It was 2001 ST from Leichhardt if we're going by the fleet-lists. 2009 B12BLEA Volgren CR228L.

A little bit of hunting shows it to be 2001-ST, the class leader

Re: GLEBE POINT RD BUS FIRE.
Why it's the driver being treated like a hero? Surely there was plenty of warning. Stop bus, open doors, out.

Driver interviewed on one of the TV news, said smoke started coming out of dashboard.
Just 3 people on the bus, so big "save". At least driver did the right thing and evacuated the bus early.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
All buses should have a fire extinguisher. Did he use it?
It might have saved a 3/4 $million bus.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
The bus would have at least two extinguishers (one in the cab and one at the rear) . But they are small, and not much use if the fire is within the frame somewhere- it can be well advanced before it becomes noticeable inside.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
We should just be grateful no-one was hurt, who cares about a nearly fully depreciated tin box. May have been a less happy story if it had occurred when the bus had a heavier load outbound. Whether by good luck or good management, it came to rest in the centre lane, had it been in the kerbside lane, the multi-storey building adjacent may have gone up.
As anybody that has ever used a hand held fire extinguisher will attest, they will put out something created by a dropped cigarette, but anything stronger, forget it...fire wins.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
That is another good thing with the Mercedes dashes. They are isolated units suspended from the steering column. These new computer buses have to integrate everything into the front of the body so any hidden electrical fires get a chance to take hold while concealed inner all that cladding to make the bus look as car like as possible rather than the commercial vehicle that they are.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
Tartan will be amused.
How long have they had these buses? 12 years now?
They better get to the route ..sorry root cause or another may lead to the loss of buildings next time.
That was a nasty inferno. I wonder which bus will end up getting it's engine and gearbox unless they got well and truly done like a dinner as well?
Is Transient ..sorry Transit Systems self insured like the State Transit Authority?

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
The buses are owned by the state of NSW - not by the operators. The asset owner is responsible for insurance but I would guess would be self-insured, it doesn't make sense to pay an insurance company when you're such a larger asset owner like the state.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
It appears that TSA insured its buses with Allianz, whilst STA still seems to use GIO which would be a hangover from its days as the Government Insurance Office.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
Insurance of Government assets is normally handled through its self-insurance arm, the Treasury Managed Fund.
As the buses are being used by third parties, the operators may be required to have independent cover over and above this.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
True, but surely this would be just to cover for actions of their employees if deemed to be the cause of the accident. Not just driver error but perhaps maintenance errors, if that's what caused the fire. If it is a manufacturing fault or just an "act of god" which is no one's fault, it would typically be the asset owner's insurance (or lack thereof) that would come into play, right?

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
That is the way I imagined it would work. similar to leasing a car - the finance company owns it, but you are responsible for all the operating costs. Guess the detail would be written into the operating contracts.

Re: Parramatta Road Bus Fire
As I understand, in the U.S, you don't have to repair or service a car that is leased. Isn't that the case here?
