Paper doesn't really say much about the Captain Cook - Lane Cove route.
No fares stated, and it's recently had subsidies during Covid.
Personally think it would be better brought fully under Opal (many of the wharves need an upgrade) and you've then got a 2nd operator to benchmark against, even if it's service pattern (peak only) is very different.

LA PEROUSE - KURNELL
Transport for NSW has lodged a "state significant infrastructure" application regarding the reinstatement of ferry wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell. One can only wonder about what rules TfNSW is trying to circumvent by having such a project declared "SSI".

Re: Ferry Observations for 2021
This project has been floating around for a few years. I believe there has been dissension about a modern wharf being built in an historic site at Kurnell.

A project is classified as an SSI, whether government or private sector, if it reaches a certain cost threshold. Not everything is a conspiracy.

Finally, the outcome of DA 123/1769 lodged by J Cook of Whitby for a landing wharf at Botany Bay, after going through the NSW planning and environmental process.

Here's a useful document about the Kamay Ferry Wharves (La Perouse / Kurnell) project:
https://roads-waterways.transport.nsw.g ... -sheet.pdf
Some highlights:
https://roads-waterways.transport.nsw.g ... -sheet.pdf
Some highlights:
The NSW Government proposes to reinstate ferry wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell. A ferry service operated between the two
places from the late 1890s until 1974 when severe storms damaged the wharves. Reinstating wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell has been considered at various times since 1974. Most recently in 2016, Transport for NSW completed a Feasibility Study into the viability of reinstating the wharves. The study concluded that reinstating the wharves would provide numerous benefits for La Perouse, Kurnell and wider Sydney.
I recommend reviewing the whole document - it later notes that it's primarily aimed at tourists visiting the national park, with commuters from Kurnell a secondary user.On 28 April 2018, the Prime Minister and Federal Treasurer announced $50 million in funding towards Stage 1 of the Master Plan with contributions coming from both the Federal ($25 million) and NSW ($25 million) Governments. Stage 1 of the Master Plan includes the re-establishment of the wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell.
TfNSW has established a project team to undertake the planning, design, environmental assessment, and proposed construction of the La Perouse and Kurnell wharves and associated infrastructure. In addition to the wharf structures there are plans to include facilities to support the operation of the wharves including additional car parking and drop off zones (with provision for disability access), sheltered passenger
waiting areas, lighting, and other ancillary items such as ticketing and security provisions.

Hmm, what's the story with the "data download" feature that's not available. Shouldn't that be a basic feature that would cause the ferries to not be allowed into service? What's the point of a voyage data recorder if you can't download the data from them?

Re: Ferry Observations for 2021
These are virtually the same locations as the wharves for the original ferry services. I remember the original Kurnell wharf was a long way out from the shore, must be shallow water there. The laPerouse wharf was at the back of the boatshed, now a restaurant I think.
There is no road leading up to to the Kurnell location, and only a token bus service there. It is a destination, rather than an interchange point. I wonder if it would have any appeal as an alternative commuter route to the CBD for Cronulla area residents? (Bus-ferry-bus-tram).
As a tourist route, I thought a suggested wharf at Brighton Le Sands would have provided some benefit with bus access from Rockdale station.

Re: Ferry Observations for 2021
Perhaps if the metro to La Perouse is ever built as planned it could get some more value as a commuter route but even then probably too much hassle
Re: Ferry Observations for 2021
Is there any kind of wharf in Brighton Le Sands now? I thought I recalled seeing whale watching cruises advertising a Brighton-Le-Sands departure point a few years back, but I don't know the exact wharf being used and am not too familiar with the area.
Regarding the long walk to the departure points, this is mentioned in the documents and for Kurnell, there was an option to position it somewhat closer to the road. However they preferred using the existing location as they can extend the existing viewing platform into the ferry wharf pier, which reduces environmental impact. At the La Perouse end, they mentioned moving the bus terminus closer to the wharf , which seems like a good idea - this would also make it more convenient for day visitors arriving by bus at La Perouse (but could be a traffic issue).
Both wharfs will be fixed with the long sloping ramp at DDA-compliant grades to account for the tidal range. This is because the amount of swell in the area, particularly during storms, would be difficult to design a floating platform for.
Re: Ferry Observations for 2021
The ferries seem to be operating at a less than Sunday timetable on all routes e.g. F1, F5 hourly all day, F3 half hourly peak, hourly off peak.

Re: Ferry Observations for 2021
The current La Perouse bus terminus is about 300 metres walk to the proposed wharf. Most of the people arriving by car will probably end up having to walk further than this due to limited car parking in the immediate area.
At Kurnell, the wharf would be close to the NPWS visitors centre, which is the main attraction in the area. Kurnell village has little to offer tourists

So is the blinding night lights an
Engineering error (ie. In the plans that were presumably done in Australia), or a
Construction error (so offshore)?
Can't believe the are still bleating about the upper deck and the bridges. The very similar CC ferries on the route have been doing this for years.

The bridges "problem" is good fodder for Labor supporters to whinge about, acknowledging the simple solution is beyond them.
