Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
These big "gutsy" projects rarely get off the ground and I am afraid this one is in that category!!
Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
I may be wrong but the minute the 20 TBM are ordered from China https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x4igzBxwLM then our exports will resume immediatly to China without anyone losing face while recovering the $4b for the TBMTim Williams wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 5:51 pm These big "gutsy" projects rarely get off the ground and I am afraid this one is in that category!!
Then the 600km/h Japanese Maglev https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpRqlehZ0X8 could be running within 5 years.

Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
This very similar hardrock TBM https://www.therobbinscompany.com/proje ... l-project/ did 10 kilometres in five years so I would expect Sydney/Canberra to be done even faster as each team would learn off and compete with each other.

The AUD today is 0.7685 USD https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/currency/audusd and if we have any chance to compete globally the Australian government needs to print sufficient to bring it down a few cents and order the 20 hardrock TBM now.

Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
China wants to create more innovative industries and I believe that if they have an opportunity to sell 20 hardrock TBM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x4igzBxwLM to Australia they would.
This may even lead to a better trade relationship where we maintain more of our export industry.

I did not realise the Snowy 2 TBM was made in China https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVP8icXLajs

Even though many TBM are designed in France, Germany and America etc. I believe they are all built in China https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhKawvi59vU

Ordering the 20 Chinese TBM now rather than paying the dole for the next two years would make the A$ more competitive while improving trade relations between us.
This may be helpful to anyone interested to work out the viability https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPgUrvEVgcs

Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
Anthony Albanese wants to buy land for a surface HSR https://www.herbertsmithfreehills.com/l ... -australia but I believe that it would be cheaper with a single tunnel as there is no land to buy, no service roads to build or maintain, no fences to build or maintain, no bridges to build and maintain, no security needed and tunnels generally last at least twice as long as viaducts.
Australia could easily print the money and order 20 Chinese TBM and install proven 600km/h Japanese maglev within five years Parrahub/Canberra airport while dropping the A$ a few cents to make it more competitive.

If they have to "print" money, I think there are much higher priorities than this.

Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
I agree that there may be more popular big things to do as you are looking at a total of $20b and all could make the A$ more competative but by ordering the 20 Chinese TBM it may reduce tensions Australia/China.Fleet Lists wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 6:19 pm If they have to "print" money, I think there are much higher priorities than this.
It is better than paying guys the dole.

"Popular" is the wrong word. I would think there are more "urgent" things.

Health, education, possibly defense with Maglev way down the list.

Re: Sydney to Melbourne Maglev via Canberra
Regarding education the best way to learn is to do and if all the redundant coalminers learn and compete with each other we may become number one tunnel drivers in the world rather than have all our existing mining skills lost.Fleet Lists wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 7:25 pm Health, education, possibly defense with Maglev way down the list.

You clearly have no understanding of basic economics if you think money can just be printed.eddy wrote: ↑Australia could easily print the money and order 20 Chinese TBM and install proven 600km/h Japanese maglev within five years Parrahub/Canberra airport while dropping the A$ a few cents to make it more competitive.

Not to mention that covid has put us billions into debt which will take a decade or more to pay off.

It is not what you do but how you do it and just making the rich richer and the poor poorer like in America is no good as you need to create big iconic unifying schemes that increase skills rather than growing crops that only pay $3/hour.
With the Australian government being owned by America https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq8H0GHU8AQ it sends a message to others we are just their lapdog and this makes it hard to be independent which we may have to be if the American dollar ceases to be the main world currency.

But what you propose does not solve any of it. Economics have proved that over the years.

I believe it would solve many problems.
One --- It would get people Parrahub/Canberra airport in 20 minutes for less than a conventional surface HSR would cost in five years.
Two---- Make the A$ competitive again.
Three--Transition mining skills rather than paying the dole.
Four ---Perhaps unite the country with a big iconic thing that people would come to experience.
Five----Improve trade relations with China.

If one day the general public feels as safe going in a pressure reduced tunnel at 1000km/h, just like in a plane, then I suggest the tunnel should be continuous with stations at a minimum 200 kilometers apart so it would be best to build it that way in case that happens in the future.
