Was interesting to see this snapshot in a recent City and Southwest update, and I wonder which extension will be announced next.

Although it's unlikely to happen if the LNP wins the next State Election, IMO it should be extending the SWRL from Leppington to WSA and not just the Aerotropolis (Bradfield), followed by the extension of the metro from Bankstown to Liverpool. Interestingly, the SWRL isn't even shown as part of the Sydney Trains' network. I wonder why?

Extending the Leppington line the 6 greenfield km to Bradfield should be such a simple task it's hardly worth mentioning, but there's not much point doing it until Bradfield, the metro and the station have actually materialised. I imagine when they build Bradfield station, they will create a box for the Leppington platform and excavate the approach, then a separate, likely concurrent, project would fill in the line between Leppington depot and Bradfield.

The Metro is closed for trackwork after 19:00 five nights per week for the next 4 weeks at least. An example here:

On the underlaid Sydney Trains' network, with the SWRL from Glenfield to Leppington not shown. It does however show the Carlingford Line, now closed as part of the rail network.

Why would the Metro need track work when it's so new?
Are the tracks made of play doh??

When they say "trackwork", it doesn't necessarily mean they will be working on the tracks per say. Could be anything from electrical repairs to track inspections to tunnel works. Either way, anything this size, scale and complexity needs to be looked at, maintained and repaired regularly. Failure to do so could have catastrophic consequences.

Yes although after 19:00 five nights per week for the next 4 weeks at least is pretty intense.

Having said that, patronage would be very low at the moment.

As if it's on the verge of derailing if they don't shut it down now! I bet very little work will go on much like many 40km/h roadworks zones. This is just an excuse to close it early during lockdown.
We're always getting scammed by these shonks.

There is no suggestion that trains are on the verge of derailing, but as Cazza said there are many other components apart from the track itself that require preventive maintenance. Some of it can be performed during the 4-5 hour nightly closure, but sometimes a longer window is required. IIRC, there was a report of a problem with some of the tunnel lining, it may be this that is being repaired.

Or it could be a longer maintenance window to allow the usual overnight maintenance to be done over a longer period due to staff shortages from postcode restrictions or social distancing requirements.

Tallawong-Schofields and Leppington-Bradfield looks to be the 2 shortest options and are both on the surface for all or most of their route. This should keep costs down and construction times fairly quick. With Sydney Metro West apparently costing $27bn and taking about a decade to build I don't know how keen the government would be for another mega rail project. Then again, a lot probably depends on whether workers remain WFH or head back into the city once we get to some level of COVID normal. So we will have to see.

The dance cards pretty full until the late 2020s.
Don't think you need to make that call until the next election cycle.

Bankstown to Liverpool extension will help with providing extra capacity and relief the T2 line (given there's not much they can do about the T2 capacity east of Lidcombe). It also falls partially in the marginal seat of East Hills.

Pitt St station proposed to be renamed Gadigal station. Comment on the rename proposal closes on 8th Nov.

People with logical, call a spade a spade minds expecting to alight at Gadigal Ave Zetland will find the surroundings rather confusing.

Great to see it changed, Pitt St (like Delhi Rd and Cudgegong Rd in the past) would have been a terrible name if it extended beyond a placeholder.

The new names for those other two places still identify their locality. Gadigal identifies nothing whatsoever, except the usual cringeworthy attempts at virtue signalling. Approaching it from another angle, if they build some mega-development there called Gadigal Towers or somesuch, the station name might have something to relate to. I would have thought that "Druitt St" would identify the location better, considering that Pitt St stretches from CQ to Central and beyond. People unfamiliar with locations deserve to have public transport stopping places named with some relevance to their locality.
