Least frequent bus service in Australia or New Zealand

Post by Myrtone »

What is the least frequent bus service in Australia or in New Zealand, depending on which is less frequent?

Would imagine some of the "X times per week" coach services between some towns would probably best fit the bill.

I don't see what could be unclear about that. What can be unclear about "X times per week" can be described by this example; twice a day, 6 days a week is 12 times per week.

Adelaide Metro route 850 (Macclesfield-Meadows-Echunga-Aldgate) runs once a day each way on weekdays (five times a week), plus an additional outbound service on school days.

Route 900 serves Virginia twice each weekday day each way: Elizabeth-Virginia-Salisbury twice in the morning and Salisbury-Virginia-Elizabeth twice in the late afternoon. These are the only Adelaide Metro buses to service that town and the nearby industrial areas.

There are several outback services in the NT that only run twice a month.

Sydney has a couple of "special event" routes that only operate one day per year.

And that raises the question of how frequent they are on the days they operate.

Would depend on location and size of the event but many state have such things. Though not sure if fair count them since not regular routes all year round

Yes, there might be a number of services on the one day depending on the loadings.

But where do you demarcate between "not regular" and "Infrequent"? In Sydney, these routes are given numbers.

Some councils and community groups operate defined "services" for disadvantaged residents. Some could be as infrequent as once or twice a month, with different areas serviced on rotation.

Southlink routes HL1, HL2, 836, 856, and 857 all operate once a week, less frequent than both mentioned. All of them bar the 836 are one-way routes too. Not Adelaide Metro as such, but use Southlink-owned Adelaide Metro liveried buses
First person on 822, 865 (2016 re-route).
Last person on 164, 867, 868

Route 697F in Melbourne is a good contender for an outer urban service, which provides a once weekly direct service on Thursdays only from Belgrave Station to Westfield Fountain Gate, taking 25 minutes.

It actually would be quite a useful service if it ran more often, as the fastest alternative routings the journey planner suggests for days/times when it doesn't run take around 1hr 50 mins.

Those using all these very infrequent bus services would all need to know when to turn up at the stops they serve.

If people know when to turn up at the stops they serve, then they will not have to wait for even any amount close to 6 days 23 hours and 59 minutes. People using those buses will know when to turn up at a bus stop if they know when the next bus in their intended direction of travel is due to depart. If they know the next bus is due in 50 minutes, they know to turn up within the next 50 minutes.

In Perth, one of the least frequent services would be Route 253 which runs from Jarrahdale to Armadale. Two services in each direction on weekdays and one on Saturday - no Sunday/Public holiday service.

In Albury/Wodonga, for the town buses, I'd say the B to Baranduda is the least frequent service, with only one service every two hours or so with about 7 services. For the services that go out of town, the bus to Tallangatta is the least frequent service with only one service to and from Tallangatta each friday.
