As most of us do not know much more than Pauline Hanson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYF08jJi9Hg
I thought I would list what I have found.
Advantage Nuclear----------it is faster.
Advantage Diesel------------it is harder to find.
Disadvantage Nuclear------ we have no nuclear industry, many Aussie ports would not welcome it, sends out a heat signal with cooling water.
Disadvantage Diesel-------- slower.

Re: Submarines
Diesel subs are quite noisy compared to nucs and therefore far easier for other quieter subs to track and kill.

Re: Submarines
In what I read their advantage is because they are harder to find.

Re: Submarines
Diesel powered submarines are actually "hybrids", propelled by batteries. In "stealth mode" there would be no engine noise, but they have to surface to recharge.
Are there still diesel submarines?
The diesel submarines of today are not those of the days of the USS Nautilus. They operate much more quietly on new-generation diesel engines with advanced batteries. AIP technology has improved significantly the stealth performance of a new generation of submarines at a fraction of the cost of a nuclear-powered boat.

Re: Submarines
A nuc boat will still kill a diesel every time, especially when surfacing. Unfortunately it will take ww3 to properly demonstrate this.

Re: Submarines
There are horses for courses and I see the new diesel as more of a defence of Australia with its big coastline to prevent any Pearl Harbour type attack especially as we do not have many bases around the world to get to quickly and down the bottom of this article he says Nuclear costs three times as much. https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/2 ... r-upgrades

Re: Submarines
Initially I thought China was only trying to stop a blockade but now after Hong Kong it seems more aggressive especially as Japan and Taiwan are working together https://thediplomat.com/2021/09/parsing ... or-taiwan/ and because Australia may have to operate a long way from our shores the decision to go nuke.eddy wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 4:20 amThere are horses for courses and I see the new diesel as more of a defence of Australia with its big coastline to prevent any Pearl Harbour type attack especially as we do not have many bases around the world to get to quickly and down the bottom of this article he says Nuclear costs three times as much. https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/2 ... r-upgrades
