When were bus conductors last used?

So in Melbourne, we had tram conductors until 1998 but we have not had bus conductors since much earlier. When were they last used in Oceania?

Melbourne bus conductors disappeared by about 1979-80. Sydney's on board conductors finished in 1980 though they maintained some roving and stop based ticket sellers for a few years afterward - the last of these ended at Newcastle in 1984.

Similar or earlier. The change from 2 to 1 person operation moved at varying speeds and times through the 60s and 70s in different cities/ countries. The use of mechanical and later electronic ticket machines and systems, along with the withdrawal of rear platform deckers where they were used, basically rendered the role redundant.

I’m pretty sure the STA were still using static conductors until recent years.

They were a regular sight at Chalmers St Central Station for football/cricket fixtures at Moore Park probably as recently as the introduction of Opal, when cash fares were abolished.

Apparently there was also a static conductor at Watson St Neutral Bay each weekday morning. This is a high volume bus stop on Military Road, and is the final stop before buses hit the Warringah freeway and Harbour Bridge into Wynyard.

In the afternoon, there was also a conductor at Wynyard for the return trips. I imagine it was probably a broken shift done by the same employee.

There may well have also been one at Eddy Ave Central Station each morning to cope with the crowds of uni students coming off the the trains and going to UNSW at Kensington.

Again, with Opal these would have become redundant.

Just like the Trailerbuses they wanted to get rid of the conductor by putting the door next to the driver.

I went on a Routemaster for a year to school and there was never an accident with the open rear platform.

I think it was at a time when people were using cars more so profits fell on buses.
