We are closely monitoring what is happening with coronavirus (COVID-19) and are in close contact with the relevant health authorities and will continue to follow their advice in terms of precautions and mitigation measures.

While all Transperth vehicles are regularly cleaned, we are increasing the cleaning regime of our buses, trains and ferries. We have begun to clean our fleet more frequently, with particular attention being paid to surfaces passengers hold or contact. Additional cleaning products have already been acquired, while more are on their way.

To help prevent the spread of coronavirus we are asking passengers to follow medical advice and:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, before and after using public transport, after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Or clean with an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Cover any coughs or sneezes with a tissue or your inner elbow, and throw your tissue in the bin afterwards.
Stay home if you are sick.
If you suspect you may have coronavirus symptoms or may have had close contact with a person who has coronavirus, you should contact the Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080.

The exact routes driven by a Transperth bus driver infected with COVID-19 have been revealed, as it emerged more than 130 passengers exchanged cash with him.

The WA Government said 137 passengers paid in cash across the driver’s eight shifts from March 9-18, before he stopped work on Thursday when he felt sick.

The Health Department advised that transmission of the disease via the handling of cash was “low risk”.

But passengers who used cash — and may have had incidental contact — can check the bus routes and the time he was driving if they held concerns.

“Even though the risk is low, the State Government understands there may be increased anxiety for these 137 passengers and is therefore releasing details about the routes and times driven by the bus driver,” a Government spokesman said.

“If these passengers do experience fever or respiratory symptoms, they should take precautions and seek medical advice.”

The driver works for Swan Transits, which operates routes on behalf of the Public Transport Authority. Between, March 9 and 18, he drove the following routes:

506: Bull Creek Station to High Rd / Nicholson Rd
507: Bull Creek Station to Cannington Station
509: Bull Creek Station to Cannington Station
517: Murdoch Tafe to Thornlie Station
178: Bull Creek Station to Elizabeth Quay bus station
999: Circle route from Fremantle Station to Fremantle Station
518: Murdoch Tafe to Cockburn Central Station
527: Cockburn Central Station to Aubin Grove Station
537: Aubin Grove Station to Honeywood Av / Darling Ch
The exact times and dates he was on these routes were as follows:

March 9: Start time 7.21am | Finish Time 6.17pm | Routes 517, 506, 178, 999, 507, 509 | Cash fares 33

The driver returned from an holiday in the United States on March 7, before the 14-day self-isolation period requirement came into effect.

He booked off work as soon as he felt sick and on Monday returned a positive test for COVID-19.

“The Department of Health has advised that passengers who travelled on the same vehicle as the driver are defined as “casual contacts”. This is particularly the case for the large majority of passengers that used a SmartRider,” the Government spokesman said.

“According to health guidelines, casual contacts don’t need to be concerned and do not need to be excluded from work or school, unless they become unwell, which is the health advice for every Western Australian. They should closely monitor their health, and if any symptoms are experienced they need to seek medical advice.”

The driver was believed to have been exposed to the virus while overseas and there was no evidence he contracted the illness while in Australia, a safety notice posted at the Swan Transit’s Canning Vale depot said.

Swan Transit was now reviewing CCTV and contact tracing was under way to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the potentially lethal disease.

“Those affected will be contacted by us or the relevant health authorities. It is incredibly important to follow any health advice you receive,” the notice stated.

Increased sanitation measures were introduced 10 days ago in consultation with the Public Transport Authority and every bus driven was required to sanitise each evening.

The buses the driver had contact with at work would also be sanitised again as a precaution, staff were told.

“It is also a reminder to follow all of the strict health guidelines with regards to any symptoms you might be experiencing,” the notice continued.

“This remains a challenging time for all businesses, including essential services like ours. We appreciate your care, and please know that we are absolutely committed to ensuring best practice for our drivers and the community.”

Mark McGowan said he had been told about the positive result on Tuesday morning. “He has been overseas, he went back to work,” the Premier said.

“The clear message out of all of this is: if you are unwell, if you’re sick — don't go to work, particularly if you've been overseas. This is very regrettable.”

I feel it's worth noting that there are some inconsistencies with these trips as listed above, the routes seem to be described incorrectly (or, they're not listed in the order he did them on those days). The first 517F from Murdoch Tafe each day doesn't start until 0824 (an hour after his posted start time), and arrives at Thornlie too late to connect with any AM 506 trip, which also would be running from Lynwood to Bull Creek in the morning, not the other way around. More likely he starts on the 0721 short 517F from Southern River and goes from there.

I'm not sure why they didn't just post the exact routes, frankly the information provided here seems rather useless to anyone that might actually be affected by this. Hell, after playing around with timetables I can't narrow down his 999 trip down any further than it departing Fremantle sometime between 10:30am and 12:30pm, so what hope do the general public have?

That's what you get when Transperth doesn't introduce rear door loading + ban on cash as has been done elsewhere. Instead they're wasting resources tracking down those who've been in contact with a driver, a task that could become monumental when more drivers are infected. This is a situation that requires quick and decisive major action, early.

As of current, I don't believe Transperth are wasting too many resources tracking down people who have been in contact with one driver. I do, however, agree that if more drivers are infected, the task would be monumental. But if the right steps are taken, no other drivers should be infected. Additionally, the driver was infected prior to the introduction of cash boxes last week. The cash boxes avert the requirement for the driver to handle cash.

As the driver reported sick on the 19th March, the Health Department have advised that the only relevant day and trips taken by the driver should be those on the 18th March:
Route 518
  • from Livingston Marketplace to Cockburn Station at 6.41am
  • from Cockburn Station to Livingston Marketplace at 5.38pm.

Route 527
  • from Aubin Grove Station to Cockburn Station at 7.57am, 1.58pm, 3.28pm and 5.09pm
  • from Cockburn Station to Brenchley Dr before Bartram Rd at 8.24am (short service)
  • from Cockburn Station to Aubin Grove Station at 2.21pm and 3.56pm.

Route 537
  • from Honeywood Av before Litoria Dr to Aubin Grove Station at 7.34am, 3.11pm and 4.51pm
  • from Aubin Grove Station to Honeywood Av before Litoria Dr at 2.49pm and 4.30pm.

Additionally, Transperth released a statement regarding door use on buses yesterday:

Passengers using bus services do still need to use the front doors to pay for their trip (as we do not have the capacity for payment via the rear doors).

How long would it take to enable tagging on via the rear doors on the SmartRider readers? I don't imagine it would take more than a week or two for a depot to reprogram/reposition the readers. Or are they already enabled, and Transperth is just referring to cash payments?

They are not set to allow rear tag-ons by default (you get a default fare), but there's a setting to allow rear tag-ons in addition to tag-offs. Additionally they can be set to allow this behaviour between stops (this would facilitate night alight).

Today's update concerns service reductions. Monday-Saturday, services will run to a Saturday timetable.

Transperth Website wrote:Following the Government’s advice to eliminate non-essential travel, patronage on the Transperth network has dropped significantly. As a result, we will be temporarily changing services to more efficiently meet this demand. In doing so, we seek to continue to support essential workers and those making essential trips who do not have other transport options.

We also aim to find a balance between reducing the exposure of our essential front-line staff to infection risk, while maintaining our passengers’ capacity to practise social-distancing on services with fewer people.

We will continue to monitor patronage and services and make adjustments as required to continue to meet those commitments.

From Monday 6 April changes will be made to the times of operation for all services across the network.

This change will be in place for an inital three week period (which will then be reviewed).

Services will operate as follows:

Train Services:
- Services from Monday to Saturday will operate on a Saturday timetable
- The Sunday and Public Holiday timetable will remain unchanged
- There will be no late night services after midnight on Friday and Saturday nights
- All efforts will be made to ensure that 6-car sets and 4-car sets are operating during these times
- The same restrictions on bikes will continue to apply during peak periods Monday to Friday.

Ferry Services:
- The Ferry will operate on a Winter timetable.

Bus Services:
- Services Monday to Saturday will operate on a Saturday timetable
- The Sunday and Public Holiday timetable will remain unchanged
- Where possible, every effort will be made to ensure that our larger, articulated vehicles will operate on popular routes.
- CAT Services (Perth, Joondalup and Fremantle)

CAT services will operate on a reduced frequency as follows:

Perth CATs:
Red - will run every 15 minutes as follows:
- 6.00am - 6.45pm Monday to Saturday
- 8.30am - 6.00pm Sunday and Public Holidays.

Yellow - will run every 15 minutes as follows:
-6.00am- 6.38pm Monday to Saturday
- 8.30am - 6.00pm Sunday and Public Holidays.

Blue - will run every 30 minutes as follows:
- 6.52am - 6.52pm Monday to Saturday
- 8.36am - 6.26pm Sunday and Public Holidays.

Green - will run every 30 minutes as follows:
- 6.00am-7.00pm Monday to Friday.

Fremantle CATs:
Blue - will run every 20 minutes as follows:
- 7.30am – 6.10pm Monday to Saturday
- 10.00am – 6.10pm Sunday and Public Holidays.

Red - will run every 30 minutes as follows:
- 7.30am – 6.15pm Monday to Saturday
- 10.00am – 6.15 Sunday and Public Holidays.

Joondalup CATs:
Yellow - All services have been cancelled

Blue - will run every 30 minutes as follows:
- 6.30am – 5.37pm Monday to Friday.

Red - will run every 30 minutes as follows:
- 7:22am – 5:52pm Monday to Friday.

Further to the changes announced upthread, an update has been given today outlining a number of bus services that will be excluded from a Saturday timetable during this time. Routes are listed below, although I encourage you to Visit the Transperth Website for more specific details about the timetables these routes will operate to.
96 – Leederville to UWA South via QEII
201 – Cannington to Curtin via Bentley Plaza and Bentley Hospital
208 – Cannington to Murdoch via Bannister Rd
293 – Perth to Kewdale
307 – Midland to Helena Valley
340 – Bassendean to Caversham
344 – Morley Bus Station to Warwick Station
355 – Ellenbrook to Whitfords via Wangara
376 – Mirrabooka to Whitfords Station
519 – Armadale to Murdoch via Harrisdale/Piara Waters
522 - Cockburn Central Station to Spearwood
600 – Mandurah to Pinjarra.

Additionally, the page notes that bus services usually running as Limited-Stops (114, 115, 361, 362, 380, 998 and 999 are listed, not sure of any others that would operate on Saturdays) will NOT be operating as Limited-Stop services during this time.
