Re: [The Age] New rail service could be even worse

I think it is not a time to blame about the performance target base. It has been already told in the contract long before and now The Age is blaming it seems not a wise idea. Furthermore, I believe MTM can do much better than Connex in terms of punctuality and customer service, particularly emergen...

Re: [The Age] New rail service could be even worse

So it looks like Kosky has given them a cushy contract - once more proving that she only wants a private operator in order to have someone to blame. If we're going to have privatisation and get one of the world's top rail operating companies in, give them enough rein to make a difference! Make the p...

The answers would vary widely depending on the type of bus, the company's maintenance policy, and the style of work the bus does.

Re: Australia, we have a problem...

Ministers aren't supposed to be experts in their area - they're supposed to be a go-between from the department (which is supposed to be full of experts) and Parliament (which is supposed to be responsible to the people). The problems come when the department keeps a lot of deadwood in place because...

Economies of scale only really work up to a point. Once you need multiple levels of management to keep the thing going, it's getting too big.

Re: Over crowding on the trams

When trams are bustituted for works, don't buses run on the tram tracks? I've seen it on Collins Street, a couple of Ventura Scania 113s passing each other at the Swanston Street super stop. It must be possible! It is time we made the move to 100% pre-pay here in Victoria. It was by far the majority...

Re: Ventura acquire U.S. Bus Lines - Effective 1st December

It's not like these are hostile takeovers, or that the big companies can "squeeze" the little ones financially and encourage them to sell. There's no real competition between companies for customers - Ventura can't say to the Route 623 passengers "Hey why are you riding Driver, come a...

Re: Early Bird Tickit To Extand To 7.30am What You Think

Introducing a totally new ticket type (eg the off-peak thing) is not easy under Metcard because every ticket vending machine has to be modified to have an extra button installed. The only way they could bring in Sunday Saver was to use the button that had previously been the Short Trip monstrosity. ...

Re: Zone Boundaries are changing.

I'm told that Myki treats a bus stop as being in a certain zone, no matter what route you're on - so they had to make the routes reflect that. Personally I think it was way overdue - so Myki has been the push that forced them to what should have been done anyway. If you make it so simple a computer ...

EComStation 2.0. Average system uptime is round about a month and a half. And that's usually to do hardware mods etc.

What's the procedure for dealing with a flipped pan? Does it involve switching off the overhead in that section, or can it be done just by grounding the tram?

Re: What and why? are the best buses, for local track routes?

Deciding which brand to buy is a science in itself. While it's better cost-wise to get all the same type (common parts, economies of scale) you can also shoot yourself in the foot that way if that particular type has a design flaw that has to be expensively modified. Also, there's innumerable combin...

Re: What have you said to telemarketers?

They always tell me they can save me lots of money off my phone bill. If I have time, I play with them a bit - most politely of course. Massage the truth slightly when talking about my current service. I have cable internet, four mobiles and four fixed lines for which I pay about $300 a month (it's ...

Re: Reporting of illegalities seen from the driver's seat

I think the idea has a lot of merit. The police have always relied heavily on ordinary citizens to report offenses and come forward as witnesses. The question of false accusation doesn't come into it - all the driver does is hit "record" on the forward facing camera and the footage is time...
