TV - Michael Portillo in Oz.
Former British Minister for Transport and TV "rail tourist", Michael Portillo, has finally made his way to Australia. I believe his program will air on SBS TV from 4 February 2020. Let's hope someone has quietly turned down his ego, but I doubt it.

Have quite liked some of his Euro series
From the BBC website
Great Australian Railway Journeys, Series 1
Michael Portillo travels the length and breadth of Australia by train.
Newcastle to Brisbane
Kuranda to Townsville
Canberra to Melbourne
Adelaide to Perth: The Indian Pacific
Sydney to Broken Hill
Port Augusta to Darwin: The Ghan
UK audiences will be very familiar with the XPT in Ep3 given the similarities to the mostly retired HST in the UK.
Was reportedly filmed in 2018.

He was a politician. You don't get into politics by being a shrinking violet!lunchbox wrote:Former British Minister for Transport and TV "rail tourist", Michael Portillo, has finally made his way to Australia. Failed politicians and out-of-work actors seemed to end up with travel shows.
Can we trust either group?

For the record, he got one thing wrong. Walking past the station name board at Bondi Junction, he quipped that the famous beach was associated with a RAILWAY junction!

Well it's not tramway junction anymore is it? Maybe interchange or intermodal junction would be better.lunchbox wrote:For the record, he got one thing wrong. Walking past the station name board at Bondi Junction, he quipped that the famous beach was associated with a RAILWAY junction!

We need to create a historical myth about Shellharbour Junction to justify its name.

That other Pommy TV "personality", Chris Tarrant, is also inclined to a bit of bulldust. His "Ghan" piece purported to show early morning aerial shots of the Ghan heading north to Darwin, but the long shadows of the rolling stock, from a low sun, were on the RIGHT side of the train.

Another egotist, in the name of Tony Robinson, otherwise going by the name of "Baldrick", has joined the ranks of rail tourist dragging along a TV crew. Emulating Portillo, his egotism even extends to a "Sir" in the credits!
But I confess to enjoying his 2020 visit to El Paso, Texas, with its beautifully restored (imitation?) PCC cars - with pantos!
