Re: Holden to be axed
It was already on the cards with Opel being swallowed up by PSA (aka Peugeot). Aside from the VE/VF Commodores (Zeta platform) there hasn't been a real Holden since the WB. Everything else was an Australianised Opel, Daewoo, Isuzu or Toyota (and the odd Suzuki and Nissan in the 80s, not sure about the relationship with Bedford CF vans with the red six).

First, they stopped building cars in Australia in 2017 and thaey had the last factory to do so now the company is facing the axe.
I wonder how this will affect other vehicles besides cars....

Probably not a problem in most RHD markets where LHD cars are accepted without restrictions.scott wrote:Holden will be gone from Australia at the end of 2020 as General Motors stop RHD production worldwide.

In 1999 the AMWU was warned by the Howard Government that if they did not abandon the Campaign 2000 wage rise that car manufacturing in Australia would cease within 15 years.
I was there at the time.

Look what happened.
Maybe unions should listen to governments a bit more eh?

I am sure as always, the dealers will flog the overpriced window tints, extended warranties, paint protection, interior trim protection and other useless add ons, to get a decent cut.

Re: Holden to be axed
I suspect it would only have delayed the inevitable, particularly when Commodores were really the only thing they were assembling here. Since the GFC, in particular, the writing has been on the wall for the "Big 6," perhaps they could've made a more credible effort with making LPG efficient or looked into better powerplants.1whoknows wrote:In 1999 the AMWU was warned by the Howard Government that if they did not abandon the Campaign 2000 wage rise that car manufacturing in Australia would cease within 15 years.

Anyway, it's too late for any of that now. I think it's pretty disgusting that so much taxpayer's money was poured into these propping up Ford, GM-Holden (etc) who had no interest in using that to develop an export product. All they did was hold successive governments hostage with the threat of job losses.

Even at these prices. I wouldn't be motivated to buy any of these cars.scott wrote:Information on the fire sale to clear the stock

Re: Holden to be axed
I would rather have something with solid long term support and good resale value such as a Toyota, rather than a Holden that may become harder to support over time, have not a great deal of resale value and be hard to sell.
