Two new things this week!
Cathay Pacific are adding a second daily a350-900 flight to Sydney, replacing the Boeing 777 that previously operated this run. Still 4 daily flights

And another foreign airline is beginning flights from Avalon Airport. This time from Bali
Airline: Citilink
It’s actually beginning very soon, first flight begins January 24!

Lots of flights have been cancelled from China (mainland) to Australia due to the coronavirus outbreak. One noticeably rather big news that popped up yesterday is Virgin Australia axing flights for good from Hong Kong from March 2, 2020, ending shortly after Melbourne is from next Monday (11th February, 2020). I'm not surprised, to be honest, I could see it coming with all the protests that have happened and now, THIS!

https://www.executivetraveller.com/news ... ng-flights

I reckon we might see further service reductions if the coronavirus continues to spread. Airline after airline have reduced their services from the majority of Australian airports (Melbourne, Sydney etc). I hope not, but if it continues it's definitely going to impact Australian tourism and some businesses will not like to hear such news

It has just been announced that Virgin will suspend all flights as from tomorrow except one return Sydney Melbourne flight.

And even VIRGIN AUSTRALIA'S Sydney to Melbourne flight is only running 6 times a week, with the service not running on Saturdays.
Virgin Australia is suspending all domestic flights except for a single Sydney-Melbourne return service, which will run once per day except for Saturdays.
Clearly Virgin are desperately trying to save cash, and yes that's not surprising, given all these restrictions and a significant reduction in travel (plus also the immediate suspension of TigerAir Australia, its subsidiary, and the lay off of all its pilots). Let's hope they get some funding to keep them going during and after the virus pandemic. I do wonder whether they will get the $1.4 billion loan they have asked the Government for.

Not too many people are going to fly interstate if they will be subject to isolation, or complete rejection.

A sign of the times...
Yesterday, Sunday 19.4.20, an Air Services Beech was doing "circuits and bumps" using Mascot's "third" runway.

Around midday Monday 4.5.20, "skywriting" appeared over Sydney with "Happy sky day". What interests me is why the plane involved did not appear on the flightradar24 app. It was very high - barely visible to the naked eye.

Lots of interesting operators indeed! Thanks for compiling that list, its a shame we've been in quarantine instead of out photographing all our visitors.

Interesting that where the runway is not up to scratch they use extra wheels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZbmnYqkA9g

Not everyone may be aware of 'Flight Radar 24'. Do a search and worth a look.

Todays edition of The Australian has an article by Robyn Ironside, Aviation Editor, about Rex lodging a statement with the Australian Stock Exchange that it proposes to raise funds to compete with Qantas and Virgin on the Melbourne - Sydney - Brisbane 'Golden Triangle' route. Proposed start of March 2021 is quoted.

While this has been mentioned previously in the papers and media, one aviation commentator states that with 60,000 aircraft grounded across the world, the lease for a second hand Airbus A320 or Boeing 737NG could be as little as $50,000 a month. Mention is made of a possible fleet of 5 - 10 aircraft.

Of more interest to me in the article was mention of Rex having entered into a non-binding agreement with Avions De Transport Regional (ATR) to replace its current fleet of ageing 60 SAAB 340's with ATR42 and ATR72 turboprops.

Another aviation consultant is quoted as saying " Let's just hope they don't end up collapsing as a result of this new venture, and take those regional services (that they currently operate) down with them."

As freight becomes more time sensitive, I see direct flights with 50/50 freight and passengers in the future.

Or maybe for the next couple of the years at least or so. I expect air freight cargo will still be a high demand for a while

Just a thought bubble.

I wonder if a high wing 747 with front opening and just two huge engines and many wheels could operate out of freight hubs including passengers at the rear directly to smaller airports.

This may make future freight hubs very different.

EDIT
Last year https://www.airlineratings.com/news/del ... 20released.

Evidently it was a fire in the freight in Africa that caused the end of the 747 combi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLcGHgJ-Q4M

Here this guy thinks they may come back again https://simpleflying.com/combi-planes-comeback/

I believe if they do then they would operate from freight hubs with the front opening for faster freight transfer perhaps in containers and passengers at the rear.

4 Cathay Dragon A320's flying into Darwin this morning from Hong Kong. Guessing Darwin is a refuelling stop before continuing onwards.

I'm hearing 39 Cathay Pacific aircraft will be arriving and parked at Alice Springs by the end of August. Apparently 5 Airbus A320's passed through Darwin yesterday 12 August with another 6 due today. Elsewhere its been posted that up to 100 aircraft from various airlines will be there by the year end.

Cebu Pacific have also been parking some of their aircraft at Alice Springs (ATR propellers, A320’s, A321’s) even some very young aircraft that are at least 2 years old
