It is not as straight forward as at. It depends on the terms of the lease. In the case of car leases which may be only short term the user does not have to maintain but in the case of long term leases like it is for the buses, it is a different story.

As I understand, in the U.S, you don't have to repair or service a car that is leased. Isn't that the case here?
There would be a difference between cars obtained under a finance package (3-5 years), and short term rentals.

It will all come down to how the contracts between the lessor and TfNSW, and between TfNSW and Transit Systems, are structured, and then how the insurance policies are taken out. Fleets are often covered by one umbrella policy, rather than individual comprehensive insurance for each vehicle, as we take out on our cars. As none of us are privy to the details though, it's all just speculation.

Suffice to say that the bus involved at over 10 years old involved would have been close to being fully depreciated, so even if it had a $750k purchase price as suggested, the settlement may only end up being a five figure amount. Not as if Transit Systems are short of buses and with new buses coming on stream regularly, its loss will be able to be covered by deferring a withdrawal.

The bus operated by Transit Systems was destroyed by fire, likely the result of an electrical fault. Preliminary investigations found high amperage auxiliary cables running between the jump start socket and the battery isolator switch panel had abraded against the rear most upper edge of the saloon heater assembly. The abrasion wore through the outer conduit and insulation of the positive cable, likely causing the cable to short circuit.

Interesting that the "jump start socket" and related cabling seems only be on some of these buses. Optional feature at ordering, or was it added later?
Could be a problem for the installer/designer if it was an "aftermarket" modification.

Sounds like this convenience feature is not worth the risk of having. :!:
