What lines are the NGR currently servicing? I knew the Gold Coast was first. So many are being delivered but how many are in service and what lines.

NGR trains are currently in service on the Airport/ Gold Coast lines, Doomben line and Redcliffe and Springfield lines. The most numerous NGR trains are on the Gold Coast/ Airport lines. They all run through the central stations as all the lines pass through. The Doomben trains often terminate at Roma Street, but they are not all NGR. The Springfield and Redcliffe lines tend to run some NGR trains at morning and afternoon peaks and can terminate at Bowen Hills. EMUs and SMUs other times.
I do not have figures for the number in service; it is increasing all the time. The NGR trains also travel on the Ipswich/ Rosewood line as test trains to and from Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre.
701, 702 and a damaged 715 can be seen from Redbank Station.

Any particular reason Queensland chose narrow gauge instead of a wider system? They look like the sugar cane tracks to the north. I wonder what the gauge of Gold Coast Light Rail is. They look to be standard gauge.
QR Citytrain need to go dual gauge so as they can phase in standard gauge rolling stock in the future.

Queensland choose 3’6” gauge when Australia was a country of separate colonies and joining of the separate rail systems was not contemplated, as the settlements were thousands of miles apart and the lines were constructed to ferry goods and produce to the ports. Narrow gauge was selected as it was cheaper to construct and the lines also followed the contours of the land and avoided tunnels and earthworks to lower costs. We do have dual gauge into the Port of Brisbane, Acacia Ridge and Roma Street for the interstate train to Sydney. I can’t see conversion to standard gauge of the entire system ever happening as the cost would be uneconomic, so that is why we have Bombardier NGR trains with narrow gauge bogies. On the new extensions the track is built much straighter and the narrower gauge is not a problem as the trains can safely travel at 140klm. The Gold Coast tram is 4’8½” gauge.

Thanks for that, hopefully they will be on all line soon including the Sunshine Coast Line, because every time I am up there that particular Gympie North ICE service is always cancelled or delayed due to mechanical faults.

Must confess, their aerodynamic noses have grown on me. I just hope their interiors reflect their futuristic looks on the the outside and their doors open and shut fast in the traditional way.

NGR trains have been in service on the Ipswich- Caboolture line since Oct 22. Here is NGR 738 at Ipswich station 29 Nov. The trains get switched around between lines seen NGR 738 Saturday on the Gold Coast line.
All the NGR trains I ve seen in service have 1 on board toilet, situated mid train. As we are now over half way into the total order of 75 trains, and an earlier announcement was made * that only the Interurban fleet—35 trains with 2 toilet modules (in the middle 2 cars) for longer distance services be fitted with an on board toilet and Suburban fleet—40 trains with no toilets for shorter distance services would be in service with no toilet, I assume that some are to be modified post delivery and the removed parts used for spares.

NGR 728 doing test train runs on the wrong road past the WMC. The line carries a lot of traffic, coal trains, some wheat trains and a passenger service. Some times the tracks have to be used in either direction. NGR 758 has been seen in test runs so they are well into the order for 75 6 car units.

NGR 756 seen in service on Gold Coast line. NGR 702 is in decorative wrap like 704, 705, 706, and doing test train runs. NGR 701 has been at Maryborough for modifications since late January.

Definitely growing on me this new QR Citytrain stock . I really admire the quick shutting doors. Can you imagine NSW adopting such a common sense idea? We are only now re-adopting the radical idea that single decks work better for high turnover work.

NGR 763 and NGR 764 have arrived today at the WMC coupled together behind diesel locos. NGR 758 seen in service.

NGR702 one of the early deliveries and at Progress rail sidings for a while, now with decorative wrap like 704, 705, 706, going at slow speed through the automatic train inspection building at WMC.

To their credit, they didn't cover the windows in the wrap so I don't really have a problem with it. And I do think it looks kinda funky and as it's only been applied to a few of the sets, it's fairly unique. But I can see what you mean.
