Ex Mt Dandy Volvo

Post by John&Andrea »

We have just purchased this old Volvo that was used in the Dandenong Rangers by the Dandy Bus company -- Does any one have any photos of the Mt Dandy Bus company Volvo 's in their original colours? Also can anyone tell me the model and year this bus is?

That Volvo looks like one acquired from Canberra by Invicta in the late 80's early 90's. Mt Dandy did not operate any Volvos as far as I can remember. Invicta had a few of these buses and they operated until about 1999. I think they were Volvo B58's from the early to mid 70's but I stand to be corrected.

The Volvo pictured was one of about 3 Volvo B58/Smithfield buses that Invicta purchased from ACTION in Canberra in 1989.They date from 1975.
John,if you check inside your bus on the front header,or in the door step well of the bus you ,hopefully should be able to locate the bodybuilders plate or a compliance plate. If you can give us the body number of the bus,or VIN,we should be able to fill you in on its history.
Cheers.

Hi Burrumbus and Scott, we have spoken to the owner before last and he said it came from the Croydon Mt Dandy Bus company. He said it has a low ratio gear box to cope with this area. Very Glad to have more input though.
Compliance plate: Smithfield Bus & coach works: vehicle Id number: SBC-425. Year of Manufacture: 5/6/75
We get her home tomorrow from the mechanic, he hasn't located the VIN , any clues to where we look?
We've looked in the fleet lists for Ventura and really hope you guys can find or have more info.
Thanks
John

Good morning John and Andrea. Thanks for locating the body plate and for everyone elses input.
Complete history is
Volvo B58/Smithfield(SBC425M5/6/75)B41D.The chassis number is 5465.
Registered by ACTION,Canberra as fleet number 353)ZIB 328,26/6/75.
Rereg onto its matching plates ZIB 353 in 7/75.
Rereg to BUS 353.
Sold to Croydon Bus Service Pty.Ltd,t/a Invicta,Lilydale,1989.
Registered as 45)DYP 968.
If it does have a VIN number it should either be in the step well or on the wall beside the drivers seat.It may have been manufactured before VIN's became mandatory.
Hope this helps.

Just a thank you , The Cap a tan for the photos so much appreciated
We hope to do this bus up , it has had some minor repairs but I will be into some major repairs over the next few months if I can obtain the parts , it has sat in the back yard of a previous owner , for he tells me about 16 years with out turning a wheel, so let the fun begin , did I say fun or did I say poverty begin.
But thanks again ..... Love to see these old photos and bits of history that I have been able to put together on Bus45
Also sorry if I put this post in the wrong area

Hi All,
John found a sister bus today. Number 41, DYP979 (still plated), in a storage facility in The Basin. Unfortunately she has been without windows for a couple of years and is pretty rusted out. We spoke to the owner but he seems to want to recoup his $30-40k he said he has spent on the engine etc so we won't be able to salvage some spares as we hoped. We are chasing the dash gauges as ours don't work. It was good to see an intact dash so we know what the lights are for. If anyone knows where to source some gauges can they let us now? Does the VDO instrument shop on cnr Heatherdale Rd and Maroondah Hwy recondition gauges? Or can you suggest somewhere else?

Another place I found that looks to service gauges and has a big website is Howard Instruments in Heidelberg.

Hope this is of some help.

I am nearly sure I have a full set of B58 gauges, steering wheel & other parts. I will have a good look on Monday.
