Radio station discussions

Post by scott »

A sister thread to the Television station discussions to deal with radio.

Macquarie Media (now owned by Channel 9) has made some further changes at 3AW effective January 20th, Denis Walter is leaving his afternoon show to move to Nights, this means that 2GB's John Stanley will no longer be heard in Melbourne.

Also John Burns, one half of the 3AW breakfast team is retiring in 2020 after the Olympics. 3AW afternoons will be Mebourne based, with an appointment expected soon, please don't let it be Darren James.

Obviously people are sick of hearing Sydney radio in Melbourne, so they have finally woken up.

There's also the possible third format change for Talking Lifestyle/Macquarie Sports Radio since Macquarie Media rebrand and did a major format change to 2UE witch was the Sydney based Fairfax talk station before the merger with the Macquarie Radio Network in 2015
Note 2UE wold of most likely have been the first radio station to start broadcasting in Australia

Steve Price has been sacked from 2GB, as he has failed to reach an agreement with the new management. Ross Greenwood also walked too, they both have been broadcast into Melbourne via 3AW. Steve Price moved to afternoons about 6 months ago.

3AW are reviving Rex Hunt's fishing show for a few weeks over summer.

Where did you hear that Steve Price has got the sack the last I heard he's taking about 3 weeks off then he's returning to continue his 2GB breakfast show fill in commitments until Alan Jones returns from his break

3AW overnights will now come from Sydney, with Tony Moclair dropped. Michael McLaren is the host.

The network syndication to 2GB programming that Nine is slowly doing to 3AW currently is exactly what Macquarie did with 4BC after the Fairfax merger

I managed to hear a snippet of Michael McLaren this morning, did not like what I heard, he seems to have a hint of the late Stan Zemanek in him, well at least in the bit I heard.

Zemanek did a one year stint with 3AW in 2002, he did not last long and was gone in 12 months, it was shown then that Sydney radio presenters can fail in the Melbourne market.

Jane Bunn, who has been doing weather reports on 3AW's breakfast show is the latest victim of the Nine Radio axe.

https://forums.mediaspy.org/t/nine-radio-talk/108/3046

Could also see the end of Stephen Quartermain (Ten News sport host) filling in on Breakfast when Ross and John are off, basically any non Channel 9 personality who does a spot on 3AW will most likely be let go.

Sad to hear today of the passing of Grant Goldman, long time Sydney radio and voice over announcer; a long term voice of City Rail/Sydney Trains DVAs.

Here is some some changes Sydney radio has changed in 30 years
2WS 1224 is now 101.7 WSFM
2UW 1107 is now KIIS 106.5
2KY 1017 is now Sky Racing Radio Sydney
2UE 954 has gone though 3 format changes

2WS and 2UW both moved to FM in the mid 90s
2KY got bought out by Sky Racing and the TAB some time in the last 20 years

3AW have reinstated Tony Moclair to the Overnight shift.

They have realised Sydney programming does not work in Melbourne.

I woke up to that grouse news this morning. Finally! And it's some rare good news considering these days.

Nine radio are trying to feed 2GB shows into Melbourne. They are trying to do what Macquarie Media did to 4BC to 3AW but the people of Melbourne don't want to loose their local 3AW presenters for a full line up that is mainly networked from the studios of 2GB

The only networked content on 3AW now is weekend overnights, the House of Wellness on Sunday and the finance program on weekday evenings that leads into Denis Walter's show.

I have heard little snippets of Dee Dee in the afternoon while in lockdown and I find it quite boring, I reckon they may of been better bringing in some fresh blood.

9 entertainment is doing some radio network changes at 4BC with the introduction of a Brisbane centric breakfast show as of June 1st witch will be hosted by Neil Breen witch means that 9 isn't networking the new 2GB breakfast show into Brisbane witch would make it easier on Ben Fordham during daylight savings

A chapter in 3AW has been closed today. An absolute legend of radio; John Burns, has signed off from 3AW Breakfast; going into retirement.

Russel Howcroft will take over from next Monday.

Thanks for the memories Burnso

With all the changes happening at 3AW with presenters that have been on 3AW for decades retiring or not receiving new contracts from 9 radio and new presenters that would most likely be a journalist that has no experience of presenting a radio program witch does happen

I can't say that I have listened to SAFM/Hit 107 by choice since I was a teenager. Since those days I've listened varyingly to MMM, Mix and Cruise
