V sets turn 50
The first V set was commissioned into service as F111 in 1970 witch was a 4 car set that would of been most likely with a consist made up of 2 DCF power cars and 2 DTF trailers. The V set has been in service for 50 years and it sounds like the V sets will run for 51 years before the last revenue service for the V set
Re: V sets turn 50
They were a class act, never to be repeated. Except for mobility-impaired people though, which was the problem.

Re: V sets turn 50
Nobody was thinking of mobility and the rights of the handicapped back in the late 60s and early 70s as there wouldn't of been a DDA or any type of document to recognise the rights of people with any type of handicap to use public transport safely

The V (U) set, the Range Rover, America's GM RTS bus, the Leyland National, the Boeing 747 jumbo jet, the Bell 206 Jetranger helicopter and the Concord. All remarkable late 1960s designs ready for the 70s and beyond.
I have seen the year 1969 stamped on the plate of the first V set (actually U sets) type train cars.
It was probably completed by the end of 1969 ready for 1970 launch.

How long did F111 last? I can only remember them as U sets.Campbelltown busboy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 6:56 pm The first V set was commissioned into service as F111 in 1970 witch was a 4 car set that would of been most likely with a consist made up of 2 DCF power cars and 2 DTF trailers. It is a shame they being run down now.
Noisy air-conditioning in the end saloons; vibrating, noisy air compressors in the power cars, failing PA systems. Things that take the edge off an enjoyable ride are becoming more common

Re: V sets turn 50
I guess the discussion is about V sets - or double deck interurbans - running for 50 years as a class. The original (U) sets haven't run for 50 years. The idea for the class was kicked off by the new Liberal government in 1965, it was tendered out to Comeng in about 1967 and they spent the rest of the 1960s developing, testing and building the first trains. The first train was handed over in March 1970 and it went into revenue service on 22 June 1970. The full sixteen cars were in service by 12 October 1970.

Re: V sets turn 50
I don't think anyone has mentioned, weren't they the world's first all-double-deck production run of EMU trains?

Re: V sets turn 50
I would think that the government that where in power in the late 60s would of been doing double deck trials on the suburban network with a 4 car Tulloch electric double deck train witch gave them the idea of a double deck interurban train that the government of the time wanted to last for a long time
Re: V sets turn 50
The experimental Tulloch set with power cars predated the V by a couple of years (1967), but yes the first production run of a dd train was the Vs. The government of the day was Liberals.

The prototype Tulloch set was 8 cars, not 4.

Re: V sets turn 50
It was good that the Tulloch double deck trailers did get their own power cars if only a few and for a limited period.
They did blight the shiny stainless steel sets though.
