Unusual axle notes

Post by TA3001 »

Whilst some here may not notice these subtle differences that are obvious between various MAN buses built in Australia up to the 2000s at least, I have decided to link to a short recording of an Adelaide CNG SL202 that was recorded last year. My primary question is, does this bus sound unusually bland in comparison to other MANs from the 1990s?

Essentially the audio file depicts the vehicle accelerating to about 60kph, with high revs in fourth gear until it changes at about 59kph. It's just over a minute in length, and was captured without any filters in use. It has a 5 speed ZF transmission.

It was retired on 22/01/19 sadly. It has a fairly quiet albeit audible background rhythm to it that I have only noticed with this particular SL202 is audible if one listens carefully. I have only noticed one other MAN bus that is like it, and this is 1735 which is a diesel NL202 built in 1997. I am just curious as to what causes this vehicle to sound like it does.
