- Autonomous vehicle trial the first of its kind Australia
- Will allow RAC, with support from the State Government, to understand and learn about autonomous vehicle technology
Western Australia is leading the way in automated vehicle technology with the staged trial of a driverless and fully electric shuttle bus to take place this year.
Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the Department of Transport was working closely with the RAC to ensure compliance with road and vehicle safety standards while they trialled an autonomous shuttle bus.
"It is not a matter of if this technology will come to WA, but when it will, and that time is fast approaching. Initially, the trials will be conducted at RAC's driving centre, but eventually the shuttle will take to Perth roads," Mr Nalder said.
The Minister said the Department of Transport was working with the RAC to identify the routes on Perth roads where the trials would take place.
"It is important West Australians are aware this technology is not confined to Hollywood blockbusters, but is actually coming to Perth.
"To ensure we are working towards providing the best integrated and intelligent transport services and solutions for the State, it is important to trial new innovative modes of transport, and this is one of those modes," Mr Nalder said.
These types of vehicles are being tested and trialled in other countries and have autonomous features such as radar cruise control and lane detection warning systems.
"Another of the safety features of the shuttle bus is its multi-sensor technology, providing 3D perception that allows it to map the environment, detect obstacles on the road and interpret traffic signs," the Minister said.
Mr Nalder said the State Government would benefit from the partnering between RAC and the Department of Transport, as experts from both worked together on this innovative and important transport project.
Fact File
- The shuttle bus has been developed by NAVYA SAS, a French company specialising in intelligent transport systems
- The shuttle bus can transport up to 15 passengers and has a maximum speed of 45kmh with an average speed of 25kmh

RAC should also done something what KAIST had done in Daejeon meaning OLEV.Anyway, will it operate on which route?
Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
It'll be doing testing with the RAC at their driver training centre and after that will be trialled on Perth's streetsZidanehartono wrote:RAC should also done something what KAIST had done in Daejeon meaning OLEV.Anyway, will it operate on which route?

Stupid idea..... so over all the automated rubbish. Taking away everyone's jobs...
Oh, and at 25 kmh average, you'll bet it'll completely clog up the roads!!!! And so to prevent that, they will make a multitude of changes which will cost way too much money. And let's be honest - odds on these are and will be expensive for a long time!

I know its very early days but I don't like the sounds of the speeds with a 25km/ph average and a maximum of 45km/ph, sounds like this vehicle is perfect for a golf course or a shopping center car park shuttle..........

Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
This vehicle won't actually ever be used by Transperth. It's just to test out the concept and show people that autonomous vehicles actually work.
It will be a good 20 years at least before Transperth start using self-driving buses. They need to be just as good as human drivers - that means being fairly aggressive whilst still being (relatively) safe. For example, currently a Google car would take forever to pull out from a bus stop, when a bus would have right of way. Isn't a simple task to achieve.

Anyway, who remembers that RAC also provided electric cars for a test?

I don't think it's gonna work, there's too many possibilities that might come with this.

It doesn't seem possible to book a ride on the Driverless bus at the moment.
Is it still running or is it just full all the time?

Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
I think there is quite a long wait list. I had the same problem. Apart from a minor glitch they had (with the GPS I think??), it's still running as far as I'm aware. There were a couple of photos posted just the other day on facebook.
Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
Thanks, I suppose the alternative is just to watch it go past. Is one end or the other of the route better for that?

Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
I'm not entirely sure. I ran out of time in the end, so I didn't get a chance to see it myself (or ride because of the booking problem), The route isn't all that long. I don't think there's any better end for watching it.
Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
I was in Perth last week.
The driverless bus trial in South Perth was unfortunately off the road for software updating and an air-conditioning upgrade but I did spend time talking to the staff at the small office they have.
The bus runs along a riverside road and is easily accessed from the ferry.
You have to register and pre-book, but apparently if you can't get a booking and someone fails to show, you can slip on board only if you have already registered.

I saw it on the back of a truck in the city on Wednesday night.

Oh, when I was there they told me they store it not far from the test route in South Perth and drive it manually to and fro each night / morning.Herbert wrote:I saw it on the back of a truck in the city on Wednesday night.

After registering on 22/10, today I received an email offering me rides in the next week.Mr OC Benz wrote:I think there is quite a long wait list. I had the same problem.
Shame my visit to Perth has been and gone.
Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
How does it work? Might be a stupid question but does it operate in traffic?

Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
Yes it does operate in traffic. In summary, the self driving bus is driven by a computer inside it like a robot, it does have a GPS system, which allows it to follow along its route, and it has sensors to avoid obstacles, pedestrians and other vehicles.simonl wrote:How does it work? I've been on their email list since I was in Perth last November, but had not heard any news until today receiving an email inviting me to book a ride, so they must have seats available if anybody is interested.
Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
4000 people still on the waiting list, might be waiting a while.

I received another email about my registration so they must be making their way through the list.

Re: Trial of autonomous vehicle (fully electric shuttle bus)
I read somewhere, but can't seem to find the source now, that the RAC Intellibus trial in South Perth has been extended until the end of the year? Time slots seem to continually be released a week in advance. I'm still on the waiting list waiting for the moons to align so that I can experience it!
Another autonomous bus, of the same brand NAVYA, has just been introduced at Curtin University and will be operating from end of this month on a fixed route Mon-Fri 10am to 2pm through the Bentley campus which also includes intermediate bus stops. Not sure whether this is open to the public though. Bit vague on detail in that respect. Curtin is the first university in Australia to trial the driverless bus.
