Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

In other words, what's the point of having a guard? Staff in a metro control room with CCTV are likely to become aware of a situation sooner than a guard.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

Well I was in a crewed Sydney train once recently and this gang of youths raged back and forth through the train fighting and intimidating passengers and no help appeared at all during about 15 km. They eventually got off and disappeared into the streets. No sign of the guard, police anybody to help...

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

Apart from CCTV, there are CSAs operating out and about throughout the system. Probably safer than a suburban train with a guard locked in one end of the train and a driver locked in the other end.

Re: Boarding protocols

If I’m packed at the beach after all door loading, I’m not going to try and stop to fit one person on when 10 are waiting at a stop even with all door boarding like you’re saying. From a drivers perspective it’s not realistic to then try and argue to get the doors closed when people won’t move out ...

Re: Boarding protocols

In theory you are correct, in reality it’s not uncommon to run non stop from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction on hot days with all the tourists, still exacerbating the situation. It's not just theory but practice. I couldn't count the number of times in my life where I've been passed by a bus that has...

Re: Boarding protocols

If by infamous you mean the most patronised bus route in the country that also has the best frequency of any bus route in the country (measured at pretty much any hour of the day, 24/7)... sure its crowded and has its other challenges, but it beats hands down any infrequent bus winding its way down...

Mostly Melbourne with almost all their buses and Brisbane with Brisbane City Council (but not the other Translink) buses. Canberra and Adelaide O-Bahn routes do it as well now but they're either a small system or limited in scope compared to Melbourne or Brisbane. A very large chunk of Australians ...

Re: Boarding protocols

Video 1 isn't helped by either people asking the driver someone or Oyster not working. Even then, half leaf front door & clear instructions of "just get on, straight to the back" would clear that crowd quicker than 3 double doors. That crowd level, everyone just starts bunch up near t...

Gotta laugh at the evolving situation in the old motherland, whence come all of Australia's "modern" bus practices. Front door-only entry, most likely no other doors on the bus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhlInNJLShw I find the comments about the ethnic origins of the passengers dista...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

The main reason Adelaide chose Combo artics is because the regular low-floor design of articulated buses like the B12BLEA weren't suited for high-speed operation on the O-Bahn and the Scania combo artics were found to be the 'most suitable' option, despite having severe issues with rattling at high...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

Just because the Bustech VST has a step at the centre door doesn't mean its 'lax' design; evidently with the Adelaide Bustech ZDi and the last few Volvo B8RLE Bustech VSTs delivered to Keolis Downer Newcastle, Bustech is more than capable of offering a vehicle with a stepless centre door. The inter...

Re: Bus Observations 2024

You'd never see an abomination like the Bustech with steps at the centre door in Perth. Yet Bustechs have been purchased in large numbers by most other agencies. Seems that the industry doesn’t share your obsession about stairs. The other offenders, low-volume operators ACT, SA and Tasmania, don't ...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

Would make for a pleasant change from the sea of drab green and silver, though! The uniformity of presentation of the Perth fleet speaks of a high standard and pride in the operation that's lacking in Sydney. Not only the livery, but the consistently high minimum design standard. You'd never...

Re: Western Sydney Airport (WSA) Rapid Bus Routes - Campbelltown, Liverpool and Penrith

The buses still aren't going to be the quickest way to get to the airport precinct by public transport, even for workers. It's not like they're going to serve any additional aerotropolis destinations not served by the metro.

Re: Western Sydney Airport (WSA) Rapid Bus Routes - Campbelltown, Liverpool and Penrith

They were promoted as "BRT" during the election, which implies fast and not many stops. From the southern side too, it's going to be much faster using the metro, simply because the road approach to the airport is from the north (Elizabeth Drive). It'll be far quicker to get off at Bradfiel...

Re: Western Sydney Airport (WSA) Rapid Bus Routes - Campbelltown, Liverpool and Penrith

Not only that, the proposed bus routes starting at the Western line don't make any sense. The journey times are over an hour and the services are half-hourly, whereas the metro will take 15 minutes (20 to Bradfield) and every several minutes. If you are coming from Penrith, it's quicker to catch the...

Re: Western Sydney Airport (WSA) Rapid Bus Routes - Campbelltown, Liverpool and Penrith

That's neither frequent nor rapid  They're appalling, but they reinforce how much we need all the metro connections. The list doesn't even mention the "missing link" from Tallawong to the Airport. That's going to be towards two hours as currently proposed via Penrith. They really nee...

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

It's been century since electrification of Sydney's suburban network began. Now we have a driverless Metros sprouting including the conversion of one of the lines electrified 100 years ago or thereabouts in the 1920s. The 2020s is certainly not as stylish. The sumptuous, accessible, quiet, fully en...

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

Not to mention the bus lanes will fulfil their purpose more when their's more traffic from no tunnel. They think private mostly single occupant vehicles are entitled to have the buses share the burden with them at times of crisis that has nothing to do with the buses. To anybody who complain...

Re: Newcastle light rail, renewal & integrated transport

Didn’t CAF maintenance do the same to Variobahns on the IWLR? (Overcost/Restrict Variobahn parts to make ordering new Urbos’s more attractive). I wouldn’t be surprised if they were also restricting parts for all Urbos systems to encourage just ordering new trams because it would mean higher margins...

Re: Newcastle light rail, renewal & integrated transport

It all boils down to TfNSW's longstanding poor capability for procuring the best vehicles/vessels/designs/suppliers for the job. This is but one example.

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

I'm not personally a big fan of EVs (I much prefer diesels - especially the ones from the late 90s!) but the statistics do show that electric vehicles are less likely to catch fire than conventionally fuelled vehicles. According to this university report, petrol and diesel vehicles are 20 times mor...
