Bus Depots Of Private Bus Companies Before MTT Took over?

Post by Denv12 »

I would like to get some idea where all the private bus depots were throughout Adelaide. They were the companies who ran the metropolitan services to and from the city before the MTT/STA took them over. Companies like Briscoes,Choats,Ex Servicemans,Bridgelands,Coles,Morphett's,Footes,Graebers,Langs,Thomas Tours,Harcourts,Bowmans,Henstridge,Campbells,Worthleys,Slatterys just to name a few. If you can help with information please do.Photos, etc welcome too. Thanks. And,you can add what is located there these days if you want. That includes bus companies in the Adelaide Hills too. I added photos of a few buses.A variety of buses used by MTT and STA at the time.

Update:
Thank you to each of you for your replies and information.Thank you to 1whoknows for your feedback.Thats some good history there.I remember seeing some of those depots.

As an aside, the photos are a very interesting progression of Lawton styles - from the late 40s to the early 60s. Of course, the middle of that period saw a large number of buses go to the MTT - all to a single design.

one bus service that is generally not mentioned is the Adelaide to Walkers Flat, which ceased when the buses moved from North Terrace to current Bus Terminal in Franklin St

To answer the original quaestion...

Bowmans 1146 North East Road St Agnes
Campbells 2 Aldridge Ave Plympton
Cole's Winston Court Daw Park
Choats Main Road Stirling
Foote's 90 Days Road Croydon Park
Ex Servicemen's 31 Harvey St Nailsworth
Harcourt Gardens Dumbarton Ave Edwardstown
Henstridge 1182 South Road Clovelly Park
Morphetts 145 Churchill Road Kilburn
Slattery's 15 Portrush Road Payneham
Thomas Tours 636 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Briscoe 53 Gawler Parade Port Noarlunga
Transway 3 Coglin Road Elizabeth
Langs Susan Street West Hindmarsh

Dont know about Worthley as they had sold out by the time my records commence.
Perhaps someone in Adelaide could go round, photograph and post what exists at these locations now.
Only Bowmans and Harcourt Gardens are still active bus depots afaik.

Do you have any idea where Graeber’s or Mt Barker Passenger Service depots were?

The other Morphetts bus service depot was at 294 Military Rd, Grange. On Google maps you can see the bitumen forecourt and the servicing sheds at the rear of the property. They operated the Port Adelaide to Glenelg route (taken over by MTT to become the 33 and 34 routes between Port and Seacliff in the early 70s) and the Tennyson school bus from Henley High (and charter work).

Worthley's depot was on the corner of Brighton Road and Oatlands Road (originally Adelaide Road) as part of as service station. The garage is still on the corner. The Worthley house is next to it along Oatlands Road.

I believe the first photo in the above group was actually Transways number 17, they had two both Leyland Leopards. Can’t remember the fleet number of the second unit. Both units had electric gearshift the same as 700 series MTT buses.
I actually drove for Transway when the bought these two buses.

L.A. Johnson's depot was on Strathalbyn Rd, Aldgate. There were 2 "depots" at Oakbank to operate the Woodside to Adelaide service (took over from Salisbury Transport Industry)& Goolwa to operate the Goolwa to Adelaide service.

Do you know where on Strathalbyn Rd? I frequent the section through Aldgate but wouldn’t have placed any of it as bud depot location

Depot used to be on the corner of Ashendon Rd and Strathalbyn Rd, used to be a service station as well. A double storey house now occupies the site.

Sorry for bringing up an old post.

My understanding is Slattery's had multiple bus depots, and that there at one stage was a depot on Wilpena Avenue (Klemzig) that multiple operators once used. Can anyone confirm any locations? Thanks in advance

Wilpena Ave was Ambassadors depot, later Flynn but several others lodged there including Road King . However they were not route operators as per the original question in the thread.

I believe that Slattery's only had the one Depot, which was at the end of Douglas Place, Payneham South (Off Marian Road, tucked in behind St. Joseph's).

Following on from my previous post, search under Photos SA section for CMCMANUS parts 8 and 74 for pics of Slattery's depot, as described above.

What is today on the site of the Transway Depot at 3 Coglin Road at Elizabeth? (I am trying to put GPS on some old photos).
