MTT's Leyland Worldmaster [Lawton]
The Worldmaster fleet served Adelaide [and later interstate operators] well, being tram replacement vehicles together with AEC Mk IV's. My collection is not large but included are the STA Special Promotions bus [ex 939] Coastal Clipper No. 111 [ex 946] Cole Bus Service No.21 at Glenelg, No. 928 in normal livery.

Nice collection LocoLes. I'll add a few I've got. These are photos from "Sellick Of Adelaide", used bus dealers from Adelaide.
In 1982 my now late father Jack.G.Sellick purchased a variety of ex STA buses from STA Regency Park. That includes various Bedfords,Leylands,AEC's,etc. At the time he also bought Leyland Worldmasters from Greenline,a then local Adelaide charter company.

Re: MTT's Leyland Worldmaster [Lawton]
Enjoyed the photos.
The Coober Pedy photograph. That bus isn't a Worldmaster. It's an AEC regal Mk IV
The giveaway is the radiator filler just beneath the driver's front window

Re: MTT's Leyland Worldmaster [Lawton]
There were legal width versions that were built that looked nicer.

[quoteThe narrower version that built looked nicer because they were built to the legal width to start with.][/quote]
I'm not quite sure what this refers to.
None of the Adelaide MTT three-door buses (both AEC Regal 4 and Leyland Worldmaster) were built to legal width - they were all built to a width of 8 feet 6 inches.
The only one narrowed to legal width( 8'2 1/2") by the MTT was Leyland 909 (later 270), and this was done primarily as an example to potential purchasers as to what could be done with them - initially they had great difficulty in selling them, as no other state would register them as built (indeed, thought the policy varied over the years, they could generally only be registered in overwidth condition within SA under strict conditions, which varied from time to time.)
Of course, those sold interstate (other than for spare parts) were all narrowed to that state's legal width.
As far as I can tell, all the photos in this thread are of buses in original condition - ie 8'6" wide.
Cheers
Trevor

How exactly were the buses "narrowed down"? It doesn't sound like a simple or pleasant process...

Re: MTT's Leyland Worldmaster [Lawton]
Yes- but this is not an Adelaide MTT bus.
It is a bus built for Canberra, with a Freighter body clearly based on the Adelaide MTT 3-door design, but was never overwidth.
This thread has been about Adelaide MTT Worldmasters, which were built overwidth.
I can walk out the door on to Brighton Road and see any number of standard width buses, if I want to catch my death of cold!
Cheers

Re: MTT's Leyland Worldmaster [Lawton]
I guess new ones built at legal width didnt have that problem.Used buses later in life would have had to comply by removing 3/4 inch from each side of the vehicle. The process involved stripping the bus down to the frame then removing 3/4 of an inch from each side of the length of the bus.It was an expensive process. The STA's, AEC's I've seen those narrowed by that process.Lt. Commander Data wrote:How exactly were the buses "narrowed down"? It doesn't sound like a simple or pleasant process...

Thanks Denv12.
IIRC there were a few overwidth MAN SL200s as well, weren't there?

Re: MTT's Leyland Worldmaster [Lawton]
This has got me thinking now. What if a new chassis built today had a rear door at the end, with the front door just behind the front axle with the driver's area being a tad isolated. Adelaide Scania 1801 has a fully low floor design, and perhaps this could work with the doors being further back, with a door at the end, with no row of seats at the rear, just side by side like further towards the front. Perhaps this would reduce crime and assaults on PT as well by not having a dark spot in a vehicle.leyland4ever wrote:Yes- but this is not an Adelaide MTT bus.

Sitting on the back row especially at night can get you unwanted attention, no matter what gender one is.

How many Leylands were built for just the Adelaide MTT?
How many AEC's with the same body were built?
