[Jan-Mar 2022] SA Transport observations

Post by The Phonj »

A New Year is upon us; Congratulations!! We all made it through the old one :D

Reviewing 2021.....
After having most of the year without retirements, The first NL202 diesels were retired at the end of the year; with R1333 and R1334 both being retired at the end of November. I wonder what their fates will be.
Bustech/Scania rigids, both hybrid and pure diesel were delivered through the course of the year. A Bustech/Scania artic was built and tested on the O-Bahn, but hasn't entered traffic yet.
Gawler railway line substitutes continued through the entirety of 2021, with trains currently expected to resume in "early 2022". A variety of private operators were used, to supplement services provided by Torrens Transit. Predominantly Kanga/Farnham but also Adelaide Coachlines, Grant's, A1 Tour and Charter, Buses R Us, Star Bus and Sealink have been spotted from time to time.
Keolis Downer commenced operation of Adelaide's heavy rail network in January 2021.
Works on the Regency Rd bridge for the North-South Motorway (M2) were completed and the motorway opened in March 2021. The remaining section is between the Torrens River and Darlington, for which a mixture of tunnels and under-cut motorway (similar to Torrens to Torrens) are proposed.

COVID-19 continued with the discovery of new variants and the vaccination of a majority of the population against the disease. Changing border closures, lockdowns and other restrictions kept everybody on their toes over 2021.

With reduced restrictions, it'll the beginning of the "event season" as well. While the Adelaide 500 motor race has been cancelled, and the Tour Down Under has been replaced with a "Festival of Cycling", the Fringe and Adelaide Festival look set to continue this year.

Please post your South Australian transport observations here that wouldn't seem to warrant their own thread.

I hope that all have a prosperous and happy new year for this 2022!

Several train services were cancelled yesterday and today because of COVID-related staff shortages.

A stop closure isn’t usually noteworthy particularly, but this one is a real sign of the times I think.
Due to Covid testing in the area and cars queuing, buses are unable to access bus stops Z1 or 1 Anzac Highway or Stop 1B Greenhill Rd from 7am -9pm until further notice.

Passengers using Stop Z1 go to J1 West Terrace.

Passengers using Stop 1 go to stop 2 Anzac Highway,

Passengers using Stop 1B ( 580 services only ) go to 1C Greenhill Rd

Busways Lonsdale have received a Hybrid Scania. My guess this might be numbered 2603 or a new number sequence?

I always like how chanel 7 always has to beat up the driver or "he was left red faced" who knows what really happened did he have a medical episode? Did someone stop Infront of him? Or did he really just make a mistake? Who knows but wish the media would stop automatically blaming the driver

The comments are just as bad, apparently every TT driver is on a cheap visa (so the classic FB racism) and has negative 1 billion hours of experience with a motor vehicle.

Private operators could or should try suing the media for defamation. Not that it stops the issue... But could quell it, perhaps.

The comments about immigrants is just not on. If the public perceive bus drivers to be unhelpful, unprofessional and lousy at driving - the hard questions must be asked, namely, why are these types (supposedly) so prevalent in the industry? Is it an issue with the candidates, training or employers in the industry?

It's a failure of a lot of people to understand the difficulty of even entry level jobs such as a supermarket worker and take for granted the role that transport workers have in our society. It's also incredibly easy to lay blame on things outside the control of the driver if you don't care to find another explanation. In Hobart I overhead several high school students complaining about the driver "being bad at driving" whenever the bus would jolt on a up/down shift like our hybrids tend to.

Personally I don't think theres a culture issue in the industry or any other industry that causes these public relations issues, I don't blame a driver for being a bit fed up if they're never acknowledged outside "aha my metrocard is out can i just get to the city mate? (waits half a second) yeah cheers"

Thanks I'm guessing the S at the end of the fleet number stands for SERVICE bus as R is a railbus?

Do Newton have AdBlue facilities? I'm not sure they do.

February 2022 temp rail line closures:
To enable finishing works for the Gawler Rail Electrification Project, there will be line closures and test trains on the weekends of 12-13 February and 18-20 February.
(Details showing currently on the link suggests that outer harbour and Grange lines are closed 21st Feb)

Further details and bustitute timetables are still to be confirmed/uploaded.
