

Yes we are lucky and even though I worry about the other mob opening the metro if the house prices crash then the banks may be next.

Re: 2023 NSW Election
Any big transport decisions people keeping an eye on? For me, it's Labor promising to keep the Freshwater class although who knows whether they will keep their promise. Despite the populist rhetoric, I don't think they will unwind the franchising of the former STA regions. Suspect the Metro cancellations they've announced were always going to happen for funding reasons anyway.
So from a gunzel perspective, this vote is all about the Freshies. I've voted Greens because I know my old mate Pig Iron Bob will approve.

Re: 2023 NSW Election
They might launch an "investigation" and the best they'll come up with is "it has to wait until the contracts expire" ... For the former STA regions, that's several years, another two or three election cycles away - so very easy to kick the can down the road while looking like you're doing something.

Re: 2023 NSW Election
I agree except that ex STA region 6 is only just over 3 years away expiring 30 June 2026 which is within the next election cycle. So that could be an opportunity to start the reversal cycle. But at the time it would depend what the public opinion on this would be so close to the election. Another option would be to continue the contract for 12 months until after the election.

Re: 2023 NSW Election
All the other mainland states are currently Labor, and they don't seem to have any problems with similar bus operating schemes.

Re: 2023 NSW Election
The South Australian Labor party seems to (at least where contracting of trams and trains is concerned), but whether that just turns out to be politicians speaking before thinking, we are yet to see.
Re: 2023 NSW Election
Other states also don't have an issue with driver only trains, or opening the rear door on buses.
But NSW is different.
Suspect there will be some karma in the next six months as Labor grapples with how to fund and get the NIFs on track and deals with completing the CSW Metro.

Is it true that the STA weren't allowed to place a bid for contracts in the tendering process during the 2012 contract negotiations for the 8 open tender contractsMerc1107 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 11:33 amThey might launch an "investigation" and the best they'll come up with is "it has to wait until the contracts expire" ... Re: 2023 NSW Election
Yes that is true - as a Government owned entity, the Government could make such a decision.
Actually it was in 2013.

Re: 2023 NSW Election
STA were directed awarded the contracts for regions 6, 7, 8 & 9 in 2013 based on STA demonstrating cost savings. This is when ‘route optimisation’ occurred across all regions and depots plus there was a small operational restructure behind the scenes to also drive down costs.
In early 2018 STA regions 7, 8 & 9 were given a 3 x year contact which was an indication that franchising was not far off the horizon. Region 6 is omitted as at this stage Region 6 was already in the process of franchising with the operator (Transit Systems) announced in February 2018.
STA could not tender for any regions since the first announcement of franchising was made in May 2017. The state government cannot say ‘we no longer want to directly operate bus services’ and also at the same time say ‘we want to put in a tender to directly operate bus services’. STA and Sydney Trains for example are essentially brand names controlled by TfNSW, there is a lot of operational and personnel cross over between various departments across the transport ‘cluster’ as it is known as. Transport Shared Services comes into the picture here although that is another story.

I've been calling that Labor would win since before Berejiklian stepped down but I didn't think it would be by this much

The election wasn't Labor's to win but rather, Perrotet's to lose.

I would like to be a fly on the wall at KEOILIS DOWNER NEWCASTLE the management there knowing that the contract won’t be renewed, and what time there is left will go quickly enough, and the drivers walking into work this morning have probably got a spring in their step, and quite rightly so.

The current contract runs for the whole life of this government.HunterLine5 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 6:50 am I would like to be a fly on the wall at KEOILIS DOWNER NEWCASTLE the management there knowing that the contract won’t be renewed, and what time there is left will go quickly enough, and the drivers walking into work this morning have probably got a spring in their step, and quite rightly so.
