[Apr-Jun 2022] SA Transport observations

Post by The Phonj »

April is here, Daylight Saving has almost finished and the festival, fringe and other events of March are well behind us now.

Daylight savings finishes this Sunday, don't forget to put your clocks back 1 hour (for those that don't automatically change).

MAN NL202's continue to be retired when they become of age. While there is a little while to go, be sure to get your rides and photos of them before they all go.

Labor won the recent state election, with promises to fix the health system, and return the trains and trams into government hands. Time will tell what actually happens.

Gawler line electrification continues, with free travel on Gawler substitute buses commencing on Monday 2 April until trains resume, this will happen by 30 June. Test trains have been seen running on the line, with both diesel and electric railcars.

Please post your South Australian transport observations here that wouldn't seem to warrant their own thread.

Accident tonight on the corner of Arndale St and Gray st Kilkenny (near salvos and Hoyts) around 5pm involving 1225 (I think) and a city bound 251. Looked like everyone was ok, no emergency services when I went past, front of 1225 looked to have a fair bit of cosmetic damage, couldn’t see the side of the other bus. Have a pic but not sure how to post it.

After all these years Old Reynella Bus Interchange is finally getting upgrades.

Old Reynella Interchange
About the project

The South Australian Government has committed $2 million to upgrading amenities at the Old Reynella Interchange. The upgrade aims to improve the customer experience and increase patronage on the Adelaide Metro bus network.

Upgrades to the Old Reynella interchange will include the installation of new:

bus platform shelters;
platform bins;
bus drivers’ amenity building;
wayfinding and passenger information signage;
MetroCARD ticket recharge machine;
real time digital passenger information;
Tactile Ground Surface Indicators to assist the visually impaired; and
secure bike cage for MetroCARD holders.
In addition, improvements to landscaping and irrigation, pedestrian pathway access and platform and pathway lighting and CCTV will also be undertaken.

Site investigation works recently commenced and upgrade works will begin after these investigation works are complete. The project is expected to be complete mid-2022, weather permitting. Works will generally be undertaken during the day Monday to Friday.

There was 60-70 min delays on some City bound O-Bahn services yesterday morning. 1106 broke down on a 546X not too far out from TTP and several buses were stuck on that section of track behind it.
Not sure of the exact issue but they managed to eventually get the bus to Paradise where a replacement bus took over.

70 mins... and to think that the oBahn was designed with buses that had towbar attachments to push or pull disabled vehicles, and had Dumbo also available to retrieve. Very sad that what was once a well thought out operation has been let lapse to such a state.

I thought they still had Dumbo - at least that's what I was told by an O-Bahn alumni.

Even if they do, you still have to get to the track from the depot, then work towards the bus, and make the necessary preparations for towing. There's all the OH&S considerations among that in today's world, too.

Dumbo is still at St Agnes and gets used when needed to rescue breakdowns on the track.

Dumbo was sitting at Paradise on standby. Not sure if they were able to get 1106 back to Depot by itself

5 mins for the driver to try to rectify the issue
5 mins to organise workshop staff
5 mins to start Dumbo up
20 mins to get to Paradise via road
5 mins to organise controlling cabin, set guidewheels, get track clearance
10 mins to travel back along the track from Paradise to almost TTP
5 mins mechanic diagnostic to see if bus can move on own power
5-10 mins to connect Dumbo to disabled bus
10 mins towing at low speed to next interchange
5 mins to clear track of other disabled buses

There's your 70 minutes easily.

If the breakdown had have occurred at the same location on the down track, you'd save around 30 minutes just in travel time.

On Monday 30th May 2022 Torrens Transit MAN NL202 215 was involved in a MVA on Coventry Road in Smithfield Plains. Front damage mainly from what I saw.

What I think is an Iveco has been in the rear yard of Big Chief for a few weeks - viewable from the road from Waterloo Corner Road to the Northern Expressway and St Kilda. Seems strange to have a reasonably modern bus out of service just sitting there.

Can someone confirm I've heard a rumour that Edinburgh North have retired the majority of its Man NL 202 fleet if so does anyone know which ones are still in service?

With all these retirements of NL 202s does anyone know who I have to speak to to purchase one for preservation? my favourite one was Lonsdale depot 2205 when working there and I would do anything to own that bus

NL202's seem to be appearing regularly on the Pickles Auctions website, might pay to keep an eye out there.
