Requirements for motorhome to travel Australia

Post by Darren12 »

Hi everyone, I have a 86 Scania K112 3 axle coach which I am building into motorhome. It has a under coach exhaust and I am wondering to travel around Australia does it have to have a exhaust running up through roof?

Also wondering if replacing headlights with led headlights is legal?

Still on hunt for a workshop manual also.
Thanks in advance.
Darren.

Hi Darren,
NHVR oversees the state regs for requirements. A low exhaust is legal, it doesnt have to go through the bodywork and exit high like it used to.
If you are replacing headlights they must have ADR approval

Cheers

From memory, the high exhaust was only mandatory for vehicles newly registered in NSW in the 1990s which didn't meet certain (Euro 2 or 3?) emission standards.

Next question I have 2 double sets of seats that are from original setup of coach that do not have seatbelts. Can I use those seats without belts or am I required to replace with seats with belts?
Thanks Darren

My understanding is, all seats must have seat belts, however.

Example, you have 7 seats, and 4 passengers, as long as 4 seats have the legally approved seat belts then this is legal.

I am currently , stripping out my bus to convert so going through same process…. I only have a drivers seat remaining.

Usually, If the vehicle was not fitted with belts when first registered, it should not need them now. ADRs are not retrospective.

I don't think a change of use would negate this requirement, but you might check with your local registration authority.

If you do fit new seats with belts, they will have to comply with the latest Australian Standards. A 1986 bus would probably have not the required floor strength to support them. I would suggest talking to an automotive engineer.

As far as I can remember, in the 1990s, newly registered vehicles in NSW were required to have a high exhaust only if they didn't meet certain emission standards (Euro 2 or 3?).

I just has a 1992 Volvo B10M bus certified - the seats do not need belts.
And fitting seats with belts would have cost me about $10,000 to get certified.

Anyone want to buy 8 Mercedes seats with belts?
