And just like that, State Transit was no more.
No more government run buses in NSW
But, the era of the mega private company operating Government Contracted buses in NSW is only just beginning!

Think that began a while ago
Re: STA Observations 2021-2022 - Final Memories?
Operational contracting of state public transport services in Australia began nearly 30 years ago for buses, 70 years ago for ferries and 20 or so years ago for trains. Get up with the latest news man!gilberations wrote: ↑Wed Apr 06, 2022 1:54 am And just like that, State Transit was no more.

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Multi-national transport companies began operating bus services under contract to the NSW government in the mid-1990s when Connex and National Express purchased Southtrans and Westbus. Although with TfNSW allowing bidders to bundle regions together in the next tender round, we may well see the cessation of the last of the smaller, family operated operators, Interline, Punchbowl etc.
The initial era of private companies operating ferry services came to and end in the early 1970s when the state government was forced to take the services over after Brambles threaten to withdraw them and operated them directly for another 25-30 years. Trains began in Victoria in the mid-1990s, but it was a disaster and the government ended up taking it back.

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Private contract operation of government ferry services has a long history dating back to the 19th century, usually in the form of contractors operating government punts. But the major period of operational contracting for NSW ferries began in 1951 when the NSW government acquired the fleet and assets of Sydney Ferries Ltd. A government agency, the Sydney Harbour Transport Board, was established as nominal owner of the ferries and assets, but a contract was given to the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Co to operate the ferries, which it did until December 1974 when the government took over operation and maintenance of the ferries itself following advice from the PJMS Co that it would scale down the operation, desiring to withdraw altogether. The government also at the same time took over the fleet and operational assets of the PJMS Co. and continued to operate and maintain the inner harbour and Manly ferries until a new operational contract was let, to Transdev Sydney Ferries, in 2012.
I'm always amused when there is a campaign against "privatisation of the ferries" when they were privately operated for 144 years until 1974 and now they're privately operated again. The period of government operation lasted 38 years. The period of ownership of vessels and assets by government has, however, lasted 72 years since 1951 (or 1974 for the Manly ferries). Sydney's ferry operations are now heading towards the 200 year mark, of which the period of government ownership of most assets accounts for about 1/3 of that time and increasing as a proportion; government operation for less than 1/4 of that time and diminishing.

Because people are generally cynical of a government’s motives for privatising. Often it is to put distance between it and a potential problems. Other times things are sold way below their true value.

Don't forget that Labor stalwarts and unions are pushing the line that the government is SELLING the buses, ferries and maybe the trains.

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Anyone know if all of the Ex Sta B10BLEs are now stored at Port Botany? They appear to be hard to see at Penrith Busways lately..
Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
So now the STA is gone, my questions are:
1. Has the Radio room gone too or does it still operate?
2. STA Leichhardt - Fleet operations is this area been absorbed into TSA Leichhardt Depot?
3. STA administration, I suppose these employees either have been made redundant or moved into other roles within TFNSW?

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Busways has been painting them into the Busways White livery. I don't know if any buses are still at Port Botany, as Busways should be in possession of all the B10s they are taking and the remainder of buses stored at Port Botany (both B10s and L113s) were to be moved to Leichhardt.Stonesourscotty wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 3:25 pm Anyone know if all of the Ex Sta B10BLEs are now stored at Port Botany? I would presume that there is no longer a STA Radio Room, but i'm not sure of what has happened to their former staff. AMD at Leichhardt and the Admin staff will remain with STA until STA is dissolved at the end of financial year.Ben_Daui wrote: ↑Tue Apr 19, 2022 11:02 am So now the STA is gone, my questions are:

IIRC, the STA Radio Room was integrated into the Traffic Management Centre at Redfern. How does it work now that the private radio rooms are (presumably) scattered across the suburbs?

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Would there be any reasons a "common radio room" couldn't be created for all contractors, to help facilitate movement of information in case of major disruptive events?
Otherwise I'd assume the larger operators are busy preparing to deploy (if they haven't already) a central control - if that's operationally efficient now that the STA is defunct. There are pros and cons, depending on the management structure it can cause a lot of double-handling, miscommunication and thus disruption for passengers.

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
As part of the contracting, each region had to setup a 24 hour control room.
Keolis Downer have set up OCC at Brookvale depot.
Transdev John Holland have a 24hr OCC at Randwick depot.
Busways have an OCC but I am not sure which depot it is located at.

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Busways already have an OCC at their Head Office in Pymble serving their other regions. I'd imagine R7 was integrated into it.
Good riddens to Westbus...
Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
Most of the remaining STA staff are working at STA AMD Leichhardt to complete various duties regarding the impending dissolution of STA and it’s last annual report. Many staff relocated to this location earlier this year.
There have been major changes regarding the former STA Sydney CBD mobile supervisor ‘trucks’ and staff that are based at Leichhardt AMD. TfNSW has placed the control of the AMD based vehicles and staff with the TMC.
Some changes:
- OPS25 has been withdrawn.
- Radio call signs have been changed. C(City)25, OPS80 & OPS100. Each prefix replaced by ‘Alpha’ to match TfNSW (ex RMS, ex RTA) radio call signs.
- One line of work removed.
- Sunday shift for the former C25 has been removed.
- No change to the AM shift.
- PM shift will commence 1 x hour earlier, 1 x hour cross over with the AM shift.
Region 7 Busways North West bus radio coverage has been integrated into the OCC at Busways Group head office at Pymble.
STA NCC staff transition.
1 x STA NCC staff member transitioned to Region 7.
3 x x STA NCC staff members transitioned to Region 8.
4 x STA NCC staff members transitioned to Region 9.
2 x STA NCC staff member transitioned to TMC.

Re: STA Observations 2021-2022
That's great to hear Stu, that many if not all of the often overlooked/forgotten about STA NCC staff found homes elsewhere.
It's interesting to note that the TMC has retained City25. I wonder what they have them doing!

I can think of two. Most likely the Bus And Truck Museum sorry Green and Cream Decker Museum.
NSW, the state that embraces mediocrity.

Isn't it funny to still see State Transit number plates on the now privately managed fleet?
