T3 Bankstown line school holiday trackwork
Monday 14 June 2021
Stations between Bankstown and Sydenham will be closed from Monday 28 June to Sunday 11 July as essential works are carried out to deliver the Sydney Metro & Southwest project.
If you commute via the T3 Bankstown Line you should plan ahead with temporary public transport changes in place for the winter school holidays.
Frequent bus services and additional trains will ensure you can continue to get where you need to go during the temporary disruption.
There will be 180 additional buses to run hundreds of extra services with a bus every three minutes during the busiest part of the morning peak on the T3 Bankstown line.
More train services will also be added to the network, including 180 extra trains per day on the T8 Airport & South Line to complement the buses. There will be bus marshals and customer service staff to help customers on the ground at impacted stations.
This work is being done during the school holiday period as there are less people on the network, which reduces the impact on the community, with an estimated 40 per cent decrease in patronage during weekdays.
The work will see upgrades to ensure all stations will be fully accessible with level access platforms and lifts when metro services start in 2024. Customers on the line will benefit from a new fully-air conditioned metro train every four minutes in the peak in each direction.
The work to upgrade Sydenham Station for metro rail is coming to an end with two new station entrances added, a brand new fully-accessible concourse and metro platforms built, and other improvements to make it easier to interchange between Sydney Trains, metro rail, and buses.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
They actually made a brochure for this (haven't been see one for a long time),
https://www.mysydney.nsw.gov.au/sites/d ... 202021.pdf
Looking at the timetable, most weekday connection to T8 (53, 54, 55) operates every 10 mins (4-5 min in peak direction), and travel time is generally within 15 mins to the nearest T8 station. But since Revesby all stopper still take a bit of time to reach the city, that travel impact is still significant.
Another interesting question is: who can supply some 100 buses in the busy AM peak??

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
School holiday means less buses used during morning and afternoon peak as there wouldn’t be any school services, that will free up lots of buses as well having lots of private charter companies coming in to help will get that magical number.lyjjimmy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 11:41 am They actually made a brochure for this (haven't been see one for a long time),

A lot of school runs are tacked on the end or start of regular peak service shifts which still have to be covered, so perhaps not so many surplus buses from this?

According to the timetables they will be spread over
51T3 and 52T3 - Transdev
53T3 Punchbowl Bus Co
10T3, 54T3 and 55T3 Hillsbus
13T3, 33T3 and 74T3 Transit Systems

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Given that is is school holidays, operators who primarily operate school services; North Sydney Bus Charters, Telfords etc, and are regular providers of rail replacement buses, will have plenty of buses avaialble.lyjjimmy wrote: ↑Another interesting question is: who can supply some 100 buses in the busy AM peak??

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
I know that Punchbowl and Transdev, while they have a number of peak shifts that also cover school services, they have more school services which are standalone, and hence buses which operate the latter would be available for these special services, and looking at the number of buses required from their timetables, they would not require assistance. Looking at the fleet sizes for Hillsbus and Transit Systems, I would be surprised if between the four operators they would need any major assistance to provide 100 buses for these replacement services.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Will come down to how many buses only operate school service rosters and staff availability, given that there will be a spike in staff taking leave. Even on weekends, when there will be a higher percentage of fleets available from the lead contractors and the vehicle requirement is relatively low, it is still common for buses to be sub-contracted from other operators for rail replacements.

That was the beauty of the fly-by-nighters. They were able to come in at very short notice.

^ Must admit that's awesome. Beautiful tunnel pics showing the scale with the premier and transit minister standing there. :O

The route 10T3 is currently displaying the operator as 'State Transit Sydney'. The operator code is 18 which is STA Region 9.Fleet Lists wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 12:15 pmAccording to the timetables they will be spread over

Oops - they have updated the Operator name or I made mistake. But this provides even more buses available for this exercise without getting buses from other operators.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Is this the first time using the express buses to the T8 stations? It will be interesting to see if this is successful and if the longer shutdowns continue this approach.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
There are a couple of Facebook groups - Save the T3 Bankstown Line and Sydenham Bankstown Alliance opposed to the metro, and now somewhat disturbed by Constance's broken promise of "no school holiday shutdowns" and are running "scare campaigns" to spook passengers with rather dubious claims about Chaos, crises, overcrowding and long journey times.
It seems that much of the work in the first week will be centred around Marrickvile. TfNSW has written to local residents warning of extended noise levels during the day and evenings, and offering $25 "respite" vouchers for each night of the work as compensation.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
I lived near a major road once when they were doing massive intersection improvements. Not as part of a major project, but it was still annoying at nights (quite a few nights). I didn't get anything in return, except the one time they offered free pizza (just once).
Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
May not be representative numbers any more with the lockdown - although in the end it's great timing for the shutdown
Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Yes, lengthy Bankstown/East Hills line shutdowns have seen replacement buses ply between affected stations to the adjacent line's major stations to use up more capacity/run additional trains on the adjacent line.
Though usually these have happened during the quieter January summer holiday periods.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Quite coincidental that the lockdown is simultaneous with the T3 shutdown. Guess there is no better time to have a rail line shutdown than during a locktown.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
From my observations today, 10T3 seems to be mostly run by State Transit (Ryde depot). But I also saw one TSA R3 bus.Stu wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 3:29 pmThe route 10T3 is currently displaying the operator as 'State Transit Sydney'. ^ 10T3 is STA and also includes Port Botany Depot. TSA provides standby buses for 10T3.
Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
With the lockdown resulting in a big dip in PT usage, there are dozens upon dozens of standby/spare buses sitting in the streets around Central all week. At what point do they realise they've contracted too many and let some drivers stay home?
Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
None you would say, since it is contracted and thus already paid for.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
10T3 is definitely being run by State Transit, contracted to Region 9 by the looks of things but depots from all regions operating as is normal for STA rail. North Sydney, Port Botany, Randwick, Ryde, Waverley and Willoughby all appear to be operating trips.
Interesting mix of buses out for the shutdown, TSA even had their last remaining Citaro on 74T3s yesterday!
