Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
What are the chances that the Waratahs be around for as long as the L,R,S were in service ?
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
The government scrapped the Variotram fleet at 18 years of service instead of giving them their 'mid life' overhaul. So they have form for scrapping equipment that needs its major 'mid life' overhaul.
And given the delays on the Tangara Technology Upgrade program - when they decide on a refit, it goes wrong.
With the Chinese turning out new trains so cheaply, when the reliably declines to 'mid-life refit required', they will find new Chinese built trains the more attractive option.
I think the era of trains lasting 50-60 or more years is gone.
Part of the problem is related to the 'right to repair' that's made the news in the consumer electronics field. But the idea is not new. These computer-controlled electronic trains are full of proprietary parts you can only get from the original vendor and for the most part, they will NOT release sufficient technical information for the computers and electronics to be repaired 'inhouse'. You have to pull the module and send it back to OEM for repair/overhaul. At their asking price.

They are leased for 30 years, so will be around for at last that long.boxythingy wrote: ↑What are the chances that the Waratahs be around for as long as the L,R,S were in service?
Has been gone for a while, most Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane EMU stock replaced in the 21st century has been about 40 years old.matthewg wrote: ↑I think the era of trains lasting 50-60 or more years is gone.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
The waratah contracts state the length of the lease. Key to remember that the lease states the number of sets, so should some need earlier retirement, then that set would need to be replaced at no cost to the government, see A80 as replacement for A2

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
So theoretically, at year 29 of the contract 10 sets were too far gone Maintainence wise, they’d have to replace them with 10 new sets a year before the contract runs out
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
If 10 were too far gone, then they would probably all be too far gone given that they all accrue more or less the same mileage. If for whatever reason the Reliance Rail consortium cannot provide the number of sets per the contract, there would be financial penalties. The consortium (via its insurance) would have funded A80, as A2 was damaged before it was delivered.
But if a set were written off then the contract value would be amended and Sydney Trains would just make do with one less set. The cost of building a one-off replacement would be prohibitively expensive and within a couple of years impossible, as all of the equipment used by the manufacturer to build them will have been scrapped or repurposed.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
B sets aren't under the lease. They're actually owned by the government outright from memory.

It was reported back in 2013 that NSW Gov't had "100% equity" in RR, so they should be in a position to amend any contracts to suit circumstances?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
After they bought out Reliance Rail I recall this was due partly to the GFC and Reliance Rail had some missteps financially, and the (current Liberal) government totally bought it out to keep the A set delivery schedule?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Wolli Creek Station as a major station is not servicing T4 Trains between 12pm to 3pm only today because of trackwork. Pity a Sydenham or Arncliffe shuttle buses are running due to no provision of theoretical platforms 5 and 6 which may have prevented such occurrences from happening if this was possible
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Not really a big deal, for those who want to complete their journey by rail, they can change at Central.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Anyone have any idea about these out of service B sets in Penrith? Another set just arrived in Penrith just this minute. Can't Id it but B18 was here on Tuesday aswell we've also had out of service M and K sets in the past 2 weeks.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Bearing Acoustic Monitors have recently been installed along the track.
These Monitors check moving trains to detect dangerous conditions and alert Signallers and Operators to facilitate corrective action.
B sets are being used to test this equipment between St Marys and Penrith.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
Thanks Scott. Any idea of the K and M sets or is it same purpose?
It's very odd to see Penrith bound trains leave from St Marys platform 2 but atleast I know why now.

No different to using buses to mid-route relief points I guess?Scott4570 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 10, 2021 12:28 pm As per AnyTrip with Consists as shown therein, the following movements have been taking place today, Saturday, July 10:-

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
A person called into 2GB about half hour ago saying that a container truck lost it's container on Burwood road Burwood after the driver attempted to drive the truck under the rail bridge with the container on the back would this effect the rail service

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2021
There are crash bars before the actual bridge, so shouldn't affect trains.
