The first digit is obscured behind the frame; while it may look like 127, there are at least two references above to the service being 227.

Re: Briens Bus Service
I am sure the name was Marrickville Bus Lines. Their coaches operated as MBL Coaches.busmadrod wrote: January 1979 transferred to BJ (Ben) Rachwal, company named changed back to Marrickville Bus Service

Also I'm sure the change from 222 to 448 was much later than 1979. Probably 1987 when other services in the area were renumbered.

Re: Briens Bus Service
Hi all, just letting you know that I was the driver of Brien's Bus Service on their single route at the time, Newtown to White Bay via Camperdown and Annandale, in 1987. I did the job for one year and one week. A short route, but it included some of the busiest traffic in Sydney's inner city, including Parramatta Road, The Crescent and a little bit of Victoria Road. It was running on the same timetable set, I think, in the 1930s, before we had massive traffic levels. It was impossible to keep to timetable in the morning peak time, so I'd have to abandon a run in the morning every day to avoid being late the whole day. The bus was ancient, the destination board read 'White Bay' even when it was heading back to Newtown, and half the bus stops were missing, unreplaced. Hardly anyone used the bus because Newtown was no longer full of workers and White Bay was no longer full of jobs, and the three cinemas which used to exist in Johnson Street, Annandale, were gone. There was just no viability in the route any more. The owner at the time, who inherited it from his father (who in turn inherited it from HIS father) was losing $500 a week on that run. He only continued running it because he had a charter bus, and to retain his licence to operate that charter bus he also had to run a route bus. It was really quite dispiriting to keep trying to keep to an impossible timetable when so few people were actually using it. Charlie.

He only continued running it because he had a charter bus, and to retain his licence to operate that charter bus he also had to run a route bus. It was really quite dispiriting to keep trying to keep to an impossible timetable when so few people were actually using it. By the way, the bus in the last picture, the white one, started to burn while on route. The bus driver at the time, an enormously fat man, ran away from the bus and let it burn. He was sacked for that, which, I learned later, is how I got the job. Charlie.
